What works against Malenia
Bleed, frostbite, and stance pressure are useful ways to apply pressure, but none is mandatory. The available guides do not establish numerical status thresholds or a definitive ranking of builds, so choose tactics that fit your weapon and play style rather than rebuilding around a supposed single best counter. The Elden Ring Wiki overview lists these pressure options; PC Gamer’s guide also describes stagger-oriented play and heavy or jumping attacks.
Do not trade hits or rely on a shield
Malenia heals when her attacks connect, including when you block them. A shield can reduce or prevent damage to you, but it does not stop her from regaining health. Prioritize dodging and choosing safe openings over trading blows. If you use a shield, treat it as a defensive fallback rather than a way to deny her healing. Choose pressure that creates safe openings
Staggering can interrupt her rhythm and create chances to attack. Heavy or jumping attacks are among the approaches described by guides, but they require you to judge distance and recovery rather than swing continuously. Co-op aggression is another option; it is not necessary for a successful attempt. PC Gamer covers these tactical options.
How to handle Waterfowl Dance
Waterfowl Dance begins with a visible airborne wind-up and continues through several rapid flurries. The aim is to limit how many attacks connect, since each connection can restore Malenia’s health.

- React when she rises. Create distance as soon as the wind-up begins, rather than waiting for the first flurry to reach you.
- Keep moving away from the opening flurry. Distance can help you avoid its initial rush; do not stop to attack while she is committing to the move.
- Evade the follow-up flurries. As they close in, dodge through or away from their path, then watch for the next burst before counterattacking.
- Consider a Freezing Pot interrupt. Game8 and Eldenpedia report that throwing a Freezing Pot during the airborne wind-up can interrupt Waterfowl Dance. How to survive phase two
Move away from Scarlet Aeonia
Phase two opens with Malenia diving into a Scarlet Aeonia bloom. Retreat from the landing area and stay clear of the bloom rather than trying to attack through it. Once the hazard clears, approach carefully and look for her recovery before committing. Eldenpedia and PC Gamer describe the opening attack.
Watch for Scarlet Rot hazards
Some phase-two attacks add Scarlet Rot hazards. Keep moving out of their danger areas, then use the recovery window after an attack to apply damage. Avoid chasing damage while she is still attacking; a hit can both hurt you and restore her health.

No single build or combat style is established as the required solution. Use these trade-offs to choose a plan:
- Close-range dodging: Suits players comfortable reading attack timing and punishing recovery, but leaves less room to react if Waterfowl Dance catches them nearby.
- Creating distance: Gives more room to respond to the opening flurry of Waterfowl Dance, but still requires evading its follow-ups and re-engaging safely.
- Status or stance pressure: Bleed, frostbite, and stagger-focused attacks can add pressure; use them as tools, not as a guaranteed shortcut.
- Co-op: Coordinated aggression can create attack opportunities, though each player still needs to avoid feeding her healing with connected hits.
- Consumable setup: A Freezing Pot may interrupt Waterfowl Dance during its wind-up, but its effectiveness can decline after repeated use.
