The figure, announced on 5 October 2026, is an estimate rather than the final bill. The company says it will meet the cost from its reserves, without government funding.
What is included in the £5m estimate?
The Steam Packet’s estimate covers the combined cost of Manxman’s dry docking and repairs, including the extended time in dry dock. It is not a repair-only figure, and the operator has not published a final outturn cost.
The company said it notified Treasury in July because the anticipated costs would exceed £2.5m, the threshold at which shareholder consent is required. It said the notification was not a request for funding and was not itself a precise estimate.
Why is Manxman out of service?
Wear was found on liners fitted to the vessel’s two propulsion shafts and on associated bearings during routine dry docking in July. The Steam Packet said the components were removed and sent to MarineShaft A/S, a specialist engineering firm in Denmark. Its 5 October update said the repair work was complete.

The company commissioned an independent report into what caused the wear. It has not announced a confirmed cause or established who, if anyone, is liable.
When is Manxman expected to return?
After the 5 October update, the components were due to return to Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead for reassembly and recommissioning. Sea trials were expected before the ferry could resume service. The operator was targeting a return from the end of November 2026; that was a target, not confirmation of a return date.

Will the repair be paid for by the government?
No. The Steam Packet said it would meet the costs from its own reserves, without government funding. The Treasury notification concerned the shareholder-consent threshold, not a request for public money.
The company also said it would seek recovery through insurance and warranty where appropriate. It had not confirmed whether any recovery would be made or how much it might amount to.

How have sailings been covered during the outage?
During the disruption, the BBC reported that the back-up passenger ferry Ben-my-Chree was making daily Douglas–Heysham trips and that freight vessel MV Arrow had returned to assist with cargo. The report also noted November sailing changes affecting Larne and Heysham. Those arrangements can change, so passengers should check the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s current sailing information before travelling.

Steam Packet managing director Brian Thomson said in the company’s 5 October 2026 update: “We’re extremely conscious at all times of our position as both a publicly-owned entity and a vital link in the Isle of Man’s infrastructure.” He said prudent financial planning and contingency funds form part of the company’s approach to unexpected events.
