Yes—Ninja Theory staff have begun reporting that their jobs are at risk or have ended. But Xbox has not confirmed that the studio has closed: its latest official statement, on September 22, 2026, said it would begin consultation on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options.
What has happened to Ninja Theory staff?
On October 5, 2026, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reported that nine Ninja Theory employees had publicly posted on LinkedIn that their roles were either at risk of redundancy or had ended. Those posts indicate that job losses are affecting individual staff, but they do not establish that all nine had already been dismissed—or provide a verified total for the studio.
The distinction matters: some employees described a risk of redundancy, while others said their jobs had ended. VGC’s named employees are the people featured in its report, not a count of everyone affected.
Why is Xbox consulting on a possible closure?
Xbox said on September 22 that two separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. In an employee message published by Xbox Wire, Xbox executive Matt Booty wrote: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through,” and, “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.”

The wording describes a proposed closure and a consultation process—not a completed shutdown. Xbox said it would continue exploring other paths, and the cited statement does not say when consultation will finish or whether a final closure decision has been made. Xbox Wire’s September 22 update also said 268 roles were eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That figure is not a Ninja Theory redundancy count.
What happened to the earlier ownership plan?
In a July 6, 2026 message, Xbox said Ninja Theory had entered terms to join new ownership, with funding intended to complete and grow Senua. Xbox later said two separate agreements had fallen through. The July plan therefore did not become a completed transfer of ownership, according to the subsequent update.

Xbox’s July message also described approximately 3,200 workforce reductions planned throughout FY27, including approximately 1,600 role eliminations at that time. These were Xbox-wide restructuring figures, not the number of Ninja Theory employees affected. Xbox’s July 6 statement provides that broader context.
Is Senua canceled?
That has not been confirmed. VGC reported that Senua had been announced in June 2026 with a planned 2027 release, but said on October 5 that the game’s fate had not been officially confirmed and remained uncertain. Ninja Theory gameplay programmer Katrin Mair told VGC in a LinkedIn post: “It’s incredibly sad knowing that we won’t get to finish what we were working on. So much care, talent and effort went into it, and I really wish we’d had the chance to see what it could have become.” Her post conveys her experience, but does not establish that Senua was canceled.
