Start by collecting safe coin lines, timing your Rocket Start, and learning to drift through corners. Once those basics feel comfortable, try ramp tricks and Mario Kart World’s Charge Jumps, rails, and wall rides. The game is for Nintendo Switch 2; button controls work, and the Joy-Con 2 Wheel is optional.
Build speed with the basics
Collect coins when the route is safe
Coins do more than add to your tally: Nintendo says they raise your kart’s maximum speed for the current course. You can carry up to 20, and coins also unlock additional vehicles. Take a coin line when it fits your route, but do not risk a fall or collision just to grab one. Nintendo’s beginner tips explain the speed effect and limit.
Time your Rocket Start
During the countdown, press and hold A when the display reaches 2 for a quick boost. Holding from the beginning is not the instruction Nintendo gives; practice the timing over a few starts until it feels consistent. Nintendo’s tips and game overview describe the start boost.
Drift to charge a Mini-Turbo
Tilt the Left Stick toward a corner while holding R to drift. Keep holding R to charge a stronger Mini-Turbo, then release as you straighten out to use the boost. As practical guidance, begin the drift just before or as the turn starts and focus on keeping a controlled line rather than holding it so long that you run wide. Drifting lets you slide around corners without losing speed while charging a boost, according to Nintendo’s game page.

Draft on open straights
Follow behind another racer on a clear straight for a few seconds and a boost can trigger. Treat it as an opportunity, not a command to follow into an obstacle or abandon a safer line. It is drafting—not drifting—and the course layout determines whether the setup is worth taking. Nintendo’s beginner tips describe the draft boost.
Trick from ramps
Press R just as your kart leaves a ramp to perform a trick and get a boost on landing. This ramp timing is separate from a Charge Jump, which you initiate on the ground. Nintendo’s beginner tips cover the ramp input, while its game page describes the landing dash as a Jump Boost.
Choose controls and assists that suit you
Button controls and motion controls are supported. The Joy-Con 2 Wheel is an optional accessory for motion play, not a requirement or a proven performance advantage. You can adjust settings for each player on the same system. Nintendo’s game page describes the accessory and control options.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

Open the settings
- From the kart-selection screen, press X; or pause in Single Player, Multiplayer, or Free Roam and press X.
- Choose the settings you want to change. Options include Smart Steering, Auto-Accelerate, Auto-Use Items, Tilt Controls, camera orientation, minimap, Dash Food transformations, and music volume.
- If you prefer motion steering, enable Tilt Controls with a motion-capable controller. Nintendo specifically recommends a Joy-Con 2 in the Wheel accessory for this option.
For the menu path and setting names, see Nintendo Support’s control-settings instructions.
Decide whether to use Smart Steering
Smart Steering can help keep your kart from falling off. Nintendo says it limits Mini-Turbo progression to two power levels; turning it off unlocks a third. It is reasonable to use the assist while learning a course, then try it off when you want to practice charging the extra level. Neither choice is a measure of skill.
Know what the other assists do
- Auto-Accelerate: removes the need to hold an acceleration button.
- Auto-Use Items: activates items automatically; the timing depends on the item being held.
- Tilt Controls: steers through motion input and requires a motion-capable controller.
The settings are available from the same menu path above; their descriptions are listed by Nintendo Support.

Try the movement systems after learning to race
Charge Jump
While driving straight, hold A and then R until sparks appear beneath a tire. Tilt the Left Stick in the direction you want to jump, then release R. A Charge Jump is a deliberate movement input, unlike the quick trick performed when leaving a ramp. Nintendo’s beginner guide gives the input sequence.
Rail Ride
Some narrow surfaces, including handrails and power lines, can be ridden. A Charge Jump can help you reach one. Look for a rail that follows a useful route rather than trying to ride every surface you see; the game’s connected courses make the surrounding path relevant. Nintendo describes rail riding on its game page.

Face a wall and jump into it with a Jump Boost or Charge Jump to ride it briefly. Nintendo also suggests linking a Charge Jump, wall, rail, and another wall when the route allows. Treat that sequence as an experiment for routes that support it, not a prerequisite for ordinary racing. See Nintendo’s tips and game overview.

Use Free Roam to explore and practice
Free Roam lets you explore the connected world without the structure of a race. Before heading out, check the map: it can show character and outfit progress and ? Panel counts, and you can select a character or location to warp there. Press Y to open the map in Free Roam. This makes it useful for learning routes or retrying a movement idea away from race pressure. Nintendo’s beginner guide explains the map and warp options.
You can try different character and vehicle combinations from the menu and check vehicle stats with Y during selection. The available information does not establish one universally best beginner combination, so use the stats to compare options that suit how you like to drive rather than chasing a guaranteed build. Nintendo’s game page covers the combinations.
Rewind to retry a route
In most single-player modes, press Down to return your kart to an earlier position. Rewind restores kart position, not time. It can help you retry a Free Roam route or P Switch challenge, but in a race other racers keep moving and can pass while you recover. Nintendo’s tips and game overview explain the feature.

Pick a race mode for the kind of practice you want
| Mode | Structure | What it asks of you |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Prix | Points competition across four connected courses. | Stay consistent over a longer event, including the areas between courses. |
| Knockout Tour | Back-to-back rally with five checkpoints; racers who do not place high enough at a checkpoint are eliminated. | Manage checkpoint pressure and avoid falling behind at elimination points. |
The comparison follows Nintendo’s mode descriptions; it does not establish which mode is easier. Grand Prix offers a connected multi-course event, while Knockout Tour makes checkpoint survival explicit.
Check the installed version for patch-sensitive advice
Nintendo Support lists version 1.8.0 as released September 9, 2026. Its notes include new Knockout Tour rally types, additional selectable SNES courses in VS Race, Time Trials, Online Play, and Wireless Play, Time Trials display changes, adjustments to item-box acquisition probabilities, and other gameplay changes. A preceding version 1.7.0 update raised acceleration for some low-acceleration character and vehicle combinations and changed other behavior. For route or item advice that depends on a particular version, check the installed game against Nintendo Support’s update history; the notes do not provide a basis for quoting specific item probabilities.
