Mario Kart World Review: Graphics, Gameplay and Switch 2 Verdict

Mario Kart World is a colorful, ambitious Switch 2 racer whose connected routes and Knockout Tour stand out. Free Roam is appealing but less consistently rewarding.

Mario Kart World is worth buying for Switch 2 owners who want an approachable racer built around lively Grand Prix events and multiplayer—especially its new Knockout Tour. Its connected routes make races feel bigger and more continuous, while the colorful presentation gives the game real launch-showcase appeal. The reservation is Free Roam: the world is enjoyable to explore, but reviewers differ on whether its missions and rewards give it enough purpose to sustain long sessions. Nintendo lists the game at $79.99 in the U.S.; that is its listed regular price, not a guarantee of today’s retail price.

What kind of game is Mario Kart World?

Released June 5, 2025, Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Its central change is a connected world: roads link courses, and in some formats the travel between locations becomes part of the race rather than a transition between isolated tracks. Nintendo describes routes through settings including cities, plains, desert and ocean, with dynamic weather and a day-and-night cycle. Nintendo’s launch announcement says races can feature up to 24 drivers at once, the largest field in series history.

The familiar cup-based Grand Prix returns, alongside the elimination-focused Knockout Tour, Free Roam, Time Trials, VS Race and Battle. That range makes the game more than an open-world experiment: traditional racing remains a major part of the package.

How does it look and sound?

Mario Kart World makes a strong impression through its bright visual identity and the distinct character of its courses. Nintendo Life’s review praises the presentation, soundtrack and seamless-feeling course transitions, describing the game as “bigger and more beautiful” while retaining the series’ focus on fun. That is a critical assessment, not a technical benchmark. Read Nintendo Life’s review.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

The available evidence does not establish a specific resolution, frame rate, HDR behavior or performance result for each mode. Nintendo’s general description of Switch 2 capabilities should not be mistaken for a measured account of this game’s performance.

How does the racing play?

The racing aims to welcome newcomers without removing room for skill. Reviewers point to shortcuts, varied mechanics and combinations of driving skills as ways to find faster lines and make moment-to-moment decisions matter. It preserves the series’ accessible feel while adding options for players who want to master its routes. Nintendo Life and GameSpot both identify mechanical variety and skill expression as strengths.

  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle

Is Knockout Tour good?

Knockout Tour is the clearest reason to care about Mario Kart World’s new structure. It strings routes together into a longer event and eliminates racers at checkpoints, creating sustained pressure: the task is not just to win a single track but to keep advancing through the tour. GameSpot reviewer Steve Watts calls it the standout new mode. He found the large field especially chaotic and effective online; in solo play, trailing racers had less impact on the experience. Watts’s review concludes: “Mario Kart World expands on almost everything that made Mario Kart 8 such an enduring success, laying the foundation for years of raucous racing to come.” That is his review opinion, not a guarantee about future support.

What is Free Roam like?

Free Roam gives players room to drive around the connected world alone or with friends, and Nintendo says the mode includes hundreds of single-player missions. It can be a pleasant change of pace from racing, particularly when the scenery itself is part of the appeal. Nintendo Life says the sights and sounds make exploring enjoyable and notes that P-Switch missions can become compelling.

Nintendo Mario Kart World Racing Game for Nintendo Switch 2 (Hong Kong Version) (Mario Kart World)
  • [SEAMLESS OPEN WORLD] Experience an interconnected racing environment with zero loading screens between courses. Navigate a massive world featuring 24-hour dynamic day/night cycles and shifting weather patterns that directly impact vehicle traction and handling across mountains and cities.
  • [ADVANCED RACING MECHANICS] Master all-new maneuvers including high-speed rail riding, wall jumping, and tactical water skimming. These next-gen traversal abilities allow players to discover hidden shortcuts and alternate routes within a 100% seamless world-map architecture.
  • [24-PLAYER ELIMINATION MODE] Compete in the high-stakes Knockout Tour, an adrenaline-packed 24-driver elimination mode where racers are removed checkpoint by checkpoint. Supports up to 24-player online multiplayer with integrated GameChat for real-time social coordination.
  • [NEXT-GEN TECHNICAL SPECS] Optimized exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system to deliver stunning 4K Ultra HD resolution in docked mode and a locked 60FPS frame rate. Features enhanced texture mapping and global illumination for the most immersive visual experience in series history.
  • [OPEN-WORLD EXPLORATION] Step away from the Grand Prix in the all-new Free Roam mode to wander the world at your own pace. Discover hidden surprises, unlockable vehicle parts, and brand-new drivers across diverse biomes including dense forests and sprawling urban landscapes.

Its structure and rewards are less convincing to some reviewers. Nintendo Life wanted more to do in the map and found split-screen Free Roam less intuitive than it should be. GameSpot criticized the open world as feeling mostly empty and stickers as weak rewards for challenges. These are review judgments, not universal predictions of how every player will respond. The practical distinction is that Free Roam offers things to discover, but it is a less secure reason to buy than the racing modes if you expect a deep, sustained open-world campaign.

How is online multiplayer?

The larger field is a natural fit for online racing, and GameSpot found a full Knockout Tour lobby particularly effective. Its review also reported inconsistent waits for full lobbies during the review period, with regular-race matchmaking sometimes taking longer than Knockout Tour. That is a time-bound observation, not a current measurement of Nintendo’s network or matchmaking.

What does it cost, and what do you need to play?

Nintendo lists a U.S. regular price of $79.99 for Mario Kart World. That is a dated, region-specific listed price; retailers and current pricing can differ. Nintendo’s launch announcement listed the Switch 2 at $449.99 in the U.S. and a Switch 2 plus Mario Kart World bundle at $499.99. Those were U.S. launch suggested retail prices, not current hardware-price guarantees. Check regional pricing and retailer listings before buying. Nintendo’s announcement has the launch details.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

The game requires a Switch 2; it is not a Switch 1 release. The Joy-Con 2 Wheel is an optional, separately sold accessory, not a requirement. For local multiplayer, Nintendo Support documents how to set up a game with Joy-Con 2 or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: How to Start a Multiplayer Game (Mario Kart World).

Verdict: Is Mario Kart World worth it?

For Switch 2 owners who expect to spend their time racing—alone, with friends or online—Mario Kart World is a compelling, polished racer. The connected routes give familiar cup racing a fresh sense of scale, and Knockout Tour turns that structure into its most distinctive mode. Reviewers also praise the expressive presentation and mechanics that leave room for skill.

Buy with more caution if your main reason is an expansive open-world campaign. Free Roam has appealing scenery and missions, but its activity density and challenge rewards are the most persistent points of disagreement. The price decision also depends on where you live and what the game currently costs: Nintendo’s listed U.S. regular price is $79.99, while actual retail prices may vary.
