That trio captures what makes this roster stand out: it reaches beyond Mario’s headline heroes to characters and creatures from across the series’ world.
How many characters are there in Mario Kart World?
Nintendo Life’s July 1, 2026 roster guide counts 50 unique playable racers. It treats alternate costumes separately, so costume changes do not increase the total. The guide says 32 characters are available initially and the remaining 18 are unlocked through cup completion or transformation mechanics. See Nintendo Life’s character unlock guide for its roster and unlock details.
The distinction matters: picking a different costume is not the same as adding another character to the roster. And the 50-character count is Nintendo Life’s guide figure, not a number stated in Nintendo’s announcement.
Which characters are in Mario Kart World?
The roster mixes familiar Mario faces with enemies, creatures and less expected inhabitants. Nintendo’s announcement calls out Goomba, Spike and Cow; Nintendo Life’s guide confirms a broader range of unusual picks, including Coin Coffer, Conkdor, Chargin’ Chuck, Cheep Cheep, Fish Bone, Dolphin, Cataquack, Peepa, Pianta and Swoop.

Familiar faces and recognizable enemies
Alongside the more surprising selections are established characters and enemies that players will recognize from the Mario games. Chargin’ Chuck, Cheep Cheep, Spike and Swoop, for example, have long been part of the series’ wider cast, even if they are not usually the first names that come to mind as racers.
Creatures and background-world picks
Coin Coffer, Conkdor, Cataquack, Peepa, Pianta, Fish Bone, Dolphin and Cow broaden the impression further. They come from the larger Mario setting rather than simply extending the familiar lineup of central heroes. Their presence makes the roster feel like a tour through the world’s inhabitants, not only a roll call of the usual leading characters.

- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world

Why does the roster feel so eclectic?
The surprise is less that these characters are new to Mario and more that Mario Kart World makes them playable racers. Nintendo’s own offbeat trio establishes that breadth directly, while the longer list includes enemies and creatures that often occupy supporting or environmental roles. The effect is a roster that treats the series’ wider world as racing material.
That variety also changes how a “deep cut” feels: a choice can be unusual as a racer without being obscure in Mario’s universe. A familiar enemy or creature may be instantly recognizable, yet still feel unexpected behind the wheel.

How do you unlock the less familiar racers?
Nintendo Life reports that 18 of the 50 unique characters are not available initially. Its guide identifies cup completion and transformation mechanics among the ways to unlock them. That means roster size and immediate selection are different questions: a character can be part of the game’s confirmed lineup without appearing in the starting selection.
Nintendo announced Mario Kart World for Nintendo Switch 2, with a June 5, 2025 launch, and later confirmed it is available exclusively on that system. Its announcement also describes races with up to 24 drivers, an interconnected world, Free Roam and Knockout Tour. Those wider features give the game a large setting; the roster’s deep cuts make that setting feel populated by more than the headline cast. Nintendo’s April 17, 2025 announcement introduced the game and its offbeat racers, and its June 5, 2025 availability post confirmed the platform exclusivity.
