Mario Party Superstars is a strong choice for groups who want classic Mario Party board play, familiar minigames, and straightforward button controls. Its five boards and retrospective approach are also its biggest limitations: it feels more like a polished collection of classics than a major step forward for the series. Reviews were favorable overall, but critics differed on how much that nostalgia outweighed the limited board selection and lack of substantial new mechanics.

What do reviews say about Mario Party Superstars?

The critical reception is favorable, though not unanimous. Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page displayed an 80 Metascore, labeled “Generally Favorable,” from 97 critic reviews when checked on October 8, 2026. That is a changing aggregate snapshot, not a score issued by Nintendo. See Metacritic’s critic reviews.

The difference between two individual reviews illustrates the main divide. Nintendo Life’s Alex Olney scored the game 8.0 on October 28, 2021, praising its classic board-game structure, minigame selection, faster movement and text options, saved games, and online play. His reservation was the small board roster and limited mechanical novelty. GameSpot’s Randolph Ramsay scored it 6/10 the same day. He appreciated the nostalgia and board selection but found the return to older conventions restrictive compared with recent entries, pointing to the absence of motion-control minigames, a small playable-character roster, and missing innovations from Super Mario Party. Is Mario Party Superstars worth it?

It is most appealing if your group wants the familiar loop of moving around a board, collecting stars, and competing in minigames—and likes revisiting classic Nintendo 64-era maps and minigames. The button-based controls and range of multiplayer options also make it straightforward to bring into a group session.

Nintendo Mario Party Superstars: Standard - Switch [Digital Code]
  • Bring the party on 5 classic boards from the Nintendo 64 Mario Party games
  • Show your friends and family who’s boss in 100 minigames from throughout the Mario Party series
  • All game modes can be played online*
  • Matches with friends in board game mode are saved after each turn both locally** and online*—pick up where you left off
  • Play using a single Joy-Con controller, two Joy-Con with the Joy-Con grip accessory, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, or Nintendo Switch Lite system

It is a less compelling fit if you want a large choice of boards or a party game built around new mechanics. The collection has five boards, and reviewers who wanted more of the innovations found in recent series entries were less enthusiastic. In short, its value depends on whether your group prizes a well-known formula and nostalgia more than novelty or breadth.

How many boards and minigames are in Mario Party Superstars?

Nintendo lists five classic Nintendo 64 boards and 100 minigames drawn from Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and other games. The minigame collection is a central part of the game’s appeal, but the board count is the clearest limit for groups hoping for a wide range of board-game settings. Nintendo’s product listing also describes Mt. Minigames, which offers seven modes.

Nintendo Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo Switch) (European Version)
  • Mario Party is back with five classic boards from the Nintendo 64 Mario Party games. Frosting meets flowers as you race to get the most stars (and sabotage your opponents) on the Peach’s Birthday Cake board from the original Mario Party game. Or watch the countdown that unleashes Bowser Coin Beam and hold onto those coins on the Space Land board. The tides can turn quickly in Mario Party, so stay vigilant, partygoers. This and all other modes can be played online, too!
  • Try your hand at a Superstar collection of minigames from throughout the Mario Party series. Whether you are saving up coins for stars in board game mode or practising in free play, there is nothing quite like being the last one standing in Mushroom Mix-Up or Shy Guy Says. All minigames are played with button controls, so you can stick to the Joy-Con controller or bust out the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or a Nintendo Switch Lite.
  • Bring the party anytime, anywhere with same-system, local wireless, or online play. Matches with friends in board game mode save each turn, so feel free to take a break and pick up where you left off. Use stickers to praise or pester fellow players as you race across the board collecting stars. All modes support online multiplayer, so you can hop in with friends for a few minigames or a marathon 30-turn match. Victory is just as sweet (and stealing stars is just as satisfying) from anywhere across the globe.

Can you play Mario Party Superstars online?

Yes. Nintendo lists online play for one to four players, as well as same-system play for one to four and local wireless play for two to four. Nintendo Switch Online membership is listed as a requirement for online play. Nintendo also says players can suspend an active board game and resume it later, making it easier to split a longer session.

Is Mario Party Superstars good for families?

Its familiar board-game structure and button controls make it approachable for groups that include players with different experience levels. Nintendo says every minigame uses button controls; players can use Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, or a Switch Lite system. That avoids requiring motion controls for minigames, though the game is still competitive and the appeal will depend on whether everyone enjoys its turn-based board play and minigame contests.

Does Mario Party Superstars work on Switch Lite?

The listing also names Joy-Con and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. A Pro Controller is optional, not a prerequisite for ordinary play.

What should you compare before choosing a Mario Party game?

When deciding between Mario Party Superstars and another party game or series entry, consider the kind of session your group wants rather than treating a higher or lower review score as a universal verdict.
