Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a lively, single-player Switch RPG whose best moments come from expressive comedy and turn-based battles built around well-timed button presses. Its island-hopping structure and combat options give the adventure room to grow, but frequent encounters, a long campaign and less satisfying exploration may test players’ patience. It is worth considering if you enjoy action-timed RPG combat and don’t mind a substantial journey with uneven momentum.

What is Mario & Luigi: Brothership?

Released for Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024, Brothership sends Mario and Luigi across Concordia, a fractured world of scattered islands. Their base is Shipshape Island, which is both a ship and an island; from there, they explore the surrounding land and work to reconnect the world. Nintendo’s official US listing identifies it as a one-player game for one system and gives it an ESRB rating of Mild Fantasy Violence.

The adventure mixes island exploration and puzzle-like obstacles with turn-based battles. Nintendo’s UK game page lists both a download version and a Nintendo Switch Game Card version, a PEGI 7 rating, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller compatibility and a 10.0 GB download size. Those edition and rating details are specific to the UK listing.

How does Brothership’s combat work?

Combat is turn-based, but success is not just a matter of choosing a command and waiting. Timed button presses can strengthen attacks, while correctly timed inputs let Mario and Luigi dodge incoming moves. That hands-on rhythm is the game’s central combat hook: players have something to do during both offense and defense.

Options that add variety

  • Bros. Attacks give the brothers coordinated offensive moves.
  • Battle Plugs add further options to battles.
  • Luigi Logic brings Luigi’s ideas into problem-solving and combat-related situations.

Nintendo’s game overview describes these systems alongside island exploration and Bros. Moves. Together, they help distinguish the adventure from a conventional turn-based RPG: coordination and timing matter as much as selecting an action.

What works best?

Nintendo Life reviewer PJ O’Reilly’s November 4, 2024 review is strongly positive about the game’s combat, presentation and growing enemy variety. He praises the expressive animation and comedy, and argues that the combat becomes more interesting as the campaign develops. In his words, the system is “a bright and busy, comedy-infused combat system that’s a genuine blast to dig into,” with enemy varieties that change later in the game. That is O’Reilly’s favorable assessment, not a consensus score or a guarantee that every player will enjoy the pacing.

The island framework also gives the journey a clear sense of movement: players travel outward from Shipshape Island to discover different places and new mechanics. O’Reilly finds the range of later areas and encounters rewarding as the adventure opens up. The result is a game with a recognizable rhythm of exploration, obstacles and battles, rather than an RPG built around a single continuous dungeon.

Where does the adventure falter?

Frequent encounters can slow exploration

O’Reilly’s positive review still identifies a drawback: random encounters occur at a high frequency. Because battles are a substantial part of the game’s appeal, repeated interruptions may feel less bothersome to players who enjoy its timed combat. Those who prefer to move through an area without frequent fights may find the same cadence tiring.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

A long campaign that may lose momentum

GameSpot reviewer Steve Watts, writing on November 6, 2024, takes a more critical view of the overall experience. He describes the RPG as lengthy but top-heavy, arguing that it does not sustain its weight across the whole campaign. That assessment contrasts with O’Reilly’s enthusiasm for the combat’s later development: the systems may deepen, yet that does not necessarily resolve concerns about the adventure’s overall pacing.

Exploration and control are divisive

Watts also finds exploration unremarkable and criticizes the feel of its controls. He argues that Mario is too central to a series built around the two brothers, raising a question of character agency as well as control: whether Luigi feels like an equal partner in play. O’Reilly, by contrast, emphasizes expressive animation and varied islands as strengths. These are distinct judgments from two named reviewers, not evidence of a uniform critical verdict.

Is Mario & Luigi: Brothership worth playing?

It is a stronger fit for players who enjoy timed-action RPG battles, characterful animation and an episodic island journey. Its combat has multiple systems to engage with, and O’Reilly’s review makes a persuasive case for the fun of its evolving battles and enemies. Players who are especially sensitive to random encounters, long campaigns or exploration that feels less agile should give more weight to Watts’s reservations before deciding.

The Nintendo Switch release is single-player. Nintendo’s US listing says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch when used on Nintendo Switch 2; this is a compatibility note, not a claim that the game has a separate Switch 2 edition.
