Mario & Luigi: Brothership launched for Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024. The action-adventure RPG sends Mario and Luigi across the island-fractured world of Concordia, mixing exploration and puzzles with turn-based battles built around timed actions.
What is Mario & Luigi: Brothership?
After the Uni-Tree is destroyed, Concordia breaks apart into separate islands. Mario and Luigi set out to reconnect the world, traveling aboard Shipshape Island—a vessel that is also an island. Along the way, they meet new characters including Connie and Snoutlet, as well as familiar faces such as Peach and Bowser. Nintendo’s announcement and launch page describe the game as an action-adventure RPG for Nintendo Switch.
How exploration and combat work
Explore Concordia by sea and land
Players steer Shipshape Island across the seas, search for islands and points of interest, then launch the brothers from the ship’s cannon to explore. Each island has its own setting and challenges, including puzzles and tasks that require Mario and Luigi to work together. Outside battle, Bros. Moves combine their abilities to get past obstacles.
Use timed actions in turn-based battles
Combat is turn-based, but actions are timed: players can act at the right moment and dodge or counter enemy attacks. Mario’s actions use the A Button, while Luigi’s use the B Button. Bros. Attacks let the brothers combine their offense, and Luigi Logic can introduce additional ideas and actions during exploration and combat. These are Nintendo’s descriptions of the mechanics, not independent assessments of difficulty or performance. Nintendo’s feature overview explains the systems.

Can you start with Brothership?
Yes. Nintendo says previous Mario & Luigi games are not required to enjoy Brothership. Its series explainer describes the games as action-adventure RPGs in which players control both brothers, explore, complete quests, and use turn-based combat. Brothership introduces a new setting and characters, so a newcomer can follow its Concordia adventure without prior series knowledge.
Switch editions, play modes, and price
Nintendo UK lists both a game card and a download edition. Its listing specifies single-system play in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, compatibility with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and a 10.0 GB download size. These are details on the UK listing; check your regional Nintendo store for local edition and storage information. Nintendo UK’s listing has the regional specifications.

- Consider it if: you want a single-player exploration RPG with island-hopping, puzzles, quests, and turn-based battles that use timed inputs.
- Think about the combat style: timed actions and dodges are part of the turn-based system, rather than combat being limited to choosing menu commands.
- Choose an edition: the Nintendo UK listing includes both game-card and download options; check your local store for regional details.
- Starting point: you do not need to have played earlier Mario & Luigi games, according to Nintendo.
Developer Ohashi told Nintendo, “We wanted players to feel that outcome of their actions.” In the Ask the Developer interview, that comment concerns how reconnecting islands changes Shipshape Island and makes its residents happier—a design link between the player’s progress and the world.
