You can play Mario Paint through the Super NES collection included with Nintendo Switch Online on either Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. On the original Switch, Nintendo says to connect a compatible USB mouse; Switch 2 owners can use Joy-Con 2 as a mouse. You do not need to buy a Switch 2 to play.
How to play Mario Paint on Nintendo Switch
- Make sure you have access to Nintendo Switch Online, where Mario Paint is available in the Super NES collection. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account and membership are required for online features. See Nintendo’s announcement and its Switch Online FAQ for service details.
- On an original Nintendo Switch, connect a compatible USB mouse. Nintendo notes that the mouse is sold separately.
- On Nintendo Switch 2, use Joy-Con 2 as a mouse instead. Nintendo presents this as an alternative for that console, not a requirement for playing the game.
What mouse works with Mario Paint on Switch?
Nintendo specifies a “compatible USB mouse” for the original Switch, but its announcement does not name supported brands or models. It therefore does not confirm that a particular mouse, wireless receiver, USB-C adapter, or dock setup will work. Check the mouse and console connection requirements before buying; the official guidance supports the USB mouse category, not a specific product recommendation.
What you can do in Mario Paint
The 1992 Super Nintendo classic is more than a drawing program. Nintendo describes using colors and tools to draw, making animated sequences, and writing music to accompany your artwork. The new control guidance lets Switch owners use a mouse for those creative activities without needing the original console.
