No Nintendo Switch 2 is required to play Mario Paint with a mouse. The game joined Nintendo Switch Online’s Super NES collection on July 28, 2025. On the original Nintendo Switch, connect a compatible USB mouse; on Switch 2, use a Joy-Con 2 as a mouse. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to access the game through the collection.
How to play Mario Paint with a mouse on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s July 28, 2025 announcement says to connect a compatible USB mouse, sold separately, to play on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo does not identify specific mouse models, so compatibility is not guaranteed for every USB mouse.
- Make sure you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, which is required to access Mario Paint through the Super NES collection.
- Connect a compatible USB mouse to your original Nintendo Switch.
- Open the Super NES collection and start Mario Paint.
Using Joy-Con 2 as a mouse on Switch 2
On Nintendo Switch 2, a Joy-Con 2 can act as a mouse in games that support mouse operation, including Mario Paint. Nintendo says to slide the controller over a surface with its mouse-sensor side facing down. The material of the surface can affect how the mouse responds.

Why mouse control matters in Mario Paint
Nintendo describes Mario Paint as a Super Nintendo game originally released in 1992. Its creative activities include drawing with colors and tools, making animated sequences, and writing music to accompany artwork. Nintendo’s 2025 announcement described the membership catalog as offering “over 150 classic games,” including Mario Paint. That was Nintendo’s catalog description at the time of the announcement; the available collection can change.
