Mario vs. Donkey Kong Review: Nintendo Remade the Wrong Game

The Switch remake adds co-op, new worlds and helpful options to a charming puzzle-platformer, yet most of its 2004 campaign remains familiar.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a polished, welcoming Switch remake of a clever 2004 Game Boy Advance puzzle-platformer. Its new co-op mode and accessibility options make it easier to recommend to families and returning fans, but most of the original campaign remains much as it was. That makes “the wrong game” a fair criticism of Nintendo’s choice of remake—not a verdict that this one is bad.

What kind of game is Mario vs. Donkey Kong?

Released for Nintendo Switch on February 16, 2024, Mario vs. Donkey Kong reworks the 2004 GBA game as a compact puzzle-platform adventure. Nintendo lists more than 130 levels across eight worlds. In each stage, Mario must read the layout, use his moves to navigate obstacles, and find a key to reach a Mini-Mario. Other levels ask him to guide a group of Mini-Marios safely to a toy box; each world ends with a Donkey Kong fight. Nintendo’s game overview describes the full set of modes and mechanics.

Mario can run, jump, climb and swing, as well as use handstands, backflips and picked-up objects to get through hazards. The appeal is less about speed or combat than planning a route and working out which move makes a small, self-contained puzzle possible.

What did the remake add—and what stayed the same?

Nintendo added two themed locations, Merry Mini-Land and Slippery Summit, and refreshed the visuals and music. The Switch release also brings local co-op, Casual Style, Plus Worlds, 16 unlockable Expert Levels and an unlockable Time Attack mode. These are meaningful additions, so calling the game merely a remaster would undersell the changes.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Vs. Donkey Kong™ - US Version
  • Jump and climb your way through over 130 puzzling levels as Mario to retrieve the Mini-Marios stolen by Donkey Kong
  • Overcome obstacles like spikes, lava, and falling bricks to make it to the end of each level
  • Revisit the original challenge in Classic Style, or try Casual Style for a more relaxed experience
  • Play through two new worlds, featuring new environments, enemies, and game mechanics
  • Join the action as Toad and work together in the newly-added co-op mode

The catch is that new features do not transform most of the original campaign. In its 2024 review, Nintendo Life describes the original six worlds as essentially as returning players remember them, with no notable changes to how those areas play. The remake is faithful and polished, but a returning player will find much of its central level design familiar rather than substantially reimagined.

How good is the new co-op?

Local co-op is the addition that most changes who the game works for. Two people play on one Switch, with the second player controlling Toad. Nintendo notes that some levels may differ in two-player mode. Nintendo Life found that Toad has real movement and objectives rather than serving as a passive helper, and singled out co-op as the remake’s most effective addition—especially for an adult playing alongside a younger child.

That makes co-op more than a bonus checkbox: it gives a partner a role in solving and navigating stages together. It is also the clearest reason to revisit a game whose original worlds otherwise preserve their old structure.

Is it too easy, or is it a good game for beginners?

Nintendo Life judged much of the main run easy for experienced players, with more demanding thinking concentrated in the post-game, particularly the Expert Levels. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measured difficulty rating. Still, it points to a real audience distinction: players looking for a consistently challenging solo puzzle-platformer may want more resistance than the main campaign provides.

Rank #3
Donkey Kong Bananza (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
  • A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
  • Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
  • Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more
  • Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together

For newer or younger players, the difficulty options are a strength. Classic Style keeps timed levels and one-hit defeats. Casual Style removes the timer, adds checkpoints and lets Mario take more hits. The extra breathing room makes it easier to learn the routes and movement without the same pressure. Players who want a tougher test can move on to Plus Worlds and Expert Levels, or unlock Time Attack.

Did Nintendo remake the wrong game?

That claim is about the choice of source material, not the quality of this remake. As summarized in Nintendo Life’s review roundup, Polygon called it “a good game” and “a good new version” while arguing it was not the best game in the series to remake. The roundup says Polygon would have preferred a remake of the 1994 Game Boy Donkey Kong.

That preference is an editorial judgment, not proof that Nintendo’s release failed. The Switch game has new worlds, presentation work, options and a co-op mode that reviewers praised. But if the aim was to revisit the series with a more substantial reinterpretation, the faithfulness of the original six worlds makes this a conservative pick. The criticism lands most strongly for returning solo players who already know those stages and want a fresh campaign.

Who should play the Switch remake?

  • Families and younger players: Casual Style eases time and failure pressure, while co-op gives a second player a meaningful part in the action.
  • Returning GBA fans: The refreshed presentation, extra worlds and modes offer reasons to revisit it, though most of the original six worlds remain familiar.
  • Experienced solo puzzle-platform fans: Consider it if you enjoy compact route puzzles and are willing to seek out the post-game challenge. The main run may feel easy.
  • Players choosing among the series’ older games: The Switch remake is the version with refreshed visuals, extra modes and local co-op. The GBA original preserves the source game, while Polygon’s reported preference for the Game Boy Donkey Kong reflects a taste for a different remake candidate. The available sources do not establish current availability or pricing for either older game.
