Mark Rosewater’s January 5, 2026 Making Magic article marked the start of Magic: The Gathering’s Lorwyn Eclipsed previews, promising a look at the set’s design, design teams, and preview cards. The set has since been released: it returns players to the paired plane of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, where the contrast between day and night shapes the setting and some of its mechanics.

What Mark Rosewater said ahead of the previews

Rosewater opened his January 5, 2026 article with the line, “Welcome to the start of Lorwyn Eclipsed previews.” He said the article would discuss the set’s design, introduce its design teams, and show preview cards. That establishes the beginning of previews; the article does not document a separate teaser before them. Read Rosewater’s article on Wizards’ site.

What is Lorwyn Eclipsed?

Lorwyn Eclipsed is a Magic set that revisits the paired plane of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor. Wizards describes the setting as shifting from eternal day into eternal night. Rosewater summarized its defining idea as “the duality of it, the light combined with the dark.” Wizards’ set archive and Rosewater’s design account provide the setting and design context.

How the duality appears in the mechanics

The set uses +1/+1 counters on the Lorwyn side and -1/-1 counters on the Shadowmoor side, echoing the plane’s mirrored identities. It also includes seven double-faced cards, though Rosewater says those cards are not a defining feature of Limited play.
