Marvel Contest of Champions has six champion classes arranged in a loop: Skill > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Tech > Mutant > Skill. A class has an advantage only over the adjacent class in that sequence. The advantage changes attack rating, giving a useful edge but never guaranteeing a victory. The defender’s abilities, your champion’s actual kit, and the quest nodes usually determine whether that edge becomes a practical counter.
The six-class wheel and how adjacency works
Read the class wheel as a continuous loop rather than a ranking from strongest to weakest:

| Class | Class advantage over | Class disadvantage against |
|---|---|---|
| Skill | Science | Mutant |
| Science | Mystic | Skill |
| Mystic | Cosmic | Science |
| Cosmic | Tech | Mystic |
| Tech | Mutant | Cosmic |
| Mutant | Skill | Tech |
The symbol Skill > Science means a Skill attacker has class advantage when fighting a Science defender. Continue clockwise through the sequence until Mutant loops back to Skill. Only neighboring classes interact this way. Skill does not gain an additional advantage over Mystic because Skill is above Science and Science is above Mystic; those relationships do not chain.

What happens when classes are adjacent
Class advantage is an attack-rating modifier. The advantaged attacker receives an attack-rating benefit against that adjacent class, while the disadvantaged side has its attack rating reduced in the unfavorable matchup. The game does not turn the matchup into an automatic win, and the wheel does not replace champion-specific abilities. A technically disadvantaged attacker can still win with better play, a more suitable kit, or favorable nodes.

What the wheel does not tell you
- It does not identify the single best champion in a class.
- It does not guarantee that a class can counter every ability used by the adjacent class.
- It does not provide an advantage against non-adjacent classes.
- It does not account for quest nodes, defender tactics, immunities, rotation requirements, or the player’s ability to use the champion.
What each class tends to do
Class identities are useful starting points, not fixed rulebooks. Community explanations on the official forums describe recurring patterns, but individual champion kits have exceptions and the roster changes over time. Treat the following as tendencies that help you form a shortlist, then verify the exact champion abilities.
Skill: bleed, critical pressure, and ability accuracy control
Skill champions commonly create pressure through bleed, critical hits, ability-accuracy reduction, or ways to shrug off debuffs. That makes Skill a natural first filter against Science defenders, because the class advantage is paired with tools that may interfere with defensive abilities. The interaction is not universal: a Science defender with bleed resistance, ability-accuracy protection, or a node that changes debuff behavior can require a different answer.
Science: debuffs, defensive effects, and selected power-gain answers
Science kits often revolve around applying debuffs and exploiting defensive abilities such as evade. Some Science champions also have abilities that can counter Mystic power gain. Science therefore has class advantage over Mystic, but the class label alone does not tell you whether a particular Science champion can stop the Mystic defender in front of you. Check which debuffs are available, whether they need a specific trigger, and whether the node permits them to function.

Mystic: buff control and power control
Mystic champions frequently manipulate buffs and power through mechanics such as nullify and stagger. Those tools are especially relevant against Cosmic defenders whose offense depends on active buffs. Mystic has class advantage over Cosmic, but a Cosmic defender may have protection against nullify, a way to punish missed controls, or a node that makes power management more important than buff removal. Choose the Mystic champion whose actual abilities address the defender’s sequence of buffs and specials.
Cosmic: buff-based damage and armor bypass
Cosmic champions are commonly associated with powerful buffs, high damage output, and ways to bypass or break armor. Cosmic has class advantage over Tech, and armor break can be particularly valuable when a Tech defender relies on armor buffs. Do not assume every Cosmic champion can remove armor or that every Tech defender uses armor as the main threat. Confirm the duration, trigger, and reliability of the relevant armor interaction.

Tech: armor, power control, and immunities
Tech kits often provide armor, power control, and immunities. Tech has class advantage over Mutant, so a Tech champion may be a sensible opening choice against a Mutant defender whose damage or specials are difficult to manage. The useful counter may be armor, power denial, or an immunity rather than the class bonus itself. A Mutant defender with a different source of damage can make those tools irrelevant.
Mutant: prowess, special-damage pressure, and resistances
Mutant champions commonly use prowess or other special-damage amplification, combine it with strong damage, or bring resistances that reduce particular threats. Mutant has class advantage over Skill and may mitigate some Skill bleed pressure through the right resistance or ability interaction. That does not make every Mutant champion safe against every Skill defender; verify whether the resistance applies to the incoming effect and whether the defender’s damage comes from a source you can actually reduce.

Use the wheel as your first filter, then work from the defender’s threat. This process prevents a class bonus from distracting you from a direct counter that would make the fight much safer.
- Identify the defender and class. Confirm the class icon and read the defender’s signature ability, persistent effects, and any information shown before the fight. Do not rely on memory if the defender has recently changed or you are entering unfamiliar content.
- Read every relevant quest node. Separate global nodes, lane nodes, fight-specific nodes, and defender tactics. Note restrictions on buffs, debuffs, power, healing, armor, energy damage, or ability accuracy before selecting a champion.
- Name the actual threat. Decide whether the problem is buff stacking, power gain, evade, bleed, armor, special damage, or a node effect. If you cannot state the threat in one sentence, you are not ready to choose a counter.
- Apply the class wheel. Start with the adjacent class that has advantage. This improves the attack-rating matchup, but it is only a shortlist and not a final verdict.
- Match a direct ability to the threat. Look for the attacker’s exact tool: nullify or stagger for buffs, power control for dangerous power gain, ability-accuracy reduction for defensive abilities, armor break for armor buffs, or an applicable immunity for a damaging effect.
- Check conditions and reliability. Confirm that the ability works on this defender, triggers under the fight’s conditions, and does not require a buff or debuff the node removes. Consider whether the counter depends on a particular combo, special level, distance, or timing window.
- Build a fallback. If your first choice is banned, unavailable, or difficult to pilot, select another champion that addresses the same threat. A non-advantaged champion with a dependable direct counter can be safer than an advantaged champion whose abilities do not interact with the defender.
Class counters, ability counters, and holistic counters
It helps to separate three ideas that are often mixed together:
- Class relationship: the adjacent-wheel advantage that modifies attack rating.
- Direct ability counter: one ability that interferes with a specific defender mechanic, such as power control against power gain or armor break against armor.
- Holistic champion counter: a complete kit whose abilities work together to neutralize several parts of the defender’s toolkit while remaining usable under the node.
A direct counter can matter more than the class relationship. For example, a champion with the correct buff-control tool may be preferable to another champion that has class advantage but cannot stop the defender’s buff cycle. A holistic counter goes further: it may address the defender’s buffs, damage type, and defensive protection in one plan. The best choice is the one that solves the fight’s actual failure point, not the one that merely displays a favorable class color.

Worked matchup: Wiccan against Terrax
The Wiccan-versus-Terrax discussion is a useful illustration of holistic counter selection. Wiccan brings Mystic class advantage against a Cosmic defender, but the appeal of the matchup is not limited to that rating modifier. The cited interaction combines immunity to armor break, recovery from energy damage, and neutralize against buffs. Those pieces address several parts of Terrax’s threat profile at once.
Use this as an example of how to think, not as a universal rule that every Mystic champion counters every Cosmic champion or that Wiccan is always the correct choice. If a node disables a relevant ability, changes energy damage, or imposes a different win condition, the interaction must be reassessed.
Why quest nodes can outweigh the class icon
Nodes change what a fight asks you to do. A defender who is normally manageable with buff control may become dangerous if a node punishes nullify or grants additional power. A champion who normally handles bleed may be unsuitable if a node prevents the necessary debuff or makes contact damage the primary risk. Conversely, a node can make a normally secondary tool—such as an immunity, power control, or armor interaction—the deciding factor.
Before launching the fight, make a short checklist:
- Which buffs or debuffs are allowed, removed, or punished?
- How does the defender gain power, and can your attacker control or avoid that gain?
- Are evade, miss, armor, bleed, or energy-damage effects modified?
- Does the node change ability accuracy or require a particular damage type?
- Can your chosen champion reach the required ability reliably within the fight’s time and health limits?

Problem: The class bonus improves attack rating, but the champion cannot answer the defender’s signature ability.

Fix: Identify the defender’s main threat first, then select an advantaged champion whose kit directly addresses it. If none exists, use a non-advantaged direct counter.
Assuming the wheel chains across multiple classes
Problem: A player treats Skill as advantaged against Mystic because Skill beats Science and Science beats Mystic.
Fix: Compare only the attacker and defender’s immediate positions on the loop. Advantage applies to adjacent classes only.
Treating class identity as a guaranteed ability
Problem: A player expects every Mystic champion to nullify buffs or every Cosmic champion to break armor.

Ignoring the defender’s source of damage
Problem: A player chooses a resistance or immunity that does not apply to the damage actually being dealt.
Fix: Determine whether the danger comes from a bleed, energy effect, physical hit, special attack, buff, or node interaction, then match the protection to that source.
Using an old matchup list as a permanent ranking
Problem: Community examples can age as champions, abilities, and content change.
Fix: Treat older examples as explanations of the interaction, not current roster rankings. Recheck the live ability descriptions and quest rules whenever a matchup matters.
A compact decision framework
| Question | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Are the classes adjacent? | Whether the attack-rating advantage or disadvantage applies. |
| What mechanic is causing the failure? | Whether you need buff control, power control, ability-accuracy reduction, armor interaction, resistance, or another tool. |
| Does the attacker’s kit contain that tool? | Whether the class candidate is a real counter rather than a favorable icon. |
| Do the nodes permit the interaction? | Whether the counter will function in this quest and game mode. |
| Can you execute the required rotation? | Whether the counter is reliable for your champion level and play style. |
The six classes are therefore best understood as a navigation aid. Start with Skill > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Tech > Mutant > Skill, apply the adjacent attack-rating modifier, and then move immediately to the defender’s abilities and the quest nodes. That combination—adjacency, threat mechanics, direct counter tools, and node conditions—is the information that turns a class advantage into a sound fight plan.
