Choose MARVEL Cosmic Invasion if you want a side-scrolling beat ’em up built around tag-team combat and co-op. Choose Marvel: Ultimate Alliance if you want to build a superhero squad for a broader adventure—and can get access to a compatible copy. They are both Marvel team games, but they are not the same kind of brawler.
How the games differ
| What matters | MARVEL Cosmic Invasion | Marvel: Ultimate Alliance |
|---|---|---|
| Core style | A tag-team beat ’em up, as described on the official game site. | Xbox’s description centers on assembling a superhero team for an epic quest. Activision describes Ultimate Alliance 2 specifically as an action/RPG; that label should not be treated as a precise genre description of every version of the first game. |
| Co-op information | Nintendo lists local and online co-op and cross-platform play for its Switch edition. | The Xbox One listing specifies online co-op for two to four players. |
| Documented platforms | At launch, Dotemu listed PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. | Xbox announced Xbox One releases in 2016. The games’ current availability depends on platform, region, and whether you already own a copy. |
| Physical editions | Dotemu announced Standard and Deluxe physical editions for Switch, Switch 2, and PS5. Check regional stock and edition details before buying. | The available evidence establishes a 2016 digital re-release and a 2018 report of digital delisting, not current new physical stock. |
Choose Cosmic Invasion for a straightforward brawler
Cosmic Invasion is the direct fit if “beat ’em up” is what you mean: the official site calls it a tag-team beat ’em up and says character abilities encourage creative team-ups. Its documented platform lineup includes current consoles as well as PC, and Nintendo lists local and online co-op for the Switch edition. The platform details matter: check the store page for the version you plan to play rather than assuming every co-op feature is identical everywhere.

Dotemu said the game launched for $29.99 and was included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. Those are launch-era terms, not a guarantee of today’s price or subscription availability. For current purchasing options, Dotemu has also announced physical editions for Switch, Switch 2, and PS5.

Ultimate Alliance appeals to a different preference: putting together a superhero team and taking it through an adventure. Xbox’s official listing describes that team-building premise, while Activision’s action/RPG description applies to Ultimate Alliance 2 specifically. If what you want is a Marvel squad-based adventure rather than a side-scrolling brawler, this may be the better match—provided you can access the edition and platform you want.

Check availability before choosing Ultimate Alliance
Game Informer reported in July 2018 that the 2016 digital re-releases of the Ultimate Alliance games had been delisted. The report said existing owners could continue playing; it does not establish that every edition is impossible to find now, or that a particular store currently sells it. Check your regional storefront and game library for the exact platform and edition. Do not assume an old product page means a new digital purchase is available.
What the player milestone means
In a 2026 DLC announcement, Dotemu said Cosmic Invasion had been played by more than 1.5 million players. That is a publisher-reported player milestone, not a figure for copies sold.

- Demolish and interact with everything in your path. Pummel your enemies by launching crushed cars, lampposts, machinery and anything else you can pick up in your way.
- Create and customize your ultimate team. Assemble your dream team from the Marvel Universe and select from over 24 playable characters, each with specialized powers.
- Cooperate with your ultimate alliance. Take full advantage of the Marvel Universe by playing Cooperative Mode with up to four friends, both online and offline.
- Pick a side in the ultimate ideological rift that could yield irreparable consequences for the Super Hero community! Support the pro-registration side and defend national security, or choose to be anti-registration and fight for personal liberties.
- Combine Super Hero powers for devastating results. Team up with Human Torch and Thor to create a spectacular fiery tornado. Over 250 unique fusions arm you with an unimaginable arsenal for unprecedented battles.
Verdict by play style
- Pick Cosmic Invasion for a current, explicitly side-scrolling tag-team beat ’em up with documented co-op options.
- Pick Ultimate Alliance for a superhero-team adventure, particularly if you already own or can locate a compatible edition.
For anyone deciding strictly on which game is the beat ’em up, Cosmic Invasion is the clear fit. Ultimate Alliance is an alternative for a different kind of team-based Marvel experience, not a like-for-like brawler.
