Before buying a PC deckbuilding game, check three things on the listing for the exact title: its requirements for your operating system, its support for the controller or handheld you plan to use, and the refund policy of the store taking your payment. These are separate questions: a game can meet its PC minimums but still be awkward with a controller, and Steam’s refund terms do not apply to purchases made elsewhere.
Will this deckbuilding game run on my PC?
Compare your computer with the minimum requirements on the store page for the exact game and operating system. Deckbuilders do not share one set of hardware requirements; even games in the same genre can differ substantially. Minimum requirements are a starting compatibility check, not a promise of a particular frame rate or experience on every system.

For example, Steam lists these Windows minimums for Balatro, its poker-inspired roguelike deckbuilder: a 64-bit processor and operating system; Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 x64; an Intel Core i3; 1 GB RAM; OpenGL 2.1-compatible integrated graphics; and 150 MB of available storage. Those specifications apply to Balatro, not to PC deckbuilding games generally. See the current Balatro Steam listing.

Check the game’s requirements separately from the store client’s own platform requirements. Steam notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024, while the Balatro listing includes older Windows versions among the game’s minimums. A game’s listed compatibility does not override the requirements of the software used to access or install it.

Does it support a controller?
Look for controller-support details on the individual store listing, then consider your particular setup. “Controller support” on a PC listing does not by itself establish that every controller, connection method, or control configuration will work equally well. If you plan to play with a gamepad, confirm that the listing’s information matches the kind of input you intend to use.
- Check the title’s controller-support disclosure on the store page.
- Confirm whether the game shows controller prompts and whether its menus can be navigated with a controller.
- If you need a specific controller or setup, look for confirmation that the game supports it rather than assuming compatibility from the genre.
Is it Steam Deck Verified?
If you intend to play on Steam Deck, check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility label and its accompanying details. Valve’s four labels describe Deck-specific compatibility: Verified means the game works well out of the box; Playable means it may require adjustments; Unsupported means it currently does not function on Deck; and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. Verified is the strongest out-of-the-box signal. Valve’s criteria cover controller support, appropriate input icons, readable display, seamless navigation, and system support. For the input criterion, Valve says a verified title should have full controller support and bring up the on-screen keyboard when needed. The Steamworks review criteria also say Deck controls should reach all game content through the default configuration; needing to choose a community layout manually or relying on touchscreen navigation can leave a title rated Playable instead. Can I refund a Steam game if I don’t like it?
For games bought directly on Steam, Valve’s standard refund offer is a request made within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime. Valve says buyers can still request a refund outside those standard conditions, though that is not a guarantee of approval. Consumers in some jurisdictions may also have additional rights. Steam’s process covers purchases made on Steam. Valve does not provide refunds through Steam for purchases made outside the platform, including third-party keys; for those, check the seller’s own terms before paying. Do not assume that another storefront offers Steam’s time limits or conditions.
