Marvel Rivals’ 2024 closed beta arrived amid strong signs of anticipation: the developer reported more than one million wishlists and a Discord community of over 200,000 members before the test. It also planned a beta player base more than five times the alpha’s. Those figures make “big hit” a fair description of the buildup and planned scale—not proof of how many people actually played. The official materials cited here do not give a final attendance count.
Why the closed beta looked like a big hit
In a May 30, 2024 announcement, Marvel Rivals reported that the game had passed one million wishlists and that its Discord community had grown beyond 200,000 members. Those are substantial pre-beta interest signals, but neither measures how many people entered the closed beta. Marvel Rivals’ May 30 announcement is the source for both figures.
In June, the development team said, “The player base for this CBT will be over five times larger than that of the Alpha test!” That was a plan for the test’s scale, not a published result. The statement gives no absolute participant count, and it should not be read as one. The developer’s June 20 update also discussed the move from alpha to beta.
What the 2024 test included
Marvel Rivals was announced as a 6v6, team-based PvP shooter featuring Marvel heroes, character synergies and destructible environments. Players could combine abilities while changing parts of the battlefield. NetEase Games’ announcement with Marvel Games described that premise.

The closed beta was scheduled from July 23, 2024, at 22:00 UTC until August 5, 2024, at 07:00 UTC. The official announcement listed 21 playable characters, four maps and three modes: Convoy, Domination and Convergence. The test was planned for PC and consoles across North America, Europe and Asia. The beta date and content announcement contains those details.
The beta added cross-platform play and expanded the character lineup, including Venom and Adam Warlock. It also offered more maps and modes than the earlier alpha announcement had described. That broader package and planned scale indicate an expanded test, but do not establish player satisfaction or retention.

How beta access worked—and what happened to progress
The official FAQ’s question was, “How do I get access to the CBT?” The answer applied to the 2024 test only: access routes included requesting a Steam Playtest, applying through console channels, receiving a code shared by a friend, earning access through Twitch Drops, or participating in community events. The beta ended on August 5, 2024, so these are historical routes, not current sign-up options.
The test was free and used data deletion: account information was to be erased when it ended. The FAQ said some rewards earned during the beta could be used after the official release. An internet connection was required. See the July 21, 2024 beta FAQ for the original terms.

The beta is over; the game later released
The closed beta ran in 2024 and is no longer open. Marvel Rivals later launched on Steam on December 6, 2024, according to SteamDB’s Marvel Rivals listing. That is the Steam release date, not a beta date; it does not report how many people attended the closed beta.
