NetEase has acknowledged that some Marvel Rivals players were wrongly banned after running the game through compatibility software on macOS and Linux devices, including Steam Deck. But the developer’s latest major anti-cheat statement, issued on May 25, 2026, was about permanently removing accounts it said were confirmed cheaters—not an admission that legitimate Windows players are routinely being punished.
The controversy therefore involves two separate issues: a documented false-positive incident from January 2025 and a later enforcement campaign targeting cheating, client tampering and unauthorized assistance tools.

What “anti-cheat overreach” means in Marvel Rivals
In this case, anti-cheat overreach refers to the risk that legitimate players are punished because detection systems misinterpret compatibility software, background utilities or other indirect signals as evidence of cheating. The concern became especially serious when some players reported bans lasting 100 years—effectively permanent restrictions—after playing Marvel Rivals through Wine, Proton, CrossOver or related compatibility layers.

That does not mean every Mac, Linux or Steam Deck player was banned. Marvel Rivals officially supported Windows, while compatibility-layer users were running outside the game’s standard configuration. Unsupported does not mean dishonest, but it can create additional compatibility problems for anti-cheat software.

NetEase has acknowledged one specific false-ban incident. It has not admitted that its broader detection system routinely bans legitimate Windows players, nor has the available public evidence established that the entire anti-cheat system is unreliable.
The January 2025 false-ban incident
In January 2025, players using compatibility-layer software on macOS and Linux—including Steam Deck users running the Windows version through Proton—reported unusually long cheating bans. NetEase said some of those players had been mistakenly identified as cheaters because of the software used to run the game.
According to the developer’s statement, it identified the reasons for the false bans and compiled a list of affected players. It also said that players who believed they had been wrongly penalized could appeal, that fair players would not be intentionally banned, and that detection accuracy would be improved. GamingOnLinux reported the substance of NetEase’s January statement, while Ars Technica reported that the wrongful bans affecting identified Mac and Steam Deck players were lifted.

The distinction matters: NetEase reversed the known false-positive bans connected with that incident, but the available statements do not prove that every individual appeal was successful or that all future compatibility-layer configurations are safe.

What NetEase says its anti-cheat system does
In its May 25, 2026 announcement, NetEase described a multi-stage enforcement process involving:
- Telemetry collected from game activity.
- Detection of abnormal behavior.
- Reviews of historical data.
- Manual verification.
- Automated enforcement based on newly identified cheat signatures.
That is the developer’s description of its process, not an independent audit. It also does not reveal the precise signals that trigger a penalty—something anti-cheat providers generally avoid explaining in detail because doing so could help cheaters evade detection.
NetEase said the May enforcement action followed the discovery of unauthorized third-party enhancements and that accounts confirmed to be using cheats, illicit assistance programs or client tampering were permanently banned. A PC Gamer report cited totals of 485 account bans and three hardware bans. Those figures should be treated as reported numbers rather than an independently audited total.

The May 2026 launch-parameter rumor
NetEase also addressed a circulating claim that a Steam launch parameter could disable Marvel Rivals’ anti-cheat. The developer said the anti-cheat starts alongside the game client and that the parameter only hides its pop-up window; it does not deactivate the system.

- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance
- Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
- Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
- Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
That is NetEase’s technical assertion. The available evidence does not independently verify the behavior, so players should not treat either the rumor or the denial as conclusive technical proof. More importantly, attempting to bypass or interfere with anti-cheat software is a poor strategy: it can create a separate enforcement risk even if the rumored parameter does not work as claimed.
What software can create enforcement risk?
NetEase maintains an official prohibited software and hardware list. Examples include:
- Cheat Engine
- YDArk
- PCHunter
- PowerTool
- API Monitor
- Process Hacker
- Process Monitor
- System Informer
- x64dbg
- WinDbg
- OllyDbg
The list also covers broader categories of hardware and software, including tools associated with debugging, process inspection, memory editing, macros, input modification and client manipulation. It is not a guarantee that every listed program automatically causes a ban in every configuration. The wording warns that using prohibited items while Marvel Rivals is running may result in penalties.
Players should therefore avoid blanket conclusions such as “all overlays cause bans” or “every controller utility is forbidden.” Community reports can identify possible problem cases, but they cannot establish the exact detection trigger or prove that a particular ordinary application caused a specific ban. The official list and current support guidance should take priority.

Why concerns remain after the reversal
Competitive games need effective anti-cheat enforcement. If detection is too weak, cheaters can damage ranked play and make legitimate matches feel pointless. But aggressive detection creates a different problem: a false positive can remove an innocent player’s access, potentially for an extremely long time.
The risk is more complicated for users in edge cases:
- Compatibility layers: Proton, Wine and CrossOver can place players outside the officially supported Windows configuration. The 2025 reversal does not guarantee that every future setup will behave correctly.
- Background utilities: Debuggers, process monitors, memory tools, macro software and input remappers may overlap with categories that anti-cheat systems treat as suspicious. Players should consult NetEase’s current prohibited list rather than rely on anecdotes.
- Shared devices and networks: NetEase says severe cases may lead to device or IP bans. Shared household computers, dormitory networks, apartments and carrier-grade NAT could create complications for unrelated players, although the public statement does not explain how such cases are handled.
- Free-to-play accounts: Some players argue that account-only bans are easier to evade when a new account can be created. Others have called for more hardware-level enforcement. Those are competing policy arguments, not proof that account bans are ineffective or that hardware bans solve cheating.
NetEase has also introduced a ranked-compensation response for players affected by confirmed cheaters. A PC Gamer report described a system intended to restore ranked points lost because of confirmed cheating. That addresses the damage cheaters cause to their opponents; it does not establish that false-positive bans have been permanently eliminated.
What to do if you believe you were wrongly banned
- Open the game’s in-game reporting or support interface.
- Select Appeal Ban if that option is available.
- If necessary, use the official Marvel Rivals Discord support channel or anti-cheat bot. The official FAQ lists the in-game appeal route and Discord support options.
- Include your account ID, platform, approximate ban time, operating system and—if relevant—the compatibility layer used.
- List background software that was running and attach screenshots of the ban notice.
- Preserve relevant logs and document your setup before uninstalling software or changing the system.
Do not create replacement accounts to evade the restriction. That may create a separate enforcement issue and make the original appeal harder to assess. Also avoid trying to disable or bypass anti-cheat software.

NetEase’s published guidance does not promise a universal response time, a guaranteed reversal standard or disclosure of the exact detection rule. A support appeal is the appropriate route, but players should not assume that every case will be resolved identically.
The timeline in brief
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 2025 | NetEase acknowledged false bans affecting some players using compatibility-layer software on macOS and Linux devices, including Steam Deck. It said affected bans were lifted and detection would be improved. |
| March 2026 | NetEase warned about enforcement involving mouse macros and unusually fast inputs, according to contemporary coverage. |
| May 25, 2026 | NetEase announced a targeted anti-cheat enforcement wave, permanent account bans for confirmed violations, possible device or IP penalties, and a denial that a rumored launch parameter disables anti-cheat. |
Bottom line
NetEase has responded to a documented false-positive incident involving some macOS and Linux/Steam Deck players, and the identified wrongful bans were lifted. Its later May 2026 announcement was a separate crackdown aimed at confirmed cheating and client tampering.
The fairest conclusion is neither “Marvel Rivals bans everyone using unsupported systems” nor “the anti-cheat is broadly broken.” The public evidence shows that false positives have occurred, while NetEase continues to defend and expand a multi-layered enforcement system. Players using compatibility layers or sensitive utilities should understand the support limitations, check the official prohibited list, and use the formal appeal process if penalized.
