Xbox’s latest restructuring did cut thousands of jobs, but it did not repeat the previous wave in exactly the same way. On July 6, 2026, Microsoft said it would eliminate approximately 3,200 Xbox-related roles, including about 1,600 immediate cuts. The company said no publicly announced first-party games were canceled in that round. The best-known cancellations—Perfect Dark and Everwild—belonged mainly to the July 2025 cuts, while several studios were closed in May 2024.
Across three years, Xbox has moved from aggressive expansion to consolidation, cancellations, and studio divestitures. As of August 16, 2026, the evidence points to a continuing contraction and reorganization—not one single event in which every named studio was shuttered.

What happened in the July 2026 Xbox layoffs?
In its July 6, 2026 announcement, Microsoft described the move as an Xbox “reset.” Approximately 3,200 Xbox-related roles were targeted during fiscal 2027, with roughly 1,600 cuts taking place immediately.
The reductions affected Xbox Game Studios, Activision, Bethesda and ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, and Mojang. Microsoft said its studio portfolio had expanded aggressively since 2018 and that future investment would be concentrated on higher-priority projects. The company also said it expected Xbox to return to growth in 2027.

Most importantly for players, Xbox said that no publicly announced first-party games were being canceled as part of the 2026 reductions. That is the company’s stated position, not a guarantee that projects will be unaffected. Staffing, budgets, schedules, scope, leadership, publishing arrangements, and support plans can still change. Unannounced projects may also be canceled without being identified publicly.
Which studios were affected in 2026?
| Studio | 2026 status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Compulsion Games | Returning to independence | Not a closure. The proposed arrangement reportedly allowed the studio to retain its catalog, intellectual property, and financial runway. |
| Double Fine Productions | Returning to independence | Also a separation from Xbox ownership, rather than a shutdown. |
| Ninja Theory | Being offered for sale | The studio was not described as immediately closed. Its future ownership remained unresolved in the announcement. |
| Undead Labs | Being offered for sale | A planned divestiture is different from shutting down the team. |
| Arkane Lyon | Under review | A consultation process in France was assessing options. A review is not confirmation of closure, sale, or cancellation. |
| id Software | Layoffs reported | The studio suffered reductions but remained operational. In a statement reported by Windows Central, id said it retained the staff needed to continue making games and technology. |
The distinction matters. A closure ends a studio under its parent company. A divestiture or spin-off can preserve the team while changing who owns, funds, publishes, or controls its projects. For the independent studios, the practical questions include whether Xbox retains any publishing or Game Pass rights, who owns future projects, and whether existing contracts remain in place.

The canceled games most associated with the headline came from the previous layoff wave, announced on July 2, 2025.

Rare’s Everwild, announced in 2019, was also canceled during the 2025 reductions after a prolonged development period. The game had undergone major changes during production and never received a release date.

ZeniMax Online’s “Blackbird”
An unannounced ZeniMax Online project widely reported under the code name Blackbird was canceled. Because it had never been formally revealed, it should be described as a reported cancellation rather than as a previously announced Xbox title.

Xbox also wound down several other unannounced projects, but it did not publish a complete list. Rumored projects or studios should not be treated as confirmed casualties.

- Arkane Austin
- Tango Gameworks
- Alpha Dog Games
Roundhouse Studios was folded into ZeniMax Online Studios rather than continuing as a separate standalone studio.
Tango Gameworks illustrates why “shuttered” can be misleading. Microsoft closed the studio, but Krafton later acquired Tango. In other words, Tango ceased to be a Microsoft studio but was not permanently erased as a company or development team.
The full Xbox restructuring timeline
- January 2024: Microsoft Gaming cut approximately 1,900 positions, primarily affecting Activision Blizzard and related operations.
- May 2024: Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games were closed. Roundhouse was merged into ZeniMax Online.
- July 2, 2025: Microsoft announced approximately 9,000 company-wide cuts. The Xbox-related fallout included the cancellation of Perfect Dark, Everwild, and the reported Blackbird project, along with the closure of The Initiative.
- July 6, 2026: Xbox announced approximately 3,200 role reductions, studio separations, planned sales, and a review of Arkane Lyon. Xbox said publicly announced first-party projects were not canceled in that round.
The numbers should not be conflated. The approximately 9,000 cuts in July 2025 covered Microsoft company-wide, not Xbox alone. Likewise, the approximately 4,800 company-wide cuts reported in July 2026 included the Xbox restructuring; the Xbox-specific figure was approximately 3,200.

Why is Xbox changing its studio strategy?
Xbox explicitly said it had expanded its portfolio aggressively and would now invest with more focus and discipline. That explains the confirmed shift from ownership and expansion toward consolidation, independence deals, and sales.
A reasonable interpretation is that Microsoft is trying to improve returns from a large and expensive collection of studios while prioritizing projects and franchises with stronger commercial prospects. That is analysis rather than a complete, officially stated diagnosis: the available announcements do not prove that one factor—such as Game Pass, hardware sales, artificial intelligence, or the Activision Blizzard acquisition alone—caused the layoffs.
The structural change is clearer than any single cause. Xbox acquired and expanded its portfolio, then consolidated teams, canceled long-running projects, closed studios, and began separating some developers from Microsoft ownership. The 2026 reset suggests that divestiture can now be part of Xbox’s normal portfolio management.

- Announced games are not automatically canceled. Xbox’s 2026 statement specifically said publicly announced first-party projects were not being canceled in that round.
- Continuation does not mean unchanged development. A project can survive while losing staff, changing scope, slipping schedules, or moving to a different owner.
- Independent studios may gain autonomy. They may also lose Microsoft’s financial backing and must clarify their own publishing and funding arrangements.
- Game Pass plans may change. Players should not assume that a divested studio’s future games will have the same Xbox platform or subscription arrangements.
- Fewer experimental projects may receive long development cycles. The cancellation of projects that spent years in development suggests a more selective approach to funding, although the company has not announced that every experimental game will be abandoned.

So the headline “Xbox hit hard with layoffs: from canceled games to a shuttered studio” describes a real pattern, but it compresses three distinct rounds into one. The canceled games and major closure were principally part of 2025; the 2024 closures came earlier; and the 2026 reset has so far centered on layoffs, ownership changes, and strategic review rather than a confirmed mass cancellation of announced games.
