Start with the kind of job you want to do for your team: hold the frontline, pursue damage opportunities, or support teammates. Then choose a hero whose actual abilities, range, movement, defensive tools, and Team-Up effects fit the way you want to play. Role labels narrow the roster; they do not tell you everything about a hero’s feel.
Choose the team job you want
Marvel Rivals groups heroes into three roles. Epic’s guide describes the broad distinctions, while the official Heroes Gallery is the place to check individual abilities and Team-Up details.
Vanguard: hold ground and make space
Consider a Vanguard if you want to stay near the frontline, defend allies, and push enemies back. That is the role’s general job, but each Vanguard’s abilities determine how they create space and protect the team.
Duelist: pursue damage opportunities
Consider a Duelist if dealing damage and pursuing eliminations is the part of a match you most enjoy. Epic characterizes Duelists as damage-focused and warns against staying exposed for long. Look beyond the role label to see how a particular hero engages and escapes.

Strategist: support teammates
Consider a Strategist if you like keeping track of teammates and helping them through healing or other support. Support kits differ: the abilities on the official profile show what each hero actually contributes, including any ally buffs.
Compare heroes by the decisions their kits ask you to make
After settling on a role, compare a few heroes within it. The official profiles list abilities, base stats, and Team-Up abilities; use those details to judge whether a kit sounds enjoyable to practice.

- Range and engagement: Does the hero fight at a distance or need to get close? What kind of openings does the kit ask you to look for?
- Mobility: Check how the hero moves, enters a fight, or repositions.
- Survival and protection: Look for tools that help the hero survive or protect allies.
- Timing and mechanics: Consider whether the abilities call for precise aim, careful timing, or combos you would enjoy learning.
- Team-Up interactions: Check which Team-Up abilities are available and whether those interactions appeal to you.
These are comparison questions, not a universal difficulty ranking. How demanding or strong a hero feels can depend on your playstyle and the current patch.
Use examples to understand playstyle, not to pick a current winner
Epic Games Store’s guide, published December 6, 2024, offers dated examples of how different kits can feel: Doctor Strange has shields and traversal, Groot offers area control, Squirrel Girl has area damage, and Luna Snow has a healing-oriented kit. The guide covered 33 heroes at the time; that historical count is not a current roster total or a recommendation list.
Check current information before settling on a hero
Balance updates can change both role-wide mechanics and individual heroes, so older guides and tier lists may no longer describe how a kit works. NetEase’s July 6, 2026 post, titled “Marvel Rivals Version 20260710 Balance Post,” describes global changes to ultimate-energy conversion for all three roles, introduces Regenerative Shields, and includes hero-level adjustments. Its publication date makes it a dated example of patch sensitivity, not proof that it is the latest update.
A January 13, 2026 post, “Version 20260116 Balance Post,” also details changes across all three roles and Team-Up abilities. Check the latest official notes and hero profiles rather than treating either dated post as a current verdict. NetEase specifically recommends reading balance changes alongside Team-Up showcase videos and detailed stat and effect breakdowns on its official website.

A simple way to make your choice
- Decide whether you would rather hold the frontline, pursue damage, or support teammates.
- Open the relevant hero profiles in the official Heroes Gallery and compare abilities, range, mobility, survival tools, and Team-Up interactions.
- Choose the kit whose decisions sound fun to practice, then try another hero if those abilities feel uncomfortable.
There is no substantiated universal easiest or strongest pick here. A hero that matches the match experience you want is a more useful starting point than an undated ranking.
