If Marvel Rivals feels laggy in PS5 matches, first check whether the problem is network latency or local frame stutter. Check current Marvel Rivals and PlayStation Network status, then choose the available in-game server with the lowest displayed latency. If the problem continues, restart your PS5 and router, and test a wired connection if possible.
First identify what “lag” looks like
Different symptoms point to different problems. Note what happens during a match before changing settings:
- High or changing ping: the in-game latency indicator rises, and actions may register late.
- Rubber-banding or a network warning: your character or other players appear to jump or snap back, which can indicate an unstable connection.
- Disconnection: the game loses its online session rather than merely responding slowly.
- Frame stutter or hitching: the picture pauses or skips. Visual stutter alone does not establish that your internet connection is the cause.
- Delayed input without a network warning: record when it occurs and whether it coincides with visual stutter or a change in ping.
Marvel Rivals requires online play on PS5, but that does not mean every performance problem is a network problem. The PlayStation Store listing identifies the PS5 game as requiring an online connection: Marvel Rivals on PlayStation Store.
Check service status before troubleshooting your home network
Check the current Marvel Rivals and PlayStation Network status before restarting equipment or changing network settings. Status can vary over time and by service; no live outage or all-clear can be inferred here. If a service issue is reported, wait for it to be resolved and try again before treating your home connection as the cause.

Select the lowest-latency available Marvel Rivals server
Open Marvel Rivals’ server-selection options and check the latency shown for the available nodes. Select the available server with the lowest latency for your location. The game’s official guide says ping affects combat responsiveness and explains that players can select one or more server nodes; the release FAQ likewise directs players to choose the lowest-latency server for matchmaking.

The official guide lists nodes in North America (Oregon, Dallas and Northern Virginia), Europe (Frankfurt and Warsaw), the Middle East (Dammam), South America (São Paulo), and Asia-Pacific (Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney). This is published context, not a live availability list: use the current choices and latency shown in your game rather than assuming every listed node is available to you.

Restart the PS5 and improve the connection path
If service status is normal and the lowest-latency server still feels poor, try PlayStation’s general connection steps. They may help with a local connection problem, but they cannot guarantee a fix for remote server latency, ISP routing, or an outage.
- Restart the PS5. Then launch Marvel Rivals again and check whether the same symptom remains.
- Restart your modem and router. Follow the equipment maker’s normal restart procedure, allow the connection to return, and test another match.
- Try Ethernet if you can. Connect the PS5 to the router with a cable that reaches between them, then compare the match experience. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option; using a cable does not guarantee lower latency to a remote server.
- If you use Wi-Fi, improve placement. Move the PS5 nearer the router and reduce obstructions or nearby sources of interference where practical.

Work out whether the problem is specific to Marvel Rivals
Try another online game or check whether other devices using the same network are also having trouble. If several services are affected, that is useful evidence to take to your internet provider or router manufacturer; it does not by itself prove which part of the connection is responsible. If other games work normally but Marvel Rivals continues to lag, note the selected server, displayed latency, exact symptom, and approximate time before contacting Marvel Rivals support.

The cause of an individual player’s lag cannot be identified from the symptom alone. Location, selected server and its displayed latency, connection type, current service status, and whether other games are affected all matter.
