In Marvel Rivals, choose Vanguard if you want a frontline role, Duelist if you want to focus on damage, or Strategist if you want to support the team with healing and other team-oriented abilities. Those labels describe broad contributions—not one fixed play style for every hero—so compare individual kits before choosing a main.
How the three roles differ
The official Marvel Rivals hero roster labels heroes as Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist and describes their individual abilities. That makes role a useful first filter: it points toward the kind of contribution you want to make, while the hero’s abilities determine how that contribution feels in play.
| Role | Choose it if you want to… | What to compare between heroes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | Be present at the frontline and help create room for the team. | How each hero’s abilities and tempo feel to you. The role label does not establish one universal Vanguard play pattern. |
| Duelist | Focus primarily on dealing damage. | Range, mobility, and individual mechanics; Duelists are not interchangeable. |
| Strategist | Support teammates through healing and other team-oriented abilities. | How each hero delivers support, and how much direct combat you want alongside it. |
Which role should you try first?
Start with the team contribution you would enjoy most: frontline presence, damage, or support. Then try more than one hero in that role. A class label summarizes broad team function, but the specific abilities and mechanics shape the moment-to-moment experience.
If you are undecided, there is no evidence-based reason to treat one class as the universal beginner choice. The official material does not provide a role difficulty ranking, role win-rate comparison, or universal recommendation for new players. Use your enjoyment of a hero’s kit as the deciding factor rather than assuming a role is objectively stronger or easier.

Why the hero matters as much as the role
NetEase’s developer article describes a design process that first finds a hero’s fit among the three classes, then builds abilities and mechanics around that choice. In other words, the role is part of a hero’s design, not a complete description of how that hero plays. Read the ability descriptions on the official roster and consider whether the hero’s particular tools suit your preferred combat style.
Balance changes can affect your favorite
Hero tuning changes over time, so a role comparison is not a permanent ranking of strength. The official Version 20260911 Balance Post, published September 8, 2026, includes adjustments to heroes in all three classes as well as a shared change to Strategist energy generation. These are patch-specific tuning changes, not role performance statistics or proof that one class is stronger. Check current official patch notes if you are making a balance-sensitive decision after that update.
