Marvel Rivals drew more than 444,000 concurrent players on Steam on launch day, December 6, 2024—but the claim that it had the year’s fifth-highest Steam launch is not independently verifiable from the available ranking details. The 444,000-plus figure is a Steam-only concurrent count, not the total number of people playing across platforms.
How many people played Marvel Rivals at launch?
Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, 6v6 team-based PvP shooter. NetEase announced its global release for December 6, 2024, across Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Games Store and the game’s official website. NetEase’s launch announcement described it as a “free-to-play Super Hero Team-Based PVP Shooter game.”
On December 9, 2024, Game Developer reported that SteamDB data showed more than 444,000 concurrent players on Steam on launch day. Concurrent players are people playing at the same time; this is not a count of everyone who played that day. Game Developer’s report also said 10 million people logged in across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S during the first weekend. That cross-platform first-weekend figure and the Steam launch-day concurrent count measure different things and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.
Was it the fifth-biggest Steam launch of the year?
A TheGamer headline described Marvel Rivals as having the “fifth-highest Steam count of 2024,” but the article body was not accessible to confirm the ranking method. The available information does not establish whether fifth place refers to launch-day concurrent peaks, lifetime peaks reached during 2024, or another Steam metric, nor does it identify the comparison set. TheGamer’s headline is therefore evidence that the claim was made, not enough to verify its ranking.

Steam figures cover concurrent players on Steam only. They do not count console players or all PC players on other storefronts. Without a defined metric, eligible game list and cutoff date, “fifth-highest launch” should be treated as an attributed headline claim rather than a confirmed overall ranking.
How did Marvel Rivals’ later Steam peak compare?
The launch-day count is not the game’s all-time Steam peak. SteamDB records a peak of 644,269 concurrent Steam players on January 11, 2025, later than launch day. SteamDB’s chart distinguishes that later all-time record from the more-than-444,000 concurrent players reported for December 6, 2024.

What did free-to-play mean for the heroes?
NetEase said all heroes would be unlocked and free-to-play at launch and beyond. The official launch announcement states that commitment; it is separate from the player-count and ranking figures.
