What kind of fighting game is MARVEL Tōkon?
Rather than pairing one fighter against one opponent, Tōkon asks each player to assemble a four-character Marvel team and switch among its members. PlayStation’s announcement describes a tag system built around team combinations, with character attacks grouped as Normal, Special, and Unique moves. The game was developed by Arc System Works, known for the Guilty Gear series, alongside PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games.

Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said the developers considered 1v1 and 3v3 formats before choosing 4v4 to put more characters into the action and make team-ups central to the experience. In a June 4, 2025 PlayStation Blog post, Sekine said the format was intended to create “over-the-top moments” and evolve the tag-fighting genre. This describes the design goal, not an independent assessment of how the game plays.

The developers also described 4v4 switching as a new challenge for the team. In an August 11, 2025 PlayStation Blog interview, Marvel Games Senior Product Development Manager Michael Francisco characterized the art direction as a blend of Marvel and American comics with Japanese anime and manga.

Release date and platforms
The game is already out. It launched August 6, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PC. The official FAQ names Steam and Epic as PC storefronts. PlayStation’s February 12 announcement lists August 7 as the launch date for New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea.
How the 4v4 format and modes work
PlayStation’s store listing describes team composition, combos and synergies, and dynamic stages. It also lists Episode Mode, local play, and an online lobby that supports up to 64 players. Those are official feature descriptions, not independent performance or balance findings.

Launch roster
The official FAQ lists 20 launch characters:
- Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, and Storm
- Magik, Wolverine, Danger, Spider-Man, and Ms. Marvel
- Star-Lord, Peni Parker, Ghost Rider, Blade, and Deadpool
- Loki, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage
Offline and online play
The FAQ lists offline Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, Character Guides, and Arcadia Rumble. It says these offline modes do not require PlayStation Plus on PS5 or a PlayStation account on PC.
Online play has different requirements by platform: PS5 online play and other online features require an internet connection and PlayStation Plus; PC online play requires an internet connection and a PlayStation account. The FAQ also lists adjustable CPU difficulty and button configuration. On PS5, Access Controller support is available through the platform’s settings.

PS5 and PC requirements
PlayStation’s store listing names 3D Audio, 4K upscaling, and DualSense haptics as PS5 features. These are listed capabilities, not independently verified technical results.
The official PC FAQ specifies Windows 11 and 16 GB of RAM for both minimum and recommended configurations. It cautions that the game may run on other specifications, but performance, graphics, or other technical limitations may result.

A physical PS5 Standard Edition is available. The FAQ says owners of that edition can purchase a Deluxe or Ultimate upgrade through PlayStation Store. The Year 1 pass covers the first four additional DLC characters and one additional stage, along with battle-result poses for the base roster.
Which version makes sense for you?
- Choose PS5 or PC based on where you play. Both platforms are supported; PC is sold through Steam and Epic. Check current regional availability and price in the relevant store.
- Choose Standard if you want the base game. The physical option listed by the FAQ is the PS5 Standard Edition.
- Consider Digital Deluxe if you want the Year 1 pass. Its listed additions are four DLC characters, a stage, roster battle-result poses, and two lobby items.
- Consider Ultimate for its extra cosmetics. It includes the Deluxe contents plus color variations for the launch roster and five costumes.
- Check online requirements before buying for multiplayer. PS5 online features require PlayStation Plus; PC online play requires a PlayStation account and internet.
- For local matches, plan for another controller if needed. The store lists local play, but an extra controller is optional rather than a stated requirement.
- On PC, compare the full system against the official tiers. Matching one listed component alone does not establish expected performance.
Accessibility and language options
The official FAQ lists 17 supported languages: ten with full localization and seven with text-only support. It also states that text-to-speech is available in all 17. Button configuration and adjustable CPU difficulty are listed options; PS5 Access Controller support is configured through PS5 platform settings.
