Choose a hero you genuinely want to practice, make sure the in-game Ease of Use rating is manageable, then build a four-character team around range and assist coverage. For most newcomers, Captain America, Ms. Marvel, or Wolverine are the safest starting points; Iron Man and Spider-Man are also relatively approachable. Put a dependable pair in the first two slots because MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls begins a match with only those two teammates available. The third and fourth become available after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or after you lose a round.
What a “main” means in MARVEL Tōkon
Your main is the character you understand well enough to choose when you want a reliable starting point. In a four-versus-four tag fighter, that does not mean you will leave the other three characters unused. You will learn your main’s movement, attacks, defensive options, basic combos, assist call and switch timing first, then use the rest of the team to create situations your main cannot create alone.

The choice should therefore balance two tests:
- Motivation: you like the hero or villain enough to repeat drills and lose matches while learning.
- Manageability: the character’s Ease of Use rating and controls let you concentrate on decisions rather than fighting the controls.
Arc System Works Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine makes the same priority explicit in the July 20, 2026 PlayStation Blog beginner guide: “That’s why we recommend starting with the hero you like most and gradually expanding your roster from there.” Treat the rating as a starting signal, not a permanent ranking. A character with more stars may be easier to operate immediately, while a lower-rated character may still be the right long-term choice if you enjoy the way that character fights.

Use Ease of Use stars as your first filter
The game displays an Ease of Use rating for each character. More stars indicate an easier character to use. The official beginner guidance places the launch characters below into broad learning groups; it does not publish a competitive tier list or a guaranteed strongest team.

| Character | Official beginner guidance | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Captain America | Beginner-friendly | A strong candidate when you want a clear first character and do not yet know which advanced systems you prefer. |
| Ms. Marvel | Beginner-friendly | Choose her if you enjoy the character and her star rating feels comfortable in the Startup Battle tutorial. |
| Wolverine | Beginner-friendly | A natural starting point for players who want an aggressive close-range game. |
| Iron Man | Relatively easy to learn | Useful for a player who prefers controlling space from farther away; the developer pairs him with Wolverine as a range example. |
| Spider-Man | Relatively easy to learn | A reasonable second group to test if his movement and attacks appeal to you. |
| Storm | More advanced | Expect a steeper learning curve; choose her because you want her specific tools, not because she is an easy first pick. |
| Danger | More advanced | Reserve extra practice time for learning her systems and interactions before judging the character. |
The guide does not state the star values for every launch character in the published advice, so do not infer an exact numerical rating from this table. Open the in-game character screen and compare the displayed stars when deciding between two candidates.
A step-by-step method for choosing your main
1. Start with the character you would willingly replay
Look at the launch roster and pick the hero or villain whose appearance, story or fantasy appeals to you. Interest matters because learning a fighting game involves repetition: movement drills, failed confirms, defensive mistakes and many matches where your plan does not work. A character you enjoy gives that practice a purpose.
2. Check the Ease of Use rating
If you are new to tag fighters, begin with one of the officially beginner-friendly choices: Captain America, Ms. Marvel or Wolverine. Iron Man and Spider-Man are also described as relatively easy to learn. This is a recommendation for reducing early friction, not a requirement. If your favorite is Storm or Danger, start there and accept that you will need more time in Training Mode.

The official Startup Battle tutorial covers individual-character fundamentals and team-based actions. Use it to answer practical questions: Can you perform the basic attack sequence consistently? Can you move and block without thinking about the buttons? Does the character’s normal attack range make sense to you? Can you call an assist without losing control of your main?
4. Test the character in a short Training Mode routine
- Repeat movement in both directions, including stopping cleanly next to a training opponent.
- Perform the simplest available combo with Quick Skills enabled.
- Call an assist, wait for its effect, and return to controlling your main.
- Try the same sequence while moving toward and away from the opponent.
- Record which action feels natural and which action causes repeated errors.
You are not trying to discover a complete combo route. You are checking whether the character’s rhythm and controls make you want to keep practicing.
5. Compare one alternative, not the entire roster
Play a few minutes with a second candidate that has a different feel. Comparing one close-range option with one long-range option usually reveals more than briefly touching every character. If Wolverine’s direct aggression appeals to you but Iron Man’s distance control feels more comfortable, you have already identified the first team-building question: which range do you want to control most often?

6. Keep the choice provisional
Call a character your main after you have enough familiarity to make decisions, not because you have selected a permanent identity. Sekine’s advice is to expand gradually. It is normal to change your main after learning how assists, switches and the full four-character team alter your preferred pace.
Build the four-character team around complementary jobs
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag fighter. A team therefore has four character slots, but the match does not expose all four at the opening bell. Your composition has two stages: the pair you can use immediately and the complete team that becomes available later.
Give the first two slots a complete game plan
Because only the first two team members are available at the start, those characters must cover your opening neutral exchanges, your safest assist calls and your first attempts to create momentum. Do not put two characters in the opening pair simply because they are your favorite names if neither can handle the range or tempo you expect during the first phase.
A practical opening pair contains:
- Your main: the character whose movement and attacks you are actively learning.
- A complementary partner: a teammate whose range, assist timing or pressure pattern gives your main a different way to approach.
This does not mean the opening pair must be one close-range and one long-range character. It means you should know what each partner contributes before the other two unlock.
Use range as the clearest beginner framework
Sekine’s second recommendation is direct: “If you’re unsure how to build a team, try combining close-range and long-range specialists.” Wolverine’s aggressive melee and Iron Man’s powerful ranged attacks are his illustration of that idea. It is an example of range complementarity, not proof that Wolverine and Iron Man are an optimal or tournament team.
| Team question | What to examine | Beginner test |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls close distance? | Which character is comfortable when the opponent is nearby? | Can you approach without spending every resource just to start offense? |
| Who controls long distance? | Which character can challenge or discourage an opponent from farther away? | Can you create a safe moment to call an assist or switch? |
| What does the assist add? | Does it cover an approach, extend pressure or interrupt the opponent’s plan? | Can you call it and still protect your main? |
| Who should be available first? | Which pair can function before the third and fourth characters unlock? | Play a short match using only the opening pair and note the gaps. |
| What happens after the full team arrives? | Do the later characters add a new range or merely duplicate an existing role? | Check whether the full lineup gives you another answer to a problem you actually face. |
Fill the last two slots with answers, not duplicates
Once your first pair works, choose the third and fourth characters to answer specific weaknesses. If the opening pair struggles to contest distance, add a character whose tools let you play farther away. If both characters need the same approach, add a partner whose assist or movement changes how the opponent must defend. If you already have a range plan, a later slot can be selected for a particularly useful assist rather than for another copy of the same attack pattern.

These are decision rules, not a hidden tier list. The official material does not establish a universal best team, a current competitive ranking or a win-rate advantage for any composition. Test the combinations you enjoy and keep notes on the situations each teammate solves.
Plan for the match’s staged team access
The team-access rule changes how you should think about order. PlayStation’s current FAQ says the remaining characters unlock after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or after losing a round. In practical terms, your full four-character plan is not available from the first exchange.
- Opening phase: you can use only team members one and two.
- Unlock event: a successful stage transition or wall-bounce can open the remaining characters.
- Round loss: losing a round also unlocks the remaining team members.
- Full-team phase: the third and fourth characters become available, allowing the assists and switches you planned for the complete lineup.
Do not treat a locked teammate as a failed team choice. Instead, evaluate whether your first pair can survive long enough to reach the unlock event and whether your plan still works after the full team appears. This is why early-match availability belongs beside range and ease of use when you order the lineup.

The beginner guide recommends learning assists before trying to rotate rapidly through direct character switches. An assist lets you call a teammate while continuing to control the active character. In the guide’s control explanation, pressing the assist input calls the teammate; directional inputs combined with L2 switch to team members. After an assist call, the game can display a brief “Switch?” prompt, giving you a cue to consider changing characters rather than switching automatically every time.
A safe assist practice loop
- Stand at a distance where your main is not immediately under attack.
- Press the assist input once and watch where the teammate appears and how long the action lasts.
- Move while the assist is active instead of immediately switching.
- Repeat the call while approaching, then repeat it while retreating.
- Use the directional input with L2 to switch only after you know what the assist created.
- Practice responding to the on-screen “Switch?” prompt without treating it as an obligation.
This sequence teaches the difference between using a teammate as support and handing control to that teammate. A good team needs both options, but you will make clearer decisions once you know what each assist does by itself.
Choose Quick Skills first, then add command inputs
Quick Skills are an appropriate starting point while you are learning a character. They reduce the execution burden so you can focus on spacing, assists and the order of your decisions. When the basic plan feels comfortable, test command inputs. Sekine’s guide says command inputs provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The trade-off is practical:
- Quick Skills: easier execution and more attention available for movement, defense and team timing.
- Command inputs: more demanding execution, with the potential for slightly higher damage and additional Skill Gauge generation.
Do not switch every move to a command input at once. Add one input to a reliable situation, such as a punish or a combo ender, and keep Quick Skills for actions you still miss under pressure. The goal is a repeatable sequence that works in a match, not a technically impressive input that fails whenever the opponent moves.

A practical first-week learning route
Session 1: learn one character and one partner
Complete Startup Battle with your intended main and the character you plan to place second. Learn the basic team actions shown there, then spend a short Training Mode session repeating one normal attack sequence, one Quick Skill and one assist call. End the session in local Versus or another low-pressure setting rather than adding two more characters immediately.
Session 2: test opening access
Play with only the first two characters in mind. Notice which situations make you wish the third or fourth character were available. That list is more useful than a vague feeling that the team is “missing something”: write down whether the problem was range, approach, defense, assist timing or damage.
Session 3: add the third character
Select a teammate that addresses the clearest gap. Practice the assist before practicing a switch. Then run the same opening sequence and check whether the new character changes a specific problem or merely adds another version of what you already had.
Session 4: complete the lineup
Add the fourth character only after you understand the first three. Use the same test: identify the situation the new teammate is meant to solve, then practice reaching that solution through an assist or a directional L2 switch.

When to change your main or rebuild the team
Change the main if practice feels like a chore
A difficult character is not automatically a bad choice, but persistent lack of interest is a real warning sign. Try one of the beginner-friendly characters for comparison, then decide whether the extra challenge is buying you a play style you actually want.
Reorder the team if the opening pair cannot function
If you repeatedly lose before the stage-transition or wall-bounce opportunity and your first two characters cannot cover basic approach and defense, move a more dependable teammate into an opening slot. The same four characters can feel different when their availability order changes.
Replace a teammate when the assist never solves a problem
Keep a character because the assist or switch gives your team a useful answer, not simply because the character is popular. If you cannot name the situation in which you call that teammate, test another option in the same slot.
Do not rebuild because of a single loss
The official guidance supplies no universal ranking and no player-outcome study proving one composition is strongest. Change a team after you have identified a repeatable problem, not after one opponent exposes a matchup you have not yet practiced.
Platforms, online requirements and optional controls
The official game page lists PS5 and PC versions and confirms cross-play. On PS5, online modes require an internet connection and PlayStation Plus. Offline and local content lets you practice or play without those online requirements, subject to the mode you select.
PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported, and button inputs can be customized. They are optional controls, not requirements for choosing a main, learning assists or building a team. Use the controller that lets you perform the required inputs consistently; changing hardware will not replace practice with movement, assists or switches.
Launch roster and release-date context
PlayStation’s 2026 information lists 20 playable launch characters. The stated launch date is August 6, 2026 in most regions, with August 7 in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Korea. These are dated launch facts, not a promise that the roster or balance will remain unchanged. Recheck the in-game roster and team-access behavior after substantial patches.

A simple decision framework for your first team
| Decision | Choose this when | Evidence to collect in play |
|---|---|---|
| Main character | You enjoy the character and can operate the basics at a manageable Ease of Use level. | You can move, attack, defend and call an assist without losing track of the match. |
| Opening partner | You need a teammate who covers a different range or supports the same plan safely. | The first two characters can handle the opening before the rest unlocks. |
| Third slot | You have identified a specific weakness in the opening pair. | The assist or switch gives a real answer to that weakness. |
| Fourth slot | You understand the first three and want another distinct option. | The full team offers a new solution rather than an unnecessary duplicate. |
| Control method | Your current controller makes the game’s inputs reliable. | You can repeat the actions in Training Mode; specialized hardware remains optional. |
The most defensible first choice is therefore personal and testable: begin with a hero you want to learn, use the Ease of Use stars to avoid an unnecessary execution wall, pair close and long range when you need a simple structure, and order the four slots around the two-character opening. Build outward only after assists, switches and the match’s unlock events make sense to you.
