Mask Maker is a 2021 virtual-reality adventure game, not a general guide to making masks. Players explore worlds connected by portals, craft magical masks, and use them to take on different identities. Its title also points to real mask-making traditions, but those vary widely by community and purpose.
What is Mask Maker?
Mask Maker is a VR game built around crafting masks and using them to travel between worlds. Its premise makes masks more than cosmetic equipment: each mask is connected to an identity and a way of moving through the game’s world. The title can also describe a craft or an artwork, so the game context matters when interpreting the name.
How are masks made outside the game?
There is no single mask-making method. Materials and techniques depend on the maker, intended use, and cultural setting. Two museum accounts illustrate the difference between a personal papier-mâché workshop project and a mask made within a specific community practice.
Papier-mâché workshop masks
A Smithsonian workshop profile describes participants working with Mongolian artisan Gankhuyag Natsag. In a two-hour session, attendees made a mold and began a papier-mâché mask; the session was not presented as enough time to finish one. This is one accessible craft approach, not a model for every kind of mask.

Mayo pascola masks carved from wood
The Arizona State Museum describes Mayo pascola masks as carved from wood, with cottonwood root preferred and other regional woods also used. The museum lists tools such as pocket knives, machetes, chisels, carpenter’s tools, and simple sandpaper. These details describe that regional craft, not a general equipment list for beginners.
For this specific mask-making account, the museum estimates that making a pascola mask can take one to two days. The time varies with material availability, the maker’s skill, decoration complexity, and how much time the maker can devote.

What do Yoreme pascola masks signify?
The National Museum of the American Indian describes Yoreme pajko’ora masks as being used on village feast days, Palm Saturday, and Holy Saturday. In its account, black paint represents pala ania (universe) or ka nuklak (infinity); stars, planets, plants, or animals may appear against the black background. These meanings belong to the tradition described by the museum and should not be generalized to masks from other communities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the game’s title be understood?
The game uses mask-making as a fantasy premise, while real masks can be objects of craft, performance, and community practice. A papier-mâché activity, a carved Mayo pascola mask, and a Yoreme ceremonial mask are not interchangeable examples. The useful connection is that masks can shape identity and meaning; the specific meaning depends on the context, not just the object’s appearance.
