Amazon MGM Studios’ Mass Effect TV series is officially in development, and BioWare’s latest public update says its writers’ room is active. Executive producer Mike Gamble says the show will tell a new story set after the original trilogy—not retell Commander Shepard’s story. No release date, cast, or filming schedule has been announced in the sources available.
What BioWare has confirmed about the series
In a November 7, 2025 N7 Day post, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble said BioWare and Amazon had been partnering closely, the writers’ room was active, and the team had worked out much of how the series fits into the franchise canon and relates to the next game. Gamble described it as a “brand-new story” set after the original trilogy and said it would not retell Shepard’s story. Read BioWare’s N7 Day 2025 update.

Gamble’s description is the clearest public statement about the show’s premise. It establishes a broad place in the timeline, but does not identify characters, a specific plot, or how the series will connect to individual game endings.
How the project got here
- November 8, 2024: Variety reported that the series was officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The report said Daniel Casey would write and executive produce, with Karim Zreik, Ari Arad, and EA’s Michael Gamble also serving as executive producers. Those are the credits reported at announcement; they do not confirm whether staffing has changed since then. Variety’s development report.
- January 29, 2025: BioWare said a core team was developing the next Mass Effect game under veterans of the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, and Parrish Ley. - November 7, 2025: Gamble provided the public update on Amazon’s collaboration with BioWare, the active writers’ room, and the show’s post-trilogy premise.
What has not been announced
The available announcements do not establish a cast, director, filming start, episode count, release date or window, or a confirmed streaming premiere. Amazon MGM Studios’ involvement does not, by itself, confirm where viewers will be able to watch the finished series. Gamble’s 2025 update adds development status and story placement, but no production timetable.

Do you need to play the games first?
No viewing requirement or tie-in has been announced. The series is planned as a new story after the original trilogy, but its precise relationship to the games’ characters and events is not yet detailed. Readers who want to explore the setting can find the games through EA’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition page; it is an existing game collection, not a required companion to the TV series.
