What the three camera views do
| Perspective | What you see | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| First person | The world from your character’s eyes, with your hand and held item visible. | Mining, combat, precise building, survival gameplay, and immersion. |
| Third-person rear | The camera sits behind your character and looks in the same general direction. | Checking what is behind you, navigating ledges, viewing your skin, and recording gameplay. |
| Third-person front | The camera faces your character from in front. | Selfies, screenshots, checking armor or cosmetics, and moving backward while watching your avatar. |
The three-perspective cycle is also described in Minecraft’s keyboard and mouse controls guidance.
F5 is not working: troubleshooting steps
1. Try Fn + F5
Many laptop and compact keyboards assign brightness, volume, or other hardware controls to the function row. Try:

Fn + F5
If that works, your keyboard is treating F5 as a hardware key unless you hold Fn. Some computer setups document this as Function + F5.
2. Click the Minecraft window
Click inside the game before pressing F5. If another application, overlay, or remote-desktop window has focus, Minecraft may not receive the key press.
3. Check the keyboard’s function-key mode
If F5 changes fullscreen or performs another hardware action, check your laptop manufacturer’s function-key setting or keyboard utility. You can also try an external keyboard to determine whether the issue is hardware-specific.

4. Use Bedrock’s Video settings
For Bedrock, open Settings → Video and select the camera perspective manually. The exact label may differ slightly between versions.
5. Check for a forced camera
A Bedrock map, add-on, command block, or server experience can control the camera. Microsoft explains that an active camera preset can override the normal perspective setting, so pressing F5 may not restore the usual view.
If you have permission to use commands, clear the active camera with:

Most players do not need commands to switch between normal perspectives. The /camera command is a Bedrock feature intended mainly for mapmakers, command users, cutscenes, and creator experiences. It requires cheats or the appropriate command permissions.

/camera @s set minecraft:first_person
/camera @s set minecraft:third_person
/camera @s set minecraft:third_person_front
/camera @s clear
The first three commands force first person, third-person rear, or third-person front. The final command removes the forced camera and returns the player to the normal perspective controls.
Bedrock also supports creator-oriented presets such as minecraft:free, minecraft:follow_orbit, and minecraft:fixed_boom. These are not ordinary replacements for F5. A free camera placed far from the player may show incomplete terrain or entities if the relevant chunks are not loaded. A camera can also appear inside blocks differently from the normal third-person camera.
Camera-command state does not normally persist between game sessions by itself. A creator’s world logic must reapply a custom camera when a player rejoins.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Perspective is not the same as field of view
Changing from first person to third person changes the camera position around your character. It does not automatically change your field of view, zoom level, render distance, or movement. Bedrock’s camera system treats field-of-view controls separately from perspective controls.
Java, Bedrock, and other platforms
The instructions here apply to keyboard-and-mouse play on a Windows or Mac computer. Java and Bedrock both document F5 as the normal PC perspective key, but their menus and camera-command systems are not identical. The advanced /camera commands described above are Bedrock commands, not a Java equivalent of the standard F5 shortcut.
Console and mobile versions use different control schemes, so their camera buttons may not match the PC instructions.
