SeroXen is a Windows remote-access trojan (RAT) assembled from Quasar RAT, the r77 rootkit and NirCmd. It was reported in May 2023 as being sold as a supposedly legitimate remote-access tool while being promoted in criminal forums as malware. Its early campaigns relied heavily on gaming-related lures, Discord distribution and deceptive ZIP archives.

The phrase “increasingly used” describes activity observed during the 2023 reporting period—not verified activity in 2026. SeroXen is also not “undetectable”: its obfuscation and concealment techniques can evade some security tools, but they may still leave memory, Registry, scheduled-task, PowerShell and network evidence.

What is SeroXen?

SeroXen is a malicious Windows RAT. Once executed, a RAT can give an attacker remote control over a computer without the owner’s permission, including access to files, processes, commands and potentially sensitive accounts.

AT&T Alien Labs reported SeroXen on May 30, 2023, after observing samples dating back to approximately September 2022. The research described hundreds of samples and identified gamers as the main victim group during the observed activity. That sample count refers to malware samples, not confirmed victims.

#1 Best Overall

SeroXen should not be treated as identical to Quasar RAT. Quasar is an open-source remote-administration project; SeroXen is a malicious assembly or variant that uses Quasar as one of its foundations.

The legitimate tools inside the malware

SeroXen’s danger comes from combining useful software components with obfuscation and unauthorized control:

  • Quasar RAT: provides capabilities associated with remote shells, remote desktops, file management, reverse proxying, process monitoring, registry access, keylogging and encrypted communications.
  • r77-rootkit: supplies process-hooking, in-memory injection and concealment capabilities. The reporting describes a ring-3 or user-mode rootkit; it should not automatically be described as a kernel rootkit.
  • NirCmd: a legitimate Windows command-line utility that can perform system and peripheral-management actions. Its presence does not prove an infection by itself.

A legitimate remote-support application is installed with the owner’s knowledge and controlled through an authorized account. A RAT operates covertly and gives an attacker access the victim did not grant. Marketing malware as a “legitimate” remote tool can make it appear less suspicious to buyers and potential victims.

Why gamers were targeted

The 2023 reporting did not suggest that gaming software itself was inherently vulnerable. Gaming communities were attractive because they offer convincing social-engineering opportunities:

  • Players often search for unofficial cheats, cracks, mods, injectors, launchers and performance tools.
  • Discord servers allow links and files to spread quickly through trusted-looking communities.
  • Malware can be named after popular games or presented as a required utility, launcher or verification tool.
  • Gaming PCs may contain valuable browser sessions, payment details, cryptocurrency wallets, private messages, Discord tokens and game accounts.
  • Some users disable antivirus protection or create exclusions so unofficial tools will run.

An advisory from Eventus Security listed lures associated with Fortnite, Valorant, Roblox and Warzone 2. Those names belong to the reported advisory and should not be treated as a universal list of SeroXen campaigns.

How SeroXen was delivered

Reported delivery methods included phishing emails, Discord channels and game-related downloads. A common pattern involved a ZIP archive containing an heavily obfuscated batch file. Later 2023 reporting also linked SeroXen to malicious or typosquatted NuGet packages, showing that distribution was not confined to ordinary gamers.

A ZIP file, batch file or Discord attachment is not automatically malicious. The risk rises when an unexpected file is disguised as a cheat or update, asks you to bypass security controls, uses heavy obfuscation or comes from a Discord-only source with no verifiable publisher.

What happened after execution?

The precise chain varied by sample, but the reported analysis described this general sequence:

  1. The victim opened a malicious archive or ran a gaming-themed lure.
  2. An obfuscated batch file extracted binaries from encoded data.
  3. Components were loaded into memory, including through .NET reflection, reducing the need to leave obvious payload files on disk.
  4. A modified msconfig.exe was temporarily used during execution in the analyzed sample.
  5. An InstallStager.exe component deployed a variant of the r77 rootkit.
  6. The rootkit was stored in obfuscated form in the Windows Registry.
  7. PowerShell and Task Scheduler helped activate the component.
  8. The malware injected code into a Windows process; the analysis reported winlogon.exe as one target.
  9. The RAT connected to command-and-control infrastructure and waited for attacker instructions.

These filenames, process targets and persistence details are indicators from particular analyses, not a guaranteed checklist for every SeroXen sample. Malware authors can change them.

What can an attacker do?

Because SeroXen uses Quasar RAT capabilities, a compromised computer may expose the attacker to:

  • Remote shell and command execution
  • Remote desktop access
  • File browsing, upload and download
  • Process, task and TCP-connection monitoring
  • Registry access
  • Keylogging
  • Installation of additional files or malware
  • Reverse-proxy access to other systems

That can lead to stolen browser cookies and saved credentials, hijacked game or Discord sessions, cryptocurrency-wallet theft, account fraud, surveillance, extortion or use of the computer as a foothold into other systems. These are possible consequences of the RAT’s capabilities; every sample will not necessarily implement every function, and a specific report should distinguish documented Quasar features from functions confirmed in that sample.

What “fileless” and “low detection” really mean

SeroXen was described as using techniques intended to minimize conventional disk artifacts:

  • Obfuscated batch-file content
  • In-memory loading
  • Registry storage of an obfuscated rootkit
  • Process injection
  • Rootkit-assisted concealment
  • Use of legitimate Windows utilities
  • Anti-analysis checks, including virtualization checks in one advisory
  • Encrypted or TLS-based command-and-control traffic

“Fileless” is shorthand, not a claim that the malware leaves no evidence. Memory, Registry keys, scheduled tasks, PowerShell logs, event logs, temporary files and network telemetry may all help investigators reconstruct an infection.

Likewise, “low detection” means that some samples reportedly evaded some static or dynamic-analysis detections at a particular time. It does not mean SeroXen bypasses every antivirus product. Detection changes as vendors add signatures, cloud analysis and behavior rules. Microsoft identifies Quasar-based malware and recommends cloud-delivered protection, automatic sample submission, tamper protection, attack-surface-reduction controls and least-privilege practices.

How to judge a suspicious gaming download

Stop and verify the source if a file:

  • Arrives unexpectedly through Discord, email or a private message
  • Claims to be a cheat, injector, crack or “FPS booster” from an unknown publisher
  • Uses a password-protected archive or heavily obfuscated script
  • Asks you to disable Defender, add an exclusion or run as administrator
  • Requires a fake “verification” step involving PowerShell or Command Prompt
  • Has no reputable publisher, digital signature or official download page

Do not assume that a game-related filename makes a program safe. Download only from sources you can independently verify, keep Windows Security enabled and use separate, unique passwords with multifactor authentication.

What to do if you ran a suspected file

  1. Stop using the computer for sensitive activity. Do not sign in to email, gaming, payment or cryptocurrency accounts from it.
  2. Disconnect it from the internet if active remote control or continuing compromise is suspected. If the computer belongs to an organization, contact the security team before altering evidence.
  3. Use a separate trusted device to change important passwords, revoke active sessions and tokens, enable multifactor authentication and check account activity.
  4. Run updated Microsoft Defender scans, including an offline scan where available.
  5. Use a reputable second opinion. Malwarebytes documents a scan, quarantine and reboot workflow for its Quasar detection.
  6. Escalate when rootkit or credential theft is plausible. A clean-looking normal scan is not proof of a clean system. Preserve evidence if needed and consider a clean Windows reinstall.
  7. Restore carefully. Restore personal documents from backups, but do not restore unknown executables, cheats, scripts, cracks or installers.

Simply deleting the original ZIP file or uninstalling a suspicious cheat does not necessarily remove persistence or undo stolen sessions.

Guidance for defenders

Defenders should combine endpoint, memory and network telemetry rather than rely only on disk scanning. The AT&T/LevelBlue report includes historical indicators and Suricata signatures that can serve as starting points after validation against the local environment.

Hunt for reported hashes, filenames, unusual PowerShell, suspicious scheduled tasks, Registry persistence, unexpected encoded scripts and process-injection behavior. Review browser sessions and authentication tokens as well as passwords. Segment affected hosts and rotate credentials from a clean administrative workstation.

A sample hash published by FFRI in July 2023 was 8ace121fae472cc7ce896c91a3f1743d5ccc8a389bc3152578c4782171c69e87. Historical indicators are sample-specific and should be supplemented with behavioral detections.

For organizations, Microsoft Defender XDR threat analytics can provide reports, recommended actions, exposure information and indicators for eligible customers. A host with suspected rootkit-level compromise should remain untrusted until it is forensically cleared or rebuilt.

What happened to SeroXen after the original gamer-focused reports?

Later 2023 reporting connected SeroXen to malicious NuGet packages, an important warning that the threat was not limited to game cheats or Discord communities. It does not, however, prove a continuing increase in activity through 2026. Current prevalence requires current telemetry.

Historical reports also differed on SeroXen’s criminal-market price: BleepingComputer and SEQRITE reported $15 per month or $60 for a lifetime license, while AT&T/LevelBlue reported $30 per month or $60 lifetime. These were inconsistent 2023 criminal-market claims, not legitimate product pricing or a recommendation to seek the software.

Bottom line

SeroXen was dangerous because it paired familiar gaming lures with powerful remote-control functionality and concealment techniques. Treat it as a serious Windows compromise—not as an ordinary remote-support application. If a suspicious file executed, protect accounts from a clean device, investigate beyond a routine scan and consider rebuilding the machine when rootkit persistence or credential theft cannot be ruled out.
