Turn on voice chat, choose Party Chat or Game Chat, select Push-to-Talk if your platform exposes it, and then confirm the speaking control shown by your current setup.
There is no single officially documented Push-to-Talk button that works universally on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and controller-on-PC setups. A controller mute button, headset mute switch, keyboard key, or platform-specific control may behave differently from Fortnite’s Push-to-Talk function.

Quick setup
- Launch Fortnite and enter the lobby or a match.
- Open the menu: press Options on PlayStation, Menu on Xbox, + on Nintendo Switch, or Esc on PC/Mac.
- Select the gear icon, open Settings, and choose the Audio tab.
- Turn Voice Chat on.
- Set the communication audience to Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everybody. Voice chat cannot work when the relevant setting is Nobody, and parental or age restrictions can limit these choices. Epic’s voice-chat troubleshooting guide explains the current restrictions.
- Find Voice Chat Method, Voice Method, or the equivalent current label, then select Push-to-Talk if it is available.
- Apply or save the change if Fortnite displays an Apply button.
- Open the Social/sidebar interface and confirm that you are not muted or deafened and that the intended chat channel is selected. Epic’s party and chat instructions cover these controls.
Fortnite’s labels and available options can change by platform, game mode, and software version. If you do not see a Push-to-Talk action in the controller controls, do not assume that a standard button such as a D-pad direction or stick press is universal.

| Mode | How it behaves |
|---|---|
| Open Mic | Fortnite continuously sends microphone input while voice chat is active. |
| Push-to-Talk | Your microphone is transmitted only while the assigned speaking control is held. |
| Muted or Off | Your voice is not transmitted. |
| Hardware mute | A headset switch, controller mute button, or platform mute can block the microphone regardless of Fortnite’s voice method. |
Push-to-Talk is useful in a noisy room because it prevents controller clicks, keyboard sounds, fans, television audio, and nearby conversations from reaching teammates. The trade-off is that you must remember to hold the control while speaking, which can be awkward during building, aiming, or item management.

Finding the actual speaking control
Open the controller or input-mapping tab. On controller-based setups, select the gamepad icon and inspect the available actions. If Fortnite permits it, switch to the Custom preset and look for a voice-chat or Push-to-Talk action. Fortnite’s documented controller presets include Old School, Quick Builder, Combat Pro, Builder Pro, and Custom; the official controller-mapping guidance does not establish one universal console Push-to-Talk binding.
Check the on-screen prompt in your current build and mode. If no Push-to-Talk action appears, the available control may be:
- a keyboard key when playing Fortnite on PC;
- a headset’s dedicated chat or mute control;
- a controller accessory function;
- a platform-specific interface control; or
- unavailable as an assignable controller action on that setup.
On PC, using a controller for gameplay does not require the microphone to come from that controller. Fortnite may use a separate USB, wireless, or headset microphone, and Push-to-Talk may be assigned to a keyboard key. Also check for duplicate bindings if a voice or communications command triggers another controller action. Epic documents duplicate-binding troubleshooting here.
Platform-specific checks
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
For a headset connected to the controller, verify that its boom and inline controls are not muted. USB headsets and other selected input devices may also be used. On PlayStation, review microphone input and level controls under Settings > Sound > Microphone; Sony’s voice-chat support page describes these controls.
On PS5, press the PS button, open Sound, and check Mute Game Voice Chat. Disable it if it is enabled. A DualSense microphone mute button is not automatically Fortnite Push-to-Talk: it generally mutes or unmutes the microphone rather than transmitting only while held.

Also distinguish PlayStation Party Chat from Fortnite’s own Party Chat or Game Chat. If the console party is taking over voice communication, switch to Fortnite’s channel before testing.
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
Check the microphone on a wired headset connected to the controller, wireless headset, or other Xbox-compatible chat device. Xbox Party Chat can prevent Fortnite’s in-game voice chat from working, even when the party appears empty.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To switch channels using Epic’s documented Xbox path, press the Xbox button, open Parties & chats, select the active party, press the View button, and choose Switch to game chat. You may instead need to leave the Xbox party completely, then select Fortnite Party Chat or Game Chat through Fortnite’s Social/sidebar controls.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Use a headset with a working microphone and check any boom or inline mute switch. If Fortnite voice chat fails while the Switch is docked with a 3.5 mm headset, Epic recommends trying a USB headset, USB receiver, or USB-to-3.5 mm adapter. Nintendo’s Switch-family microphone troubleshooting can help with hardware issues, while Fortnite’s in-game settings remain controlled by Epic.
A headset’s inline mute button is not necessarily Fortnite Push-to-Talk. It may simply toggle the microphone. Confirm what the current Fortnite prompt and headset documentation indicate.

PC with a controller
Windows can select a different microphone from the one you expect. Set the intended device as the default recording device and verify Fortnite’s input selection. In Windows 11, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and allow Fortnite or the relevant desktop app access to the microphone. Epic’s PC troubleshooting guidance also covers default playback and recording devices.
The controller-mapping and Audio tabs do different jobs. You can play with a gamepad while holding a keyboard key for Push-to-Talk, provided the PC version exposes that binding.
Party Chat versus Game Chat
| Chat type | Who hears you | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Party Chat | Members of your Fortnite party. | Friends who queued together. |
| Game Chat | Players on your team, match, or supported island instance. | Fill squads and cross-platform team communication. |
Select the channel intentionally from Fortnite’s Social/sidebar interface. Being in a PlayStation or Xbox console party can prevent Fortnite’s channel from carrying your voice. This is why Push-to-Talk can appear correctly configured while teammates still hear nothing.
Test Push-to-Talk before a serious match
- Connect the headset or microphone.
- Check the physical mute switch, headset boom, controller mute button, and platform audio panel.
- In Fortnite’s Audio settings, choose a permitted voice-chat audience and select Party Chat or Game Chat deliberately.
- Set the voice method to Push-to-Talk.
- Enter a low-stakes party or team environment.
- Hold the displayed Push-to-Talk control while speaking and ask whether your voice indicator appears and your teammate can hear you.
- Release the control and confirm that the indicator stops.
- Temporarily switch to Open Mic and test again.
If Open Mic also fails, the problem is not just the Push-to-Talk binding. Continue with device, platform-chat, permission, account, and server checks.
Push-to-Talk is enabled, but nobody hears me
- Check the channel. Switch between Fortnite Party Chat and Game Chat in the Social/sidebar controls.
- Leave console Party Chat. On Xbox, use Switch to game chat; on PlayStation, leave or switch away from the console party.
- Check every mute. Inspect the headset, inline switch, controller button, and console audio panel.
- Confirm the input device. On PC, select the intended Windows recording device and verify Fortnite is using it.
- Check the audience. Do not use Nobody; parental controls and age settings can restrict the available options.
- Check account restrictions. Epic says cabined accounts cannot use voice or text chat until the required parental-consent process is completed. Review Epic’s parental-control information.
- Check platform permissions. On Windows, allow microphone access. On PlayStation, review Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Check docked Switch audio. Try USB audio hardware or a USB-to-3.5 mm adapter if a docked analog headset is unreliable.
- Check mode availability. Some voice options depend on the selected Fortnite mode or island.
- Check service status. Consult Epic’s current support information and Fortnite Community Issues board before changing router settings.
Advanced network troubleshooting
Network changes belong at the end of the checklist, not the beginning. Epic’s troubleshooting material discusses XMPP voice-chat connectivity and references ports 5222 and 433, but router configuration varies. Do not treat port forwarding as a universal fix; follow Epic’s current instructions only after mute, channel, device, permission, account, and service-status checks.

Choosing the best voice method
Use Push-to-Talk when your room is noisy, you play in public Game Chat, or you want to prevent private conversations from being transmitted. Use Open Mic when the room is quiet and holding an extra control would interfere with play. Keep Fortnite’s voice volume audible; Epic recommends at least 50% while troubleshooting inaudible chat.
Party Chat is usually the better privacy choice for a fixed group of friends. Game Chat is more useful for fill squads and cross-platform teammates, but it makes careful microphone control more important.
Voice reporting and privacy
Push-to-Talk controls when your microphone transmits to other players; it is not a guarantee that voice reporting or moderation features are disabled. Fortnite’s voice-reporting system can capture voice-chat audio on the player’s device, subject to Epic’s settings and policies. Review the current Fortnite Voice and Text Reporting FAQs for the available privacy and reporting controls.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Push-to-Talk with a controller?
Sometimes. Availability and the binding depend on the platform, controller configuration, game mode, and current Fortnite build. If no controller action is listed, use the displayed alternative—such as a keyboard key or headset control—rather than guessing a button.
What button is Push-to-Talk on PlayStation or Xbox?
Epic’s current documentation does not establish one universal button for either console. Inspect Fortnite’s current input prompt and distinguish it from the controller’s hardware mute button.

Does Fortnite Push-to-Talk work on Switch?
Voice chat can depend on the headset, docked configuration, account restrictions, and available controls. A docked 3.5 mm headset may need to be replaced or connected through USB hardware.
Why does Push-to-Talk work on PC but not console?
PC can expose keyboard bindings and separate Windows microphone selection, while console controller bindings and platform chat routing differ. A working PC binding does not prove that the same controller action exists on console.
Why can I hear teammates but not speak?
Check the microphone mute state, selected input device, Push-to-Talk control, audience setting, account restrictions, and whether the console is still routing you through Party Chat.

Why can teammates hear me in console Party Chat but not Fortnite?
The microphone works, but Fortnite may be using a different channel. Leave or switch away from the console party and select Fortnite Party Chat or Game Chat.
Does the PS5 controller mute button count as Push-to-Talk?
No—not automatically. It normally toggles microphone muting. Fortnite Push-to-Talk transmits only while its assigned control is held.
Can a headset’s inline button be used?
It may mute or unmute the headset, but it is not automatically a Fortnite Push-to-Talk control. Test its behavior separately from Fortnite’s voice-method setting.
Does Push-to-Talk work in every Fortnite mode?
Not necessarily. Voice options can vary by mode or island, and some experiences may disable or configure voice communication differently.
