Yes, many Epic Games Store titles can be installed and played without keeping the official Epic Games Launcher installed—but not every game can be detached from Epic or its other online services. For most people, Heroic Games Launcher is the easiest replacement. Technical users can use Legendary, while Linux users with unusual Wine requirements may prefer Lutris. Steam can provide a convenient shortcut, but it does not convert an Epic game into a Steam game or remove publisher launchers, DRM, authentication, or anti-cheat requirements.
The important distinction is whether you want to replace Epic Games Launcher, skip a publisher launcher, or simply play offline. Those are different solutions.

What “without the Epic Games Launcher” really means
Epic games do not all use the same launch process. A title may be able to run from its executable, or it may depend on Epic Online Services, a publisher account, DRM, a separate launcher, anti-cheat, or launch parameters supplied by Epic.
There are four separate scenarios:
- Replace Epic Games Launcher: Use Heroic or Legendary to authenticate with Epic, download games, update them, and launch them.
- Use a compatibility manager: Use Lutris or a Wine/Proton setup, particularly on Linux.
- Skip a publisher launcher: Use Epic’s
-skip_launcheroption where supported. This still requires Epic Games Launcher. - Play offline: Prepare offline access in advance. This does not necessarily eliminate the need for a launcher during installation or first authentication.
So the practical answer is “often, with conditions”—not “run every Epic game by double-clicking its EXE.”

Which method should you choose?
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heroic | Most users, Linux, macOS, and Steam Deck | Graphical interface, Epic library integration, installation, updates, compatibility tools, Steam shortcuts | Game-specific launchers, DRM, anti-cheat, and online services may still be required |
| Legendary | Technical users and scripts | Lightweight command-line control, importing, verification, cloud saves, offline launch | No conventional graphical interface; app names and configuration require care |
| Lutris | Advanced Linux/Wine setups | Custom prefixes, runners, environment variables, and installer scripts | More configuration and more ways to misconfigure a game |
| Steam shortcut | Steam Deck and controller-focused setups | One convenient library and Gaming Mode access | Does not remove Epic, publisher, DRM, or anti-cheat dependencies |
-skip_launcher |
Skipping Ubisoft Connect, EA App, 2K Launcher, or similar software | Officially documented for some publisher launchers | Epic Games Launcher remains necessary |
Heroic: the easiest Epic launcher replacement
Heroic Games Launcher is a free, open-source application for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck. It connects to Epic using the open-source Legendary backend and can also manage GOG and Amazon libraries.
Heroic states that its Epic integration keeps an authentication token after sign-in rather than storing your Epic password for store access. That is a description of the project’s stated design, not an independent security audit. Download Heroic from its official website or its official repository, rather than an unofficial mirror.
Install and launch an Epic game with Heroic
- Install Heroic from the official project source.
- Open Heroic and sign in through Epic’s authentication flow.
- Open your Epic library and select the game.
- Choose an installation directory and install the title.
- Launch it from Heroic after installation completes.
- Optionally create a desktop shortcut or use Heroic’s option to add the game to Steam.
If your library is empty, sign out and authenticate again, confirm that you used the account that owns the game, refresh the library, and check whether the title is available for your operating system.

Heroic can manage Wine, Proton, DXVK, VKD3D, and related compatibility tools. Install the game, select a suitable Wine or Proton version, and test it before building a more elaborate shortcut.
On Steam Deck, the usual workflow is:
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Install Heroic using an available package method, such as Flatpak or an official project package.
- Sign in to Epic and install the game.
- Choose a Wine or Proton version and test the game in Desktop Mode.
- Use Heroic’s Add Shortcut to Steam option, or its current equivalent.
- Return to Gaming Mode and launch the added entry from Steam.
A Steam shortcut is only a shortcut. The game remains an Epic installation, and it may still need Epic authentication, Epic Online Services, a publisher launcher, a particular Proton prefix, or anti-cheat support. A game that installs successfully may still fail to run online.
Heroic on macOS
Heroic itself supports macOS, but that does not mean every Windows Epic title will run on a Mac. Native macOS builds are a separate case. Windows games may require Wine or a commercial compatibility layer such as CrossOver, and compatibility remains specific to the game, macOS version, hardware, graphics API, DRM, and online services.

Legendary: the command-line alternative
Legendary is an independent, open-source command-line client for Epic Games Store libraries. Its documented features include authentication, installation, updates, launching, importing existing installations, verification, cloud-save synchronization, Wine-based launching, and offline launch options.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the project’s current installation instructions for your operating system. Its documentation lists support for Linux, Windows, and macOS; the Python installation route has stated operating-system and Python requirements, while Windows users can use a standalone executable without installing Python separately. On Windows PowerShell, invoke that executable with .legendary.exe only if that is the actual filename and location; commonly the command is:
.legendary.exe auth
In a normal terminal, the basic sequence is:
legendary auth
legendary list
legendary install "APP_NAME"
legendary launch "APP_NAME"
Run legendary list first. The visible store title is not always the exact application name Legendary expects, although newer versions attempt to match names and abbreviations.
Offline launch and dry runs
Legendary documents these commands:
legendary launch "APP_NAME" --offline
legendary launch "APP_NAME" --offline --dry-run
--offline skips online authentication for the launch attempt. --dry-run prints the command line Legendary would use, which can help when configuring Lutris or a Steam shortcut. This is not a guarantee that the game itself works offline: multiplayer, DRM, publisher launchers, Epic Online Services, and first-run activation can still block it.
Import an existing installation
You do not necessarily have to download a game again:
legendary import "APP_NAME" "/path/to/installed/game"
legendary verify "APP_NAME"
legendary list-installed --check-updates
Importing requires a full verification so the client can identify the files and update the game correctly. Do not delete the Epic-managed installation, manifests, or local saves until the import has completed, verification succeeds, and the game launches through the replacement client. Legendary’s release notes also document migration-related functionality, including recent --migrate support.

- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Legendary also documents cloud-save synchronization:
legendary sync-saves
Test cloud synchronization while online and back up local saves before migrating. Save locations and behavior can vary by game, so do not assume every title is detected or synchronized perfectly.
Lutris for complex Linux and Wine configurations
Lutris is better understood as a general game manager and compatibility tool than as a simple Epic replacement. It is useful when a title needs a custom Wine prefix, a particular runner, environment variables, a manually selected executable, or a community installation script.
Choose Lutris when Heroic cannot launch a particular game, when you already manage several Windows games outside Steam, or when you need detailed control over the Wine environment. Lutris documents local installer scripts, command-line installation, and generated launch scripts in its installer documentation and project documentation.
The trade-off is complexity. Incorrect prefixes, runners, executable paths, working directories, and environment variables can all produce a failure that looks like a game problem.
Adding an Epic game to Steam
Steam is primarily a presentation layer in this setup. Install and test the game through Heroic, Legendary, or Lutris first, then add its working shortcut to Steam. On Linux or Steam Deck, configure the correct executable, working directory, and compatibility tool if needed.

Do not expect the shortcut to provide Steam ownership, Steam Cloud, Steam achievements, or automatic compatibility. Steam’s own offline-mode guidance warns that games requiring an external launcher may not work in Steam Offline Mode.
If the shortcut does nothing, return to the alternative launcher’s normal launch function. A working launch establishes the correct executable, prefix, arguments, and environment before you attempt to reproduce it in Steam.
Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, and macOS differences
Windows
Windows users can install Heroic or use Legendary’s standalone executable. Native Windows games are generally simpler to configure than Windows games running through Wine, but publisher launchers, DRM, Epic Online Services, and anti-cheat can still be required.
Linux
Linux adds Wine or Proton versions, prefixes, graphics translation layers, drivers, codecs, and anti-cheat compatibility to the normal Epic requirements. A title can install but fail to launch, run offline but not online, or work only with a particular runner.
Steam Deck
Use Desktop Mode for installation and initial testing, then add a verified title to Steam for Gaming Mode. If a game crashes, shows a black screen, has missing audio or video, or fails to create a prefix, try another compatible Wine or Proton version. The newest version is not automatically the best one for every game.

macOS
Heroic and Legendary support macOS, but Windows-game compatibility is separate from launcher compatibility. Native Mac builds, Wine-based execution, and CrossOver-based execution have different requirements. Check the individual game rather than assuming Heroic support guarantees playability.

Skipping a publisher launcher with -skip_launcher
If the real annoyance is Ubisoft Connect, the EA App, Rockstar Games Launcher, or another publisher client—not Epic Games Launcher itself—Epic documents an additional command-line option for some games.
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select your profile icon and open Settings.
- Expand the affected game.
- Enable Additional Command Line.
- Enter
-skip_launcher. - Return to your library or store and launch the game.
Epic says this generally works only with publishers whose games use their own launcher. It does not replace Epic Games Launcher, remove DRM, bypass ownership checks, or guarantee multiplayer. See Epic’s official instructions for the current interface.
Offline play: a different solution
Epic’s offline mode is intended for supported single-player games, not as a universal launcher bypass. Epic says offline mode must be enabled while connected, and online multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, updates, and other network services may be unavailable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- While online, open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open your profile icon and choose Settings.
- Under Preferences, enable the offline-mode browsing preference. The exact wording can vary between current and localized support pages.
- Launch the game at least once while online and complete any required activation or setup.
- Disconnect and test offline access before relying on it during travel.
For the official limitations and current settings path, consult Epic’s offline-mode support page. Legendary’s --offline option is a separate client-side launch feature and cannot override a game’s own authentication or DRM.
Legal and account considerations
Heroic and Legendary authenticate against Epic services; they do not grant games you do not own. Use them with games legitimately associated with your Epic account. They should not be presented as tools for defeating DRM, bypassing paid ownership, or disabling anti-cheat.
Epic’s store EULA describes a license to use software rather than unrestricted ownership of a permanent copy, and it notes that software can become unavailable for download or access in some circumstances. Do not infer a blanket Epic policy toward every third-party client unless Epic has explicitly stated one for the specific case.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Library is empty | Wrong Epic account, failed token exchange, ownership, platform availability, or a temporary integration problem | Sign out, authenticate again, verify the account, refresh, and update to the project’s current stable release |
| Authentication loops | Browser sign-in completed without a successful client token exchange | Repeat the sign-in flow, close duplicate login windows, and check the project’s issue tracker before deleting configuration data |
| Existing installation is not detected | Wrong path, missing manifest, incomplete migration, or files that need verification | Use Legendary import or the launcher’s import option; keep the original installation until verification succeeds |
| Game opens and closes | Wrong executable, missing launch arguments, incorrect prefix, DRM, EOS, publisher launcher, or anti-cheat | Launch normally through Heroic, Legendary, or Lutris first; on advanced setups try the documented --override-exe, --wine, --wine-prefix, or --dry-run controls |
| Black screen or missing video/audio | Wine/Proton version, DXVK/VKD3D, codecs, drivers, or prefix configuration | Try another compatibility version and confirm the required graphics drivers and dependencies |
| “Launcher missing” error | The game expects a publisher client or launcher-generated authentication | Install or configure the required publisher service, or use the official Epic launch path if the game requires it |
| Multiplayer fails | EOS, publisher account, anti-cheat, platform-specific components, or server entitlement | Check current game-specific compatibility and publisher documentation; single-player success proves nothing about online play |
| Cloud saves are missing | Cloud synchronization disabled, unsupported save location, conflicting local saves, or offline changes | Go online, back up local saves, test synchronization, and use legendary sync-saves where appropriate |
| Steam shortcut does nothing | Wrong executable, working directory, prefix, arguments, or external launcher requirement | Confirm a successful launch in the original alternative client, then recreate the Steam shortcut with the same settings |
Migration checklist
Before uninstalling Epic Games Launcher:
- Confirm the replacement client sees the correct Epic account and game.
- Import or link the existing installation rather than merely pointing a shortcut at its folder.
- Allow the full verification to finish.
- Launch the game successfully through the replacement client.
- Back up saves, configuration files, and any mod files.
- Test cloud saves and offline behavior while still online and able to recover.
- Only then remove the Epic launcher or its managed files.
A desktop shortcut alone is not a migration. Removing Epic first can leave the game without its manifests, launch parameters, authentication setup, or managed installation metadata.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe bottom line
For most readers, install Heroic Games Launcher, sign in with the Epic account that owns the game, install or import the title, and launch it there. Use Legendary when you want scripts, low-level control, offline flags, or command-line migration. Use Lutris for complicated Linux and Wine configurations, and add a verified installation to Steam only for convenience.
If you only want to avoid a publisher’s secondary launcher, use Epic’s documented -skip_launcher option—but understand that Epic Games Launcher remains part of the process. No method guarantees that every Epic title will work without Epic authentication, DRM, anti-cheat, or another publisher service.
