In Minecraft, you can find terracotta in the world or make it by smelting clay. Keep it plain for a muted building surface, dye it for a chosen color, or smelt colored terracotta with fuel to make glazed terracotta’s bold patterns. Plan the color before dyeing: the color cannot be removed afterward.
How to get terracotta
Terracotta has two main routes: mine naturally generated blocks or make it from clay. The official Minecraft guide also mentions terracotta in some village houses and stone mason trades, but that article dates to 2019, so treat those details as version-dependent rather than guaranteed in every current world.

Mine naturally generated terracotta
Badlands are a rich natural source, according to Mojang’s terracotta guide. Its 2019 article also lists villager houses in plains, savanna, and desert biomes as places to find uncolored terracotta. Village generation can vary by edition and version, so check your world rather than relying on a specific house type.
Make it from clay
- Gather clay and place it in a furnace.
- Add fuel and smelt the clay into terracotta.
- Leave the blocks plain, dye them, or use colored blocks to make glazed terracotta.
Mojang identifies smelting clay as a way to produce terracotta. The source does not specify a furnace variant, smelting time, yield beyond the resulting terracotta, or fuel efficiency, so those details are not assumed here.

How to choose and dye terracotta
Terracotta comes in an undyed form and 16 dyed colors, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s terracotta entry. Dyeing turns plain terracotta into a colored block; the reference says the color cannot later be removed. Choose your palette before coloring a large batch, and keep some blocks plain if you want a subdued surface.
The color variants are useful for setting a build’s overall palette, while the distinction between regular and glazed terracotta is mainly visual. Mojang describes dyed terracotta as softer and more muted than glazed terracotta. For broad walls or large structures, regular terracotta can provide a quieter field of color; use glazed blocks where a more prominent tile-like pattern is welcome. That is a design choice, not a mechanical advantage.

How to make glazed terracotta
Glazed terracotta requires colored terracotta—not plain, undyed terracotta. As Mojang’s Nova Barlow puts it in the 2019 article, “grab some terracotta of any color (but not plain terracotta!), and then smelt it with any fuel you have on hand.”
- Get terracotta by mining it or smelting clay.
- If it is plain, dye it the color you want.
- Smelt the colored terracotta with fuel to make glazed terracotta.
The Minecraft Wiki lists glazed terracotta in the 16 dye colors. Its reference entry also describes selected piston, slime-block, and honey-block interactions; those movement properties are version-sensitive, so check the entry for your edition and version before designing a moving build around them: Minecraft Wiki: Glazed Terracotta.

Use color and pattern deliberately
Regular dyed terracotta gives you a relatively muted color field; glazed terracotta adds a stronger pattern. Mojang’s build guide recommends arranging glazed blocks in varied patterns. Before placing a large quantity, test a small patch in the intended orientation: the pattern’s direction can change how a wall or floor motif reads.

- For broad surfaces: consider regular terracotta when you want color without a dominant pattern.
- For accents and tiled areas: consider glazed terracotta when the pattern should be a focal point.
- For a coordinated palette: decide the colors first, then dye only the quantity you need; dyed blocks cannot be returned to plain terracotta.
