He thanked Phil Spencer and Satya Nadella, said he was looking forward to working with Sharma, and voiced confidence in the company’s studios and game pipeline. His line that there were no studio organizational changes underway described that moment—not a continuing promise.
Booty’s full memo
Microsoft published Booty’s message as part of its February 20, 2026 leadership announcement, under the heading “MATT BOOTY MESSAGE.” The text reads:
I read Phil’s note with much gratitude. He has been a steady champion for game creators and our studio teams, and I’ve learned so much from his leadership over the years. All our games have benefited from his foundational support. I’m also grateful to Satya for his ongoing commitment to gaming and holding a vision of how it can connect back to the larger company.
Looking forward, I’m excited to partner with Asha as our next CEO. Our first conversations centered on her commitment to making great games and the role that plays in our overall success. She asks questions, pushes for clarity, and wants our choices grounded in player and developer needs. That mindset matters as the industry around us is changing quickly: how players engage, how games are made, and how business models and platforms evolve.

The announcement said Sharma would become EVP and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to Satya Nadella. It also included messages from Nadella, Phil Spencer, and Sharma alongside Booty’s note.

Nadella said Spencer had decided the previous year to retire and that succession planning had been underway. Spencer said he would remain in an advisory role through the summer to support the handoff. These details place Booty’s message within a leadership transition, rather than presenting it as a separate studio strategy announcement.
His main points
- Thanks to outgoing leaders: Booty credited Spencer’s support for creators and studio teams and thanked Nadella for his commitment to gaming.
- Working with Sharma: He said their early conversations focused on making great games and grounding choices in player and developer needs.
- Confidence in the portfolio: He pointed to established franchises, new projects, and what he described as clear player demand.
- Support for existing teams: He said his focus was helping the teams and leaders then in place do their best work.
- No studio changes underway at the time: His precise statement was, “To be clear, there are no organizational changes underway for our studios.”
How to read the statement about studio changes
The memo’s wording is explicitly time-bound: Booty said no organizational changes were underway when the message was issued on February 20, 2026. It should not be read as a guarantee that Microsoft would avoid future changes.

That distinction matters in light of Booty’s later September 22, 2026 XBOX Wire update, “Continuing Our Reset.” In that update, he announced 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and central functions, and described studio reorganizations and divestiture updates. The September developments came later; they do not alter what Booty said about the situation in February.

In the same February announcement, Nadella said Microsoft reached “over 500 million monthly active users” in gaming. That is Microsoft’s stated figure, attributed to Nadella and the February 20, 2026 announcement; the cited announcement does not provide an independent measurement methodology.

The February role and wording are retained here to reflect the original announcement.
