It makes NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, and many Nintendo 64 games more comfortable and precise than touchscreen controls. Most players should start with a controller they already own, then add a phone-mounted controller, iPad stand, headphones, or charging accessory only when a specific problem justifies it.
Quick recommendations
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Portable iPhone setup | Backbone One, second generation | Turns a compatible iPhone into a handheld-style system. |
| You already own a controller | Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch controller | No additional Delta-specific hardware is required. |
| iPad gaming | Full-size Bluetooth controller plus an adjustable stand | More comfortable than mounting a large tablet in a telescopic controller. |
| Retro-focused play | D-pad-oriented Bluetooth controller | Well suited to NES, SNES, Game Boy, and GBA. |
| Nintendo 64 | N64-style controller or remappable full-size pad | Analog-stick feel and C-button placement matter more than branding. |
| Free improvement | Delta’s per-system remapping | Lets you tailor controls and assign Quick Save, Quick Load, or Fast Forward. |
Delta itself is free of controller subscriptions. For example, Backbone says its optional Backbone+ membership adds app features but is not required to use the physical controller with Delta. (Backbone)

What Delta officially supports
Delta supports controllers recognized by iOS and iPadOS. Its official list includes Xbox Wireless Controller models with Bluetooth, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Series S and Series X controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4, PlayStation DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, Nintendo Switch Online controllers, MFi controllers, and Bluetooth or wired keyboards. (Delta controller guide)
That does not mean every controller advertised as “mobile compatible” will work. The controller must support iOS or iPadOS, use an Apple-compatible pairing mode, and be recognized by the operating system. Firmware, pairing mode, and model-specific operating-system requirements can all affect compatibility.

The best Delta accessories by use case
Backbone One: best for a handheld-style iPhone setup
The second-generation Backbone One connects directly to compatible phones and is available in Lightning and USB-C versions. The USB-C model is marketed for newer iPhones, including iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17, as well as compatible Android devices. Choose the connector that matches your phone; USB-C is not automatically the right choice simply because it is newer.
Its main advantage is portability: the phone and controls become one compact unit. It is a strong fit for platformers, fighting games, racing games, and handheld systems where physical buttons make a substantial difference.
- Check the connector: Lightning iPhones need the Lightning version; USB-C iPhones need the USB-C version.
- Check case clearance: thick cases can prevent the phone from fitting or keep the connector from seating correctly.
- Check physical clearance: the camera bump and connector position must not interfere with the grips.
- Consider charging: verify pass-through charging and whether the phone’s port remains accessible.
The official US product result showed a $99.99 list-price signal, while other official results displayed sale prices such as $69.99 and $79.99. These prices were seen August 16, 2026; check the live listing for the exact edition, connector, availability, and current US price.
Backbone Pro: for premium mobile and multi-screen use
Backbone Pro is aimed at readers who want a more advanced controller that can move between mobile and other screens, including wireless use. It is harder to justify for occasional Delta sessions, particularly if you already own a supported Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch controller.
Official product results showed a price signal of $169.99, with the Xbox Edition listed at $179.99. Those figures were seen August 16, 2026 and should be rechecked. Delta does not require Backbone Pro, Backbone One, or Backbone+.

Your existing Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch controller: best value
If you already own supported hardware, try it before buying anything. Delta lists Xbox Wireless controllers with Bluetooth, Xbox Elite Series 2, DualShock 4, DualSense, Switch Pro controllers, Joy-Cons, and Nintendo Switch Online controllers as supported. (Delta’s supported-controller list)
This is usually the best arrangement for iPad play: place the iPad on a stand and use the controller separately. It is comfortable and costs nothing beyond the hardware you already have. The compromises are portability, the need for a stand or surface, and button labels that may not match the Nintendo system being emulated.
For Apple pairing instructions, see Apple’s controller support guide.
8BitDo Pro 3: a flexible full-size option
The 8BitDo Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad is a conventional controller suited to iPhone, iPad, and other Apple-device setups. 8BitDo lists profile functionality and interchangeable magnetic ABXY buttons, which can be useful when switching between Nintendo-style layouts and other preferences. Its Apple compatibility page identifies operating-system requirements by model, so verify the exact requirement for the controller you intend to buy. (8BitDo Apple compatibility)
It is a better fit for iPad than a phone-mounted controller and offers a more retro-friendly layout than some modern console pads. It is not the right choice if your priority is a one-piece handheld setup. No stable official US list price was established in the supplied information; check the live product page or official retail link before purchasing.

N64-focused controllers: choose by layout, not marketing
Nintendo 64 games expose the weaknesses of a generic controller more quickly than NES or Game Boy games. Look for a comfortable analog stick, accessible shoulder buttons, enough inputs for C-button functions, and a mapping that does not force awkward hand positions.

Possible choices include a Nintendo Switch Online N64 controller where available, a compatible retro-style controller from 8BitDo, or a standard Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch Pro controller with a carefully tuned Delta mapping. There is no universally best N64 controller without hands-on testing; analog-stick feel, Z-button placement, and long-session comfort are matters of preference.
Accessories beyond the controller
iPad stand
An adjustable stand is one of the most useful iPad accessories when using a separate controller. It improves viewing angle and posture, but it does not improve emulation performance. Choose a stable stand that supports your iPad’s size and case rather than a lightweight phone stand.
Headphones or earbuds
Headphones help in public spaces and prevent speaker fatigue during long sessions. Wired headphones generally provide the lowest-latency path where the device supports them. Bluetooth audio can introduce latency in some setups, but the effect depends on the device, headphones, connection conditions, and other accessories; do not assume every Bluetooth setup will feel delayed.
Charging cable or power bank
A charging cable or compact power bank is useful for long sessions, especially with a connected mobile controller. Confirm the controller’s charging and pass-through behavior before buying a power accessory. Delta does not require unusual power hardware.

- WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
Case and screen protection
A case and screen protector protect the device but are not Delta-specific upgrades. With a telescopic controller, a thick case can be a compatibility problem. Check the controller’s fit requirements before removing or replacing a case, and never force a connector into an offset or partially supported position.
Keyboard
Delta supports Bluetooth and wired keyboards. A keyboard can be practical with an iPad, for accessibility, or when a game benefits from many readily remappable inputs. It is generally less comfortable than a gamepad for most retro games.
Accessories you usually do not need
- USB wireless receiver: unnecessary when a controller pairs directly with iOS or iPadOS. Receivers add setup complexity and may not work with an iPhone or iPad. 8BitDo also documents limitations involving some Xbox Bluetooth controller firmware versions with its USB Wireless Adapter. (8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter)
- Capture card: not needed to play Delta.
- External cooling fan: do not buy one without device-specific evidence of a thermal problem.
- Paid controller subscription: Delta does not require one, and Backbone says Backbone+ is optional for using its controller.
How to connect a controller to Delta
Pair a Bluetooth controller
- Open the iPhone or iPad’s Settings app.
- Open Bluetooth.
- Put the controller into its Apple-compatible pairing mode.
- Select the controller under available devices.
- Open Delta.
- Go to Settings → Controllers → Player 1.
- Select the connected controller.
- Start a game and test every required button.
Pairing in Delta alone is not enough. The controller must first be connected through the device’s Bluetooth settings. (Delta’s official setup instructions)
Remap controls for each system
- Open Delta’s Settings.
- Under Controllers, select the controller.
- Tap Customize Controls.
- Select the Nintendo system you want to configure.
- Tap the virtual button or action to change.
- Press the physical controller input you want to assign.
- Tap Save.
Delta supports system-specific and controller-specific mappings. Create separate profiles when the same controller feels good for SNES but awkward for N64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssign special actions
Delta can assign external-controller inputs to Quick Save, Quick Load, and Fast Forward. Spare shoulder buttons, stick clicks, or back buttons can be useful for these actions, but there is no universally correct arrangement. Choose inputs that are easy to reach without pressing them accidentally. (Delta press information)

- Ergonomic Comfort & Endurance: Sweat-resistant silicone grip for marathon sessions. 1000mAh rechargeable battery for extended play. Upgraded 8-way D-pad with dome switches delivers precise diagonal control for fighting and retro games
Best setup by Delta system
- Game Boy and Game Boy Color: prioritize a precise, comfortable D-pad and buttons that do not require a wide grip.
- Game Boy Advance: a compact controller works well, while a standard pad is preferable for long sessions.
- NES and SNES: D-pad quality and low-profile face buttons matter more than analog sticks.
- Nintendo 64: evaluate analog-stick feel, C-button mapping, Z-button access, and shoulder comfort. Remap before replacing the controller.
- Nintendo DS: use a physical controller for movement and face buttons, but keep the iPhone or iPad touchscreen accessible. A controller does not replace tapping, dragging, or stylus-like input required by DS games.
- Multiplayer: Delta supports multiple controllers in compatible situations, but check the specific game, system, device, and controller arrangement before promising a particular multiplayer setup.
Controller buying checklist
- Confirm device fit: identify the iPhone model, Lightning or USB-C connector, iPad size, case thickness, and camera-bump clearance.
- Confirm connection support: check for direct Bluetooth or wired iOS/iPadOS support and the correct Apple-compatible mode.
- Evaluate ergonomics: consider D-pad quality, analog-stick placement, shoulder-button access, grip size, and long-session comfort.
- Check mapping: make sure Delta can assign every required input and identify spare buttons for special actions.
- Choose portability deliberately: an integrated controller is easier to carry; a separate pad is usually more flexible for iPad use.
- Check charging: review battery and charging requirements, including pass-through charging for phone-mounted models.
- Consider accessibility: remappable inputs, larger buttons, and adaptive-controller support may matter more than compactness.
- Check total cost: include a stand, replacement cable, case change, or optional companion-app membership where relevant.
- Review the return policy: fit and comfort cannot always be determined from a product description.
Troubleshooting Delta controller problems
The controller does not appear in Delta
- Confirm that it appears in the iPhone or iPad’s Bluetooth settings.
- Disconnect it from another console, computer, or phone.
- Use the correct Apple-compatible pairing mode.
- Update its firmware using the manufacturer’s instructions or app.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again.
- Restart the controller and reconnect it.
- Reopen Delta and check Settings → Controllers → Player 1.
- Test another supported controller to determine whether the problem is Delta-specific or hardware-specific.
The buttons are wrong
Open Customize Controls for the specific system. Account for differences between Nintendo’s A/B labels and Xbox-style A/B labels, then save a separate mapping for each controller. A mapping that feels natural for SNES may be poor for N64.
The phone-mounted controller will not fit
Remove the case temporarily, verify the exact connector version, check camera-bump clearance, and inspect the connector alignment. Do not force the phone into the grips. For iPad, use a separate wireless controller unless the mobile controller explicitly lists the relevant iPad model or dimensions.
N64 controls feel awkward
Try remapping first. Assign C-button functions to right-stick directions or spare buttons, and keep Z and shoulder inputs close to the index fingers. If N64 is your main system, consider an N64-oriented controller; treat the choice as a preference rather than an objective winner.
Audio or input feels delayed
Move the controller closer to the device, disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth accessories, and compare Bluetooth audio with wired headphones where possible. Latency is setup-dependent unless it has been measured under specific conditions.
What to buy first
Start with one controller, not a complete gaming setup. If you own an Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, or supported Joy-Con controller, pair that first. If portability is the priority, choose the Lightning or USB-C Backbone One version that matches your iPhone and case situation. For iPad, a full-size Bluetooth controller such as the 8BitDo Pro 3 paired with a stable stand is generally the more practical arrangement.
Add headphones, a power bank, or a different case only after identifying a real comfort, audio, battery, or fit problem. Obtain and use game files and BIOS files only in accordance with applicable law and the rights you possess.
