Public file metadata describes maxpref.dll as “PaperPort Preferences,” associated with Visioneer, Inc. The reported legacy record is a 32-bit build, but it should not be treated as a universal specification for every PaperPort release. PaperPort has passed through Visioneer, ScanSoft, Nuance and Kofax/Tungsten branding, so the correct installer depends on your release and license history.
Fix maxpref.dll errors in order
1. Repair PaperPort from Windows
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Repair is the safest first move because it can restore the missing application file and preserve the rest of PaperPort’s installation.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for PaperPort.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch PaperPort from its normal shortcut.
Some releases instead show Modify, Change, or Repair in the classic installer. If Windows does not offer a repair button, open Control Panel, select Programs → Programs and Features, right-click PaperPort, and choose Change or Repair.

The repair worked if PaperPort opens without the maxpref.dll message and its scanners, document folders and preferences are available. If the error remains, continue with a full reinstall.
2. Check whether antivirus removed the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine an old PaperPort component, particularly after a scan or a PaperPort update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning PaperPort or maxpref.dll.
- Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the detection belongs to your legitimate PaperPort installation.
- Run a full malware scan.
- After verification, repair or reinstall PaperPort rather than relying on a restored copy.
If a third-party antivirus is installed, open its quarantine or detection history instead. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to install a DLL downloaded from an unknown source.
A legitimate restored file should be followed by a PaperPort repair or reinstall. If the same file is quarantined again, leave it removed and investigate the installation with a full scan.

Time needed: 20–45 minutes
A damaged upgrade, incomplete uninstall or deleted program folder can leave a shortcut pointing to a PaperPort installation that no longer contains maxpref.dll.
Before uninstalling, back up your PaperPort documents. Older PaperPort versions may use proprietary .max files, so copy those documents and any other important PaperPort folders to a separate drive.

- Close PaperPort and scanner utilities.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select PaperPort.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the wizard.
- If PaperPort is not listed, open Control Panel → Programs and Features and remove it there.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall using the original installer, licensed product media, or the official PaperPort channel for your edition.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Open PaperPort and test the failing workflow.
If PaperPort came bundled with a Visioneer or other scanner, the original scanner CD or vendor installer may be the only source for that older release. Do not install a different PaperPort version merely because it is easier to find. Multiple releases can leave separate program directories, and the failing shortcut may still point to the old one.
The fix is confirmed when the PaperPort executable starts normally and the shortcut no longer points to a missing or partially removed installation.
4. Identify which program is actually requesting the DLL
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The message may come from PaperPort itself, a scanner utility, a startup shortcut or an old scheduled task.
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field and note the executable path.
- Look for a PaperPort folder in that same installation tree.
- In File Explorer, search the PaperPort directory for
maxpref.dll. - Do not copy the result to another folder.
- If the file exists, check whether the shortcut launches a different PaperPort installation.
If the error appears during Windows sign-in even though PaperPort is uninstalled:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete PaperPort or scanner entry only after confirming what it launches.
- Check Task Scheduler for an old PaperPort task if the message continues.
A file existing in one PaperPort directory does not prove that another PaperPort version can use it. A 32-bit PaperPort process needs compatible 32-bit components, even on 64-bit Windows. Copying that DLL into a Windows directory does not convert it into a 64-bit DLL.
5. Check Event Viewer for a missing dependency
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean maxpref.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found maxpref.dll but failed to load another DLL that it requires.

- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Reproduce the PaperPort error.
- Look for an application error at the same time.
- Record the executable name and any dependent module named in the event.
Do not download the named dependency at random. The safer response is to repair or reinstall PaperPort and, if needed, reinstall the scanner software that supplied the matching components.
If only one Windows account experiences the problem, create a temporary local user under Settings → Accounts → Other users and test PaperPort there. A damaged user profile or PaperPort preference profile may be involved, although that cannot be confirmed from the filename alone.
6. Run Windows component repair only for broader system problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful if you also see Windows errors, damaged built-in applications or widespread system-file problems, but they normally will not recreate a missing third-party PaperPort DLL.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test PaperPort again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart Windows and repeat the PaperPort repair rather than trying to place maxpref.dll in System32.

7. Update scanner software and drivers only when the failure involves scanning
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A scanner bundle may install PaperPort alongside device software. If the error started after removing or updating scanner drivers, restore the complete supported package rather than installing an unrelated driver.
- Disconnect the scanner if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
- Check Driver updates.
- Install only a driver that clearly matches the scanner.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager by pressing Windows + X and selecting it.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Print queues, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the scanner and choose Properties to check its status.
- If necessary, select Uninstall device, restart, and install the exact driver from the scanner manufacturer or original PaperPort bundle.
- Repair PaperPort again after the driver installation.

8. Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
Time needed: 2 minutes to verify
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 maxpref.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and OLE DLLs or ActiveX controls. A normal application-support DLL may not export DllRegisterServer, and registration cannot recreate a missing file or repair PaperPort’s directory structure.

It can also report a missing dependent module, which may falsely suggest that registration was the problem. Use it only if official documentation for your exact PaperPort release specifically requires registering that component. Microsoft explains the tool and its common architecture and dependency errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Avoid downloading maxpref.dll from random DLL websites and copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
That approach can introduce malware, provide the wrong PaperPort build, use the wrong architecture, or leave other missing files and registry paths untouched. A 32-bit DLL also cannot be made 64-bit by placing it in a 64-bit Windows folder.
Use the original PaperPort installer, official product media, or the current product owner’s support and download channel. If the file is already present in a legitimate PaperPort folder, do not move it. Repair the installation that owns that folder.

System Restore can help if the failure began immediately after a known software change, but a restore point is not guaranteed to contain every third-party application file.

Which program uses maxpref.dll?
It is associated with PaperPort’s preferences component, particularly older Visioneer and ScanSoft-era installations. The exact PaperPort release that requires it is not established here.
Should I put maxpref.dll in System32?

The filename alone does not establish authenticity or a current valid digital signature. A file restored from the exact, legitimate PaperPort installer is safer than a random download. Scan suspicious copies and reinstall from official media.
Will SFC fix maxpref.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while maxpref.dll is associated with PaperPort. Use SFC after DISM when broader Windows corruption is also present, then repair PaperPort separately.
What if the message appears at startup but PaperPort is gone?
