“cnbxlf4.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows or an application cannot find a Canon printer-driver component. The cnbxlf4.dll error is usually fixed by repairing or reinstalling the Canon printer package, not by copying a loose DLL into a Windows folder.
Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches your error:
- The message appears while printing or installing a Canon printer: reinstall the exact Canon MP Drivers or printer software.
- The error started after antivirus detection: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- You removed a Canon printer but the error remains: uninstall the leftover Canon software and remove its startup reference.
- The message appears in an unrelated application: inspect that application and its startup entries. It may be trying to load an obsolete Canon component.
- Several Windows components are also failing: run DISM and SFC after repairing the Canon package.
- The file is outside a Canon driver directory or has no trusted signature: scan for malware instead of restoring it.
- The printer driver was recently updated: remove the package, restart Windows, and install the current model-specific driver.
- You no longer use the Canon printer: remove the obsolete printer software rather than restoring the DLL.
What cnbxlf4.dll is
Public file records identify cnbxlf4.dll as Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, associated with CANON INC. It is a component of a Canon inkjet printer-driver package, not a normal Windows system DLL and not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
The exact Canon printer models that use this DLL are not established by reliable public Canon documentation. Do not assume that a DLL found online belongs to your printer simply because the filename matches.
Reported third-party records also disagree about the file’s version, size, hash, and architecture. Treat filename-only metadata as insufficient proof that a replacement is correct.

A legitimate copy should be evaluated by:
- Its full file path.
- Its digital signature.
- Its installation source.
- The Canon printer software installed on the computer.
- A current security scan.
A file in System32 is not automatically a genuine Windows file. Conversely, a Canon driver file may be stored in a Windows Driver Store location without becoming part of Windows itself.
Fix 1: Reinstall the matching Canon printer driver
This is the safest and most likely repair when the error appears during printing, printer setup, or Windows startup after a Canon installation.
Identify the printer model
Look at the printer’s front panel, label, original documentation, or the existing printer entry in Windows.
Then open Canon’s official support and download portal in your browser. Search for the exact model and select the Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition installed on the computer. Download the listed MP Drivers, printer driver, or complete Canon setup package.

Do not select a driver for a similar model. Printer packages can contain different files and dependencies even when the product names look related.
Remove the existing Canon package
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable, or turn off the printer if it is connected over the network.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software.
- Remove the model-specific Canon printer software, MP Drivers, or setup package.
- If you are using an older Windows interface, open Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the Canon package there.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Canon printer and choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
If the Canon package does not appear in Installed apps, do not delete random files from the Driver Store. Continue with the official installer after restarting.
Install the package again
- Close open applications.
- Run the Canon installer you downloaded.
- Accept the setup terms and select the connection method requested by the installer.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer asks you to do so.
- Complete setup and print a Windows test page.
To print a test page, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the Canon printer, choose Printer properties, and select Print Test Page.

The repair worked if the test page prints and the original program no longer reports cnbxlf4.dll. If the same message returns, note whether it appears before the installer starts, during printer detection, or when a particular application launches. That timing determines the next step.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected driver file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
cnbxlf4.dllor Canon printer software. - Expand the entry and inspect its original file path.
- Check whether the path belongs to the Canon printer installation or driver package.
- If the location is suspicious, leave the file quarantined and select Remove if offered.
- If the file came from the official Canon installer, has a valid Canon signature, and the detection is clearly a false positive, use Restore only after confirming the source.
Restoring a quarantined file can cause Windows Security to detect it again. Reinstalling the signed Canon package is safer than restoring an isolated file because it replaces the associated driver files, permissions, catalog, and installation information together.
If the file was quarantined and reinstalling Canon immediately triggers another detection, run a full scan and contact Canon or your security vendor rather than adding a broad exclusion.

Use this check when you are unsure whether the DLL is genuine.
- Press Windows + S, search for
cnbxlf4.dll, and select Open file location if Windows finds it. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Review the General tab for its location and creation details.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- On the Details tab, review the description and publisher information.
A Canon-related driver path and a valid signature are reassuring, but they do not prove that the file is appropriate for your particular printer. An unsigned copy, a file in a temporary download folder, or a DLL associated with an unknown process should be scanned and removed rather than copied into another directory.
Fix 4: Remove an obsolete Canon driver
If you no longer own or use the Canon printer, the correct repair may be cleanup rather than restoration.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the unused Canon printer and choose Remove.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall Canon printer software and model-specific MP Drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the error still appears.
If Windows continues to reference the old driver, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Select Print server properties from the toolbar, open the Drivers tab, select the obsolete Canon driver, and choose Remove. Select the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it.
Do not remove a Canon driver that is still used by another printer. If you still receive the error after cleanup, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps for an old Canon utility and check the program named in the error.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when multiple Windows files or services are failing, or when the Canon installer itself cannot complete because Windows components may be damaged. They are not a substitute for reinstalling the Canon printer driver.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies.
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Try the Canon installer or the affected application again.
Success means the commands complete without an unrepaired corruption message and the Canon package installs or loads normally. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, review the result and retry the Canon driver installation. A remaining cnbxlf4.dll error usually still points to the Canon package rather than a missing Windows runtime.
While repeatedly running DISM and SFC manually, it can be difficult to tell which component changed and whether the repair addressed the cause. Fix 6: Use Device Manager carefully
Device Manager can help identify a stale or failed printer driver, but it may not provide the complete Canon software package.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon printer and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current model-specific Canon package.
If the Canon printer is not listed, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, Imaging devices, and Other devices. A warning icon can indicate a failed connection or incomplete installation, but it does not identify the correct DLL by itself.
Do not replace a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit copy. A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit driver component even on 64-bit Windows. Install the architecture and Windows package Canon lists for the system and printer model.

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbxlf4.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the DLL needs.
Record:
- The exact error text.
- The program that displays it.
- The full path of
cnbxlf4.dll, if present. - Whether the problem occurs during printing, startup, or Canon setup.
- The Windows edition and architecture.
- The Canon printer model.
- Any recent antivirus event, update, uninstall, or driver change.
Do not download individual dependency DLLs. Repair the Canon package first, then inspect the affected application if the error names a non-printing program.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A printer-driver DLL normally operates as part of a package and may not support registration.

Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbxlf4.dll
unless Canon’s instructions for the exact model specifically require it. A registration error does not prove that the DLL is missing, and successful registration would not repair an incomplete printer package.
Why DLL download sites are a poor fix
Do not download cnbxlf4.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Canon package, or lack the catalog and dependent files required by the driver. It can also create “not designed to run on Windows” errors or leave the original installation problem unresolved.

Is cnbxlf4.dll malware?
The filename is associated with Canon printer software, but the name alone cannot establish safety. Check its path, signature, provenance, and scan results. A copy outside a Canon driver location deserves extra scrutiny.
