Nightreign is a standalone game in the Elden Ring universe, and you do not need the original Elden Ring to play it. Its Expeditions run through two days of timed exploration and nighttime boss fights, then culminate in a third-day Nightlord battle. What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Bandai Namco describes ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN as a standalone adventure within the Elden Ring universe. Players enter Limveld to confront the creeping night; enemies, bosses, and loot shift between sessions. The original ELDEN RING is not a prerequisite. How does an Expedition work?
An Expedition has three days. The first two combine exploration with a mandatory nighttime boss encounter; the third is a showdown with a Nightlord. During each of the first two days, the safe area contracts, pushing the party toward the night’s arena. Planning your route and deciding when to stop looting are part of the run, not optional side activities.

Days one and two: explore, gear up, and reach the boss
Use the exploration window to collect weapons, items, upgrade materials, and Runes that will help against the nighttime bosses. Because the safe area shrinks, prioritize useful pickups and a route that keeps you moving toward the required encounter rather than trying to clear every location.

Day three: face the Nightlord
After the second night boss, the party can prepare in the Spirit Shelter before beginning the final battle. Treat that pause as the last preparation window before the Nightlord encounter. Bandai Namco’s official starter guide, published June 17, 2025, outlines the Expedition sequence.
Which Nightfarers can you choose?
The official starter guide lists eight Nightfarers. Its broad role labels are useful for orientation, but they are not complete build advice or a universal ranking; character choice should also account for abilities and how a character fits the party.

The same guide says Duchess and Revenant unlock after early progression requirements. Consult the in-game unlock conditions as you progress; the guide’s broad categories should not be read as exhaustive descriptions of each character’s playstyle.
Can you play solo, and what does co-op require?
Solo play is available both offline and online. The official guide says enemy HP is scaled downward for solo play. Cooperative play requires an internet connection, so a player without one can play alone but cannot join a co-op Expedition.

Which platforms and editions are listed?
Bandai Namco’s English game page lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The Japanese product page lists packaged PS5 and PS4 editions as well as digital editions; packaging and availability can vary by region, so check the local store listing for the format you want.
Edition contents also matter if you are considering the expansion. Bandai Namco’s English game page says The Forsaken Hollows adds two Nightfarers, two bosses, and additional Shifting Earth. The Japanese official product page says the DLC requires the base game and is included in Deluxe and Collector’s editions. Check your edition’s contents before buying the expansion separately.
What should you expect from Maxroll’s Nightreign coverage?
Whether Maxroll currently has Nightreign guides or database pages, and what those pages contain or when they were updated, is not established here.
