Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →mbaeapipublic.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a Malwarebytes, game, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file. Its description is Mobile Broadband Account API, a privileged Windows API used by software and Windows components that manage mobile-broadband accounts, devices, subscribers, or network settings.
If an application reports that mbaeapipublic.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL. The file normally comes from Windows servicing, including Windows Update, the component store, installation media, or Windows recovery.

What mbaeapipublic.dll does
The Mobile Broadband Account API is part of Windows’ mobile-broadband API family. A program may mention this DLL because it attempted to call that API, or because Windows could not load the DLL or one of its dependencies.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because mbaeapipublic.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mbaeapipublic.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading mbaeapipublic.dll.”
- “mbaeapipublic.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. A dependency, Windows component, or architecture mismatch can produce the same loader message.

Known file versions and locations
These are historical examples, not a complete compatibility table. The correct build depends on your exact Windows version and servicing level.
| Architecture | Historical version | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 0.62 MB |
| 64-bit | 10.0.10586.494 | 0.85 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.10586.494 | 0.64 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.3.9600.17031 | 0.24 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.2.9200.16384 | 0.14 MB |
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32for 64-bit system files%windir%SysWOW64for 32-bit system files used by 32-bit programs
The names are confusing: SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows. Windows uses file-system redirection so a 32-bit process receives the correct architecture. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

Do not treat a copy in an application’s installation folder as authoritative. It may be an old, copied, or tampered version.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its component store
This is the safest first repair because mbaeapipublic.dll belongs to Windows itself.
Install pending updates
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist.
- Try the affected application again.
A failed update or interrupted servicing operation can leave the component store incomplete. Updating and restarting gives Windows a chance to finish that operation before system-file repair begins.
Run DISM and SFC in the correct order
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin), Windows PowerShell (Admin), or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged or missing copies. Microsoft recommends this DISM-before-SFC order in its system file repair instructions.

Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again after connecting to Windows Update, restart, and repeat SFC.

If DISM reports that repair files could not be found, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. Do not point DISM at a random Windows image or a different build.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious, particularly when Windows has several damaged components. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the definitive repair path for this system DLL.
Fix 2: Repair the affected application
If only one game or program reports the error while Windows and other applications work normally, the program may have an incompatible dependency or a damaged installation. The application is calling Windows, but that does not make the DLL part of the application’s own files.
Repair an installed Windows application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
The Repair option preserves the installation where possible while rebuilding damaged application files.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press
Windows + R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test it.
If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer. For a game launcher, use its file-verification feature if available. Do not copy mbaeapipublic.dll into the game’s folder as a substitute for repairing the installation.
If the application is old, check whether it has a current update that supports your Windows build. Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore this Windows component. Those packages do not replace mbaeapipublic.dll.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a system file after a detection, a cleanup operation, or a mistaken classification. The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe.

If Windows Security detected a copy in an application directory, do not automatically restore it. Repair Windows and reinstall the affected application from its official source instead.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Architecture matters when a 32-bit program runs on 64-bit Windows.
A 32-bit application normally receives the 32-bit Windows copy through SysWOW64. A 64-bit application uses the 64-bit copy in System32. Copying a file from one directory to the other can create a loader error instead of fixing one.
Check the application’s architecture in its documentation or installation details. Also check Settings > System > About > System type to see whether Windows itself is 64-bit or 32-bit.
If the file is present but the application still reports it as missing:
- Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Check the application’s event or launcher log for a dependency error.
- Avoid forcing a file into either system folder.
A loader diagnostic or Event Viewer entry may be required when the named DLL is present but one of its dependencies is missing.
Fix 5: Update mobile-broadband and related drivers
This DLL is an API component, not a standalone device driver, but a mobile-broadband device or its software may be the program that triggers the load.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a mobile-broadband adapter, cellular modem, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and inspect available driver updates. Install only drivers intended for your hardware and Windows version.
Do not disable or remove a device merely because the DLL error mentions mobile broadband. If the device works and only one application fails, application repair is more likely to help.

Manually hunting through several hardware vendors for the correct driver can be confusing, especially when Windows lists multiple stale devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s or Windows Update’s driver remains the preferred source.
Fix 6: Check recent system changes and disk health
Think about what changed immediately before the error appeared:
- A Windows update or upgrade
- System cleanup software
- Antivirus quarantine
- A failed application repair
- A disk problem
- Malware removal
- An interrupted Windows upgrade
If the problem began after a recent system change, use System Restore:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without intentionally removing personal documents. Microsoft lists this and other recovery paths in its Windows recovery options.
If you suspect storage damage, back up important files and check the drive’s health using the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility. Repeated system-file corruption can return when the underlying storage or Windows installation is failing.

- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Let Windows complete the reinstall and restart.
This is useful after a failed upgrade or servicing operation. Microsoft describes the process in its repair reinstall instructions.
If that option is unavailable or unsuccessful, back up important data and consider System Restore, Reset this PC, or a clean Windows installation. A matching installation image may also be needed for advanced manual system-file replacement. That procedure is not a routine fix and should be attempted only after SFC identifies the exact unrepaired file.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can supply malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with altered contents. Even a clean-looking replacement may not match the component store or its dependencies, and copying it into System32 can create additional corruption.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 mbaeapipublic.dll is normally inappropriate. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows API/runtime component is not automatically repaired by registering it, and a registration error does not restore a missing system file. Microsoft explains these limitations in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not toggle Windows Features at random
Windows Features can install optional components, but there is no evidence that enabling unrelated features restores this DLL. Use the Windows servicing and application-repair paths above instead.
FAQ
Is mbaeapipublic.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Mobile Broadband Account API. A filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is genuine, so check its location, Microsoft digital signature, and Windows Security results.
Is it part of Malwarebytes?
No. The mbae prefix can cause confusion, but this file’s documented identity is Microsoft Windows Mobile Broadband Account API.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does a game mention it?
The game, launcher, or a related Windows subsystem attempted to load the API, or Windows returned a dependency error during startup. That does not prove the game shipped the DLL.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file specifically. Those runtimes do not replace this Windows component. Repair Windows first, then repair the application if only that application fails.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The missing item may be a dependency, or the copy may have the wrong architecture or build. Run DISM and SFC, check both system directories where appropriate, and repair the affected application.
When is manual replacement acceptable?
Only as an advanced Windows repair using a verified file from the same Windows build, after SFC identifies the exact unrepaired file. Windows servicing or recovery is safer for normal cases.
