mcp.dll is usually a legacy game file, not a standard Windows component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the specific game that needs it. Do not download a replacement DLL or copy one into System32; first identify the game, check its installation files and determine whether modern Windows is blocking old disc protection.
What this file actually does
Public inventories show mcp.dll inside several older PC games, including Age of Empires II, Need for Speed: Porsche 2000, Crimson Skies, Shogun: Total War, SWAT 3 and Metal Gear Solid. The filename alone does not identify one publisher or one product.

Available inventories describe a Win32 DLL, with some listings showing version 1.0.6.0 and a size of 67,584 bytes. Those details are useful clues, but they do not prove that every release contains the same file. Its available company, product and description fields are blank.

Some affected games used older disc-protection components. A recurring file group includes names such as clcd16.dll, clcd32.dll, clokspl.exe, dplayerx.dll, drvmgt.dll and secdrv.sys. This association suggests a SafeDisc-era installation, but it does not conclusively prove that mcp.dll itself performs a particular protection function.
Also check the exact filename. mcp.dll is different from McpManagementService.dll, a Microsoft file associated with the Universal Print service. Repair steps for one do not necessarily apply to the other.

Fix 1: Identify the exact game and installation folder
Before replacing anything, establish which executable is requesting mcp.dll.

Find the program from its shortcut
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Note the folder containing the game’s main
.exefile.
If the shortcut opens a launcher, inspect the launcher’s settings for the actual game directory. You can also search File Explorer for mcp.dll, then examine the folder containing any matching copy.
Check the complete error
Write down:
- The exact error text.
- The executable named in the message.
- Whether the error says missing, corrupted, cannot load or specified module not found.
- Your Windows version.
- Whether the game came from an original disc, a publisher installer or a legitimate digital store.
- Whether nearby files include
secdrv.sys,clcd32.dllordrvmgt.dll.
Do not assume that a generic “mcp.dll was not found” message identifies a Windows problem. It usually means the application could not find a dependency in its expected location.
Fix 2: Use the game’s repair or verification feature
A legitimate digital installation may be able to restore the original file without removing your settings.
Look in the game launcher or store client for an option named Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, Scan and repair or Validate files. Start the process, allow it to replace missing or damaged files, and then launch the game again.

For a Windows-managed application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the … menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair does not appear, or if it does not restore the file, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data. Traditional desktop programs may instead provide repair through:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
How to tell whether this worked
Open the game directory and confirm that the installation process restored the required files. Then launch the game normally. If the missing-file message is gone but a new message mentions secdrv.sys, a blocked driver or the CD, the DLL was only the first problem.
Fix 3: Reinstall from the original or official source
For an old disc release or standalone installer, a clean reinstall is usually the definitive repair.
- Back up saved games if they are stored inside the game folder.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the game and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install from the original disc, the publisher’s installer or a legitimate digital-store installation.
- If the installer offers a destination folder, use a normal application folder rather than manually placing files in a Windows system directory.
- Start the game once after installation.
If you copied files from optical media before installing, repeat the copy carefully. An incomplete copy can omit a DLL or installer component. Do not mix files from another edition, another disc or another game. Even if two files have the same name and apparent size, they may not be compatible.

Those runtimes may matter for a separate error, but mcp.dll normally comes from the application that installed it.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
An antivirus product may have removed or quarantined an old game file. Older protection-related files can receive detections, and a filename by itself does not prove that a file is safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections that mention the game folder or
mcp.dll. - Expand a detection to inspect its path, name and action.
- If the file came from a trusted original installer, scan the installer and the complete game folder first.
- Restore or allow the file only when you have confirmed its provenance and understand the security warning.
If the detection identifies a tampered installer or malware, do not restore it. Remove the unsafe installation and obtain the game again from a trusted official source. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how to review detections and the risks of allowing unsafe files.

After a legitimate repair, add an exclusion only if you fully understand the security implications and the installation is trusted. Avoid disabling antivirus protection just to make an old game start.

Some old disc-based games installed SafeDisc protection. Microsoft documents secdrv.sys as the driver used by SafeDisc-protected games and later restricted or disabled that driver because of security concerns. Microsoft’s MS07-067 bulletin and MS15-097 information describe this issue.
This creates an important distinction:
- Restoring
mcp.dllmay remove the missing-file message. - It may not make the game run on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Re-enabling an obsolete, vulnerable driver is not a safe general solution.
Prefer an official patched release, a publisher-supported update or a legitimate digital edition that does not require the blocked disc driver. If no supported release exists, use the game only in a properly isolated legacy Windows environment and keep that environment away from sensitive activity. Do not permanently enable vulnerable protection drivers on your everyday Windows installation.
You can try basic compatibility settings, but they are not a replacement for the missing file or the obsolete driver:
- Right-click the game executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the game requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game.
If the error names secdrv.sys, a blocked driver or a missing CD, compatibility mode alone is unlikely to solve it.

mcp.dll is normally an application file, so Windows repair commands will not usually recreate it. Use them when you also have Windows symptoms, such as multiple built-in components failing, update corruption or protected system files reporting errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If the commands report that they could not repair the component, copy the exact result and continue troubleshooting Windows separately. Do not copy the output of SFC or DISM into the game folder.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis difficult. Fix 7: Check drivers only for a driver-specific error
A normal mcp.dll missing message does not indicate that a display, sound or chipset driver needs updating. Use Device Manager only when the error also mentions a device, hardware initialization or a driver file.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Review the provider, date and version.
- Choose Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If an update caused the failure, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. For a game-specific display problem, obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer rather than substituting a DLL.
Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale is time-consuming; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, while its driver installation requires the full version. It is not a substitute for restoring mcp.dll or fixing SafeDisc compatibility.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run regsvr32 mcp.dll as a generic repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points; it does not download a missing file, repair a damaged installation or fix a blocked game driver. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility.
If the DLL is missing, reinstall the application. If it is present but cannot load, investigate its matching game files, architecture, antivirus status and dependencies instead.
32-bit versus 64-bit considerations
Public inventories identify this mcp.dll as Win32, which is consistent with older 32-bit games. A 32-bit game can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application files in its own installation directory.
Do not try to solve an architecture mismatch by copying the file between System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders are managed Windows locations, and moving third-party DLLs there can cause search-order and version conflicts. Restore the file using the game’s installer or verification process.
If the error remains after reinstalling
At that point, the missing file may no longer be the main issue. Collect these details:

- The exact game title and edition.
- The full executable path.
- The complete error message.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 build information.
- Whether the source was a disc, publisher installer or digital edition.
- Whether
mcp.dllis present in the game directory. - Whether
secdrv.sys,clcd32.dllordrvmgt.dllis present. - Any relevant Event Viewer entry.
To open the event log, right-click Start, select Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application, and look for an entry created at the time of the failure. Do not upload private product keys or unrelated personal data when requesting support.

Is mcp.dll a Windows system file?
It is not established as a standard Windows component. It is commonly found with older games and normally belongs in the game’s directory.
Can I download mcp.dll from a DLL website?
