Medal.exe: What It Is, Whether It’s Safe, and How to Disable or Remove It

Medal.exe is usually Medal’s game-recording process, but the filename alone proves nothing. Verify the source, path, signature, and Defender results before deciding whether to keep, disable, or remove it.

Medal.exe is normally the Windows desktop process for Medal, a game-recording, editing, and sharing app. Its background activity is expected because Medal keeps a replay buffer so a hotkey can save recent gameplay. The filename alone cannot prove that a particular file is genuine, however. Check the file’s source, full path, digital signature, and Microsoft Defender results before allowing or removing it.

What Medal.exe does

Medal.exe is the executable used by Medal’s Windows desktop application. Medal is designed to record gameplay, edit clips, and share them. The app can remain active while you play, retaining recent footage until you press a capture hotkey. You can choose custom clip lengths and balance game, microphone, and Discord audio as separate tracks.

Medal’s homepage reported 2,989,378,366 clips uploaded and more than 12 million friends connected when accessed on October 15, 2026. Those are the service’s own current counters, not an independent measurement of usage or safety.

Medal’s privacy policy identifies Medal B.V. as the operator. The policy, updated October 1, 2026, says the desktop and mobile services let users record, watch, and share clips of games or other on-screen activity they choose to capture. That can include software, browser windows, and online services. Recording is therefore an intentional feature, but you should review what you capture and where you share it.

Is Medal.exe a virus?

The official Medal application is described by third-party security reviewers as a legitimate game recorder, but a filename is not an authenticity check. Malware can copy a familiar name, and a modified or unrelated program can also be called Medal.exe. Treat the specific file on your PC as unverified until you inspect it.

Microsoft notes that unknown software is not automatically malware. Reputation and technical analysis determine whether software is later classified as malware or potentially unwanted. Microsoft defines malware as software that compromises user security. A warning is a reason to investigate, not proof that every Medal installation is malicious.

No independent study or regulator-published prevalence figure establishes how often Medal.exe infections occur. Do not interpret process-directory risk percentages as a measured infection rate.

Why an antivirus might flag Medal.exe

Security products can alert on an executable when its reputation is unknown, its signature cannot be verified, or its behavior resembles software that records screens, starts with Windows, communicates with online services, or changes files. Those are general detection possibilities, not evidence that the official Medal program performs malicious actions. A copied file in an unexpected folder, a changed signature, or a detection that remains after updates deserves more suspicion than a clean, signed file installed from Medal’s official download.

False positives are also possible, especially after a new release or a security-intelligence update. Do not create a Defender exclusion merely to silence an alert. Verify the file first, and keep it quarantined if you cannot establish where it came from.

How to verify the Medal.exe file on your PC

Use these checks on the exact executable that generated the alert. Menu names are current for Windows 10 and Windows 11, although small wording differences can occur between builds.

  1. Locate the running process. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On Windows 11, select Details; on Windows 10, open the Details tab. Find Medal.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. Record the complete path. A location you do not recognize, a randomly named folder, or a copy in a temporary directory warrants additional scrutiny.
  2. Inspect the publisher signature. Close the process if necessary, right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the available signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match the installer you obtained, do not assume the file is genuine.
  3. Confirm the installation source. Think back to how Medal arrived on the computer. An installer downloaded from Medal’s official site is more credible than an attachment, cracked-game bundle, or an unknown “codec” package. If you cannot identify the source, uninstall the program and obtain a fresh installer later from the official source.
  4. Scan the file directly. In File Explorer, right-click Medal.exe and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. If the option is hidden, choose Show more options first. Let the scan finish and note the exact detection name and action taken.
  5. Check whether the alert follows the file. Update Defender’s security intelligence, then scan the same file again. A detection that disappears after an update may have been a reputation issue; a repeated detection, especially for a file with no valid signature, should be treated as unsafe.

What to do when Microsoft Defender detects it

Update security intelligence

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates. Allow the update to complete before rescanning. Security-intelligence updates can change how a file is classified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a full scan

Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan, and choose Scan now. A full scan checks all accessible files and running programs, so it can take substantially longer than a quick scan.

Use Defender Offline for a persistent or severe alert

In the same Scan options screen, select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and choose Scan now. Windows will restart and scan before the normal desktop loads, which helps when a process resists removal. Save open work first. If Defender quarantines the file, leave it quarantined while you determine its source and signature; do not restore it simply because Medal is a familiar name.

Remove software you do not need

Microsoft recommends uninstalling software you do not need when a security alert persists. If you do not use Medal, remove it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds), find Medal, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Restart Windows and run another Defender scan.

Why Medal.exe runs in the background

Background operation is central to Medal’s replay-buffer design. The app must be ready to retain recent gameplay and respond when you press its capture hotkey. Seeing a Medal process in Task Manager while no clip is being edited is therefore not, by itself, suspicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not want that behavior, first open Medal and review its startup or background settings. Labels can vary by release. Turn off any option that launches Medal with Windows or keeps capture active, then exit the app from its notification-area icon. If the process returns after a restart, use Windows’ startup controls as a second check.

Disable automatic startup without uninstalling

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
  2. Find Medal and switch it off.
  3. Alternatively, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps (Windows 11) or Startup (Windows 10), right-click Medal, and choose Disable.
  4. Restart Windows and confirm that Medal no longer launches automatically. You can still start it manually when you want to record.

Disabling startup does not delete the application or existing clips. It only prevents automatic launch; opening Medal yourself can start its processes again.

How to uninstall Medal.exe completely

  1. Copy or export any clips you need before removing the app. Clips stored only on the computer may not be available after an uninstall or cleanup.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for Medal, open its menu, select Uninstall, and follow the uninstaller’s prompts.
  4. Restart the computer. Check Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager’s startup list for any remaining Medal entry.
  5. Run a Defender full scan. If an executable remains in an unexpected folder or Defender still reports it, quarantine it and investigate the detection rather than deleting random files from Windows directories.

If Windows says the app is running, close Medal from the notification area, end Medal.exe in Task Manager, and run the uninstall again. Do not end unrelated Windows processes just because their names look unfamiliar.

Reducing capture and privacy exposure while keeping Medal

Medal’s policy says the services capture games or other on-screen activity that you choose to record. Review your hotkeys so an accidental press does not capture a browser window, private conversation, or account page. When recording, select only the game or window you intend to share, and review each clip before uploading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the app’s available sharing and privacy controls to decide who can view a clip. If your version offers separate upload, discovery, or automatic-sharing switches, turn off the ones you do not need. The policy’s scope means that “game recorder” does not automatically mean “game-only recorder”; user-selected software, browser windows, and online services can also be captured.

When to keep, disable, or remove it

  • Keep it when the file came from the official installer, has a valid signature, and Defender reports no threat. Background activity is expected for replay capture.
  • Disable startup when you occasionally record but do not want Medal running after every boot.
  • Uninstall it when you no longer use the service, cannot verify the file’s source, or a repeated Defender detection remains unresolved.
  • Seek deeper malware help when detections persist after uninstalling and an offline scan, or when other accounts, browsers, or security settings show unexplained changes.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription.

Bottom line

Medal.exe is normally Medal’s legitimate Windows recorder, and its background presence is expected when replay capture is enabled. The safe decision depends on the particular file: verify its source, path, signature, and Defender results. If those checks fail or an alert persists, quarantine and remove the program, then scan offline rather than trusting the filename.
