You can change most settings in an existing Space Engineers save without creating a new world. From the main screen, choose Load Game, select the save, choose Edit Settings, change the available options, save, and reload the world.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Two creation-time choices are exceptions: Scenario template and Asteroid amount cannot be changed after the world is created. If a setting is not visible, check Advanced > Experimental Settings; the available controls depend on your game version and whether you are playing on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.

Official Space Engineers Wiki, World Settings
- Leave the world and return to the game’s main screen. If you are running a dedicated server, stop it using the host’s normal stop or restart control before editing files.
- Click Load Game.
- Select the existing world in the save list.
- Click Edit Settings.
- Change the options you need. The controls shown depend on your platform, game version, and whether experimental features are enabled.
- Save the changes, load the world again, and check the result in-game.
This menu is the safest choice for normal changes because the game validates the values and writes the save in its expected format. It also gives you a clear way to see which settings your edition exposes.
Which settings can be changed in an existing save?
The Load Game editor exposes most saved-world settings. The exact labels and grouping can change between versions, but the editable categories commonly include the following.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Game mode: switch between Creative and Survival for the save.
- Online mode: control whether other players can join and which multiplayer mode the world uses.
- Player limits: adjust the maximum number of players permitted by the world.
- Autosave: change whether autosaves are enabled and how the game handles them.
- Backup count: set how many rotating save backups the game retains, where that control is available.
- Progression: enable or disable progression rules and related restrictions.
- Other world rules: additional gameplay, environment, spawning, inventory, damage, and interaction controls exposed by your version.
Changing from Survival to Creative can alter the way players build and obtain materials, so treat it as a gameplay decision rather than a cosmetic toggle. If you are changing a shared world, tell other players what changed and when; the setting applies to everyone using that save.
Settings that cannot be changed after world creation
Scenario template
The scenario template is selected when the world is created. It defines the starting scenario and its intended setup. The official World Settings documentation states that this value cannot be changed after creation. Editing the save therefore cannot turn one scenario into another while preserving the existing world as if it had been created from the new template.
Asteroid amount
Asteroid amount is also a creation-time choice and cannot be changed through the existing-world editor. Do not expect Edit Settings to regenerate the original world layout or add a different asteroid distribution to an established save. To use a different amount, create a new world with that value or start from an appropriate scenario copy.

When a control is missing: Advanced and Experimental Settings
Some options are hidden until you open the advanced portion of the settings screen. In the world editor, look for Advanced, then expand Experimental Settings. PC builds generally expose more experimental controls than console editions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Xbox and PlayStation do not expose every PC Experimental feature. A missing checkbox is therefore not necessarily an error or a damaged save; it may be unavailable on that platform. Controls can also move or receive different names after a game update, so use the current labels shown by your installation rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.
If the option is still absent after checking Advanced, it may be represented only in the save configuration or in an administrator interface. Use manual XML editing only after making a recoverable backup.
Editing a scenario or workshop world
Preconfigured scenarios and downloaded workshop worlds have an extra step because you first need a local saved copy. Editing one can also break the gameplay sequence, triggers, restrictions, or progression that the author intended.
- Create or download the scenario or workshop world.
- Open it and allow it to finish loading.
- Save the world, then close it completely.
- Return to the main screen and choose Load Game.
- Open the world’s folder from the load interface.
- Select the saved copy and click Edit.
- Change only the settings you understand, then save and test the result.
The official guidance warns that editing a preconfigured scenario can break its intended gameplay. Keep the original download or an untouched save if you may want to restore the author’s setup.

Local PC saves and manual XML editing
Most players should use Load Game > Edit Settings. Manual editing is for a setting that the menu does not expose, for recovery work, or for administrators who need to apply a value consistently across a hosted save.
Find the Windows save
On Windows PC, local saves are stored under:
%appdata%SpaceEngineersSaves<SteamId>
Each world normally has its own folder beneath the Steam ID directory. The official modding documentation identifies Sandbox.sbc as a file containing world settings as well as player and faction data. The SessionSettings reference prioritizes sandbox_config.sbc for manual setting edits, and many of the same values can also be exposed through World Settings, the Admin menu, or a Dedicated Server GUI. File names and capitalization matter on systems or tools that treat them as distinct.
Safe XML-editing procedure
- Exit the world. For a dedicated server, stop the server before touching its files.
- Copy the entire save folder to a location outside the world folder. Give the copy a date or descriptive name so you can identify it later.
- Open the relevant configuration file in a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Locate the existing setting inside the appropriate XML element. Do not delete surrounding tags or change unrelated player, faction, mod, or world data.
- Change only the value you need, preserving capitalization, quotation marks, brackets, and the file’s XML structure.
- Save the file, start the game or server, and load a test copy first. Confirm the setting in the in-game menus or by observing the resulting behavior.
- Only after the test succeeds should you apply the same change to the live save.
An XML syntax error can prevent a world from loading or cause the game to ignore the edited value. If that happens, stop the game, restore the backup folder, and retry with a smaller change. Do not keep making edits to a damaged live copy.
Local menu editing versus manual XML editing
| Consideration | Load Game > Edit Settings | Manual XML edit |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | Highest for ordinary options; the game writes the supported format. | Lower; malformed XML or an invalid value can stop loading or be ignored. |
| Settings coverage | Most saved-game options, with additional controls under Advanced > Experimental Settings. | Can reach values represented in the save when the user interface does not expose them. |
| Must the game or server be stopped? | Leave the world before opening the editor; no file-level edit is required. | Yes. Exit the game, and stop a dedicated server before changing files. |
| Platform availability | Available wherever that version provides the Load Game editor, although console editions expose fewer experimental controls. | Primarily practical on PC or on a server where the host provides file access. |
| Reversibility | Undo by opening the editor and changing the value again, provided the save remains healthy. | Reversible only if you kept an untouched copy of the entire save folder. |
Changing settings on a dedicated server
A hosted world has two different configuration stages that are easy to confuse. A server’s creation settings are not automatically the configuration of an already-created save.

Edit the existing world configuration
For hosts that provide file access, the existing world’s configuration is commonly under:
/config/Saves/World/Sandbox_config.sbc
Make a copy of the complete save outside the world directory before editing. Stop the server, change only the required XML value, save it, and use the provider’s documented restart procedure. The server may not read a changed file until it has fully stopped and started again.

Do not edit the wrong server file
The SessionSettings block in SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg is used when creating a new world. It should not be treated as the authoritative configuration for an existing world. Changing that block may affect future world creation while leaving the current save unchanged. For an established world, edit the world’s own save configuration or use the host’s existing-world settings interface.
Backing up and testing without risking the live world
A backup is useful only if it is separate from the folder you are editing. A copy inside the same world directory can be overwritten, included in a cleanup operation, or altered along with the original.
- Make the copy before every manual edit or major settings change.
- Store it outside the active save folder and keep at least one untouched version.
- For a shared or dedicated world, record the date, the setting changed, and who made the change.
- Test on a duplicate save when the change affects progression, scenario logic, mods, or multiplayer rules.
- Keep the original scenario or workshop save separately if you are experimenting with its settings.
To test a local copy, give it a distinct folder name, load it, and verify the setting before touching the production save. For a server, use a separate test instance if your host supports one; otherwise schedule a maintenance window and retain the old files until players confirm the result.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Edit Settings button is missing
Confirm that you selected a saved world from Load Game, not a world-creation template or a server-creation screen. A scenario may need to be opened, saved, and closed once before it appears as an editable save. If the game is still running that world, leave it and return to the main screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe setting is not listed
Open Advanced > Experimental Settings. If it remains absent, check whether your platform supports the feature. Xbox and PlayStation do not expose every PC experimental option. A server administrator may also need to use the Admin menu, Dedicated Server GUI, or the save configuration file.
The change does not take effect
Save the settings, exit the world, and load it again. On a dedicated server, perform a complete stop and restart according to the host’s procedure. Make sure you edited the existing world’s configuration rather than SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg, which is associated with creating a new world.
The world will not load after an XML edit
Stop making further changes. Replace the edited folder with the untouched backup, confirm that the restored copy loads, and then retry one value at a time while preserving the original XML structure. If you cannot identify the damaged element, use the in-game editor for supported settings instead of continuing to edit the file manually.
The scenario no longer behaves as intended
Restore the untouched scenario or workshop save. Preconfigured scenarios can depend on their original settings, triggers, and restrictions; a technically valid save can still produce a broken or unintended experience after editing.
Quick Recap
What to check after changing a world
- Reload the save rather than judging the result from the settings screen alone.
- Confirm the selected game mode and multiplayer access.
- Check that the expected player limit applies when another player joins.
- Verify autosave and backup behavior after the next save cycle.
- For progression or experimental changes, test the specific action that was previously restricted.
- On a server, have an administrator and an ordinary player test their respective permissions.
- Keep the backup until the world has run normally and players have confirmed that no scenario or mod behavior was damaged.
Practical decision guide
- Changing a normal rule such as game mode, online mode, player limit, progression, or autosave: use Load Game > Edit Settings.
- Looking for a PC-only or hidden control: check Advanced > Experimental Settings and confirm that your platform supports it.
- Editing a workshop or preconfigured scenario: save a local copy first and preserve the untouched original.
- Changing a value absent from every menu: stop the game or server, back up outside the world folder, and edit the prioritized save configuration while preserving XML.
- Managing an established dedicated-server world: use the host dashboard or the world’s
Sandbox_config.sbc; do not rely on the new-world settings inSpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Trying to change Scenario template or Asteroid amount: do not edit the existing save expecting the original layout to regenerate; create a new world with the desired creation settings.
