If mediainfo.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the video, ripping, cataloguing, or metadata application that requested it before attempting any Windows-wide fix.
MediaInfo extracts technical and tag information from audio and video files. MediaArea provides separate GUI, command-line, and DLL packages; the DLL is designed to be embedded in other software. The exact application cannot be identified from the filename alone.

Identify the DLL and the failure
The correct copy must match the program that loads it. MediaArea provides Windows packages for Intel 32-bit, Intel 64-bit, and ARM64 systems. Historical copies may have different versions, sizes, dependencies, and compiler builds, so a file-size listing alone does not establish that a DLL is correct.

| What you find | What it usually means | First action |
|---|---|---|
MediaInfo.dll beside an application executable |
The application uses a private native library | Repair or reinstall that application |
| “MediaInfo.dll is missing from your computer” | The file was removed, never installed, or extracted elsewhere | Run the application installer or launcher repair |
0x8007007E or error 126 |
Windows could not find the DLL or one of its dependencies | Check the application folder and architecture |
Access is denied or 0x80070005 |
The process can see the file but cannot read or execute it | Check permissions, quarantine, and security software |
BadImageFormatException, bad image, or “not designed to run on Windows” |
The DLL may have the wrong architecture, be damaged, or have an incompatible dependency | Match x86, x64, or ARM64 and restore the application’s supplied copy |
The error may appear after an update, incomplete reinstall, manual extraction, cleanup operation, antivirus quarantine, or an installer that omitted native files. A message naming MediaInfo.dll can also mean that a dependency underneath MediaInfo is missing.

1. Repair the application that reports the error
This is the most likely fix. MediaInfo.dll normally belongs beside the executable or in another location used by that application’s native DLL search path. It is not normally installed globally in Windows.
Find the affected application
- Note the exact program shown in the error.
- If Windows shows only a generic dialog, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Start the affected application again.
- On the Processes tab, right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Look in that folder for the application executable and
MediaInfo.dll. - If the application is launched through Steam, another game launcher, or a software manager, open that launcher instead of copying files manually.
If the file is absent, do not create a replacement in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Use the program’s own repair option
For a traditional desktop application:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify if available.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the application, restart the computer, then install it again from the developer’s official installer. Keep the installer architecture consistent with the program you need.
For a Microsoft Store application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application. If it still fails, return to the same page and choose Reset, understanding that this may remove the application’s stored settings.
Verify launcher-managed files
If the program comes from a launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or Scan files command. This is safer than downloading a standalone DLL because the launcher can restore the exact files and versions expected by that application.
The repair worked if the application starts and can open a media file. If the same message returns, continue with architecture and quarantine checks instead of repeatedly copying DLLs.
2. Match the application’s architecture
A 32-bit process needs a 32-bit MediaInfo DLL. A 64-bit process needs a 64-bit DLL. An ARM64 process requires the ARM64 build or a package that the application vendor explicitly supports.
Windows being 64-bit does not prove that the application is 64-bit. Older media tools, plug-ins, and wrappers are often 32-bit.

Check the process architecture
- Start the affected application until the error appears, if possible.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform or Architecture if your Windows build provides it.
- Look for an
exesuffix such as32-bitor*32.
You can also inspect the application’s installer or documentation. For a .NET application, check its project’s Platform target. x86 produces a 32-bit process, x64 produces a 64-bit process, and Any CPU depends on the project’s runtime settings and operating system.
Download the matching DLL package from MediaArea’s official MediaInfo Windows downloads, or obtain the copy bundled by the application developer. Place it in the application directory only when the application’s deployment instructions call for that location.
Do not replace a working older DLL with the newest release automatically. MediaArea notes that an application can fail with a newer library if it was not designed or tested for that version. If the application previously worked, restore the version supplied with it or use the version specified by its developer.
3. Check quarantine and file blocking
Security software, endpoint protection, cleanup utilities, or manual deletion can remove a legitimate application file. That possibility does not prove a false positive, so verify the application’s source before restoring anything.
Recommended Free Tools
Check Microsoft Defender history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
MediaInfo.dll. - Review the file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if the application came from a trusted developer and the security administrator permits it.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward so its complete file set is restored.
If a work or school security product quarantined the file, contact its administrator rather than adding a broad exclusion. A narrow, policy-approved exclusion for the application directory is safer than disabling protection globally.
The fix worked if the DLL remains present after restarting and the application launches without immediately being quarantined again. If it is removed again, investigate the detection and obtain a clean installer from the application developer.
4. Check permissions for services and servers
A desktop user may be able to read MediaInfo.dll while an IIS application pool, scheduled task, or Windows service cannot.

An access-denied error that disappears after granting read-and-execute access confirms a permissions problem. If the error changes to error 126 or a bad-image message, continue with dependency and architecture checks.
5. Check for a missing native dependency
Error 126 can occur when Windows cannot find MediaInfo.dll, but it can also occur when Windows finds MediaInfo and cannot load a dependent native library.
Use the application’s official installer and deployment instructions first. If you maintain the software, inspect the published output and use a trusted dependency-analysis tool to identify the missing module. Do not assume that installing a Microsoft runtime fixes every MediaInfo failure.
A Visual C++ Redistributable package is a conditional diagnostic step, not a default cure. Install the architecture required by the application from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation, then restart and test. If the application still fails, restore its complete package rather than adding unrelated DLLs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Repair Windows components only when other software is also failing
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not manufacture or restore a missing third-party MediaInfo DLL.
Use them when several unrelated applications fail, Windows reports system-file damage, or the issue began with broader operating-system corruption.

Reinstalling the application that owns MediaInfo.dll remains the definitive fix when its package is incomplete.

A MediaInfo load error is not normally a graphics-driver problem. Update drivers only if the application log, Device Manager, or a separate hardware error identifies a related device or driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category named in the error or application documentation.
- Right-click the device.

When checking many devices manually makes it difficult to tell which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update will not replace the correct MediaInfo library for a broken application.

Do not download a random DLL
DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version incompatible with the requesting application. Even a genuine file may not fix the missing dependency, search-path, permissions, or packaging problem.
Use the application developer’s installer or MediaArea’s official MediaInfo packages. Do not use a file merely because its name matches.
Do not copy it into System32
MediaInfo.dll is not a Windows component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not guarantee that the application will load it. The correct location is normally the application directory or the native search path defined by its deployment.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. MediaInfo is a normal native runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX component. Running:

regsvr32 MediaInfo.dll
does not repair a missing dependency and may produce another confusing error.
Do not enable random Windows Features
There is no standard Windows Feature that installs MediaInfo.dll. Enable optional Windows components only when the application’s own documentation explicitly requires them.
Developer and wrapper deployments
If you build software with .NET, Python, Delphi, C++, or another language, treat MediaInfo.dll as a native runtime dependency.
- Package the DLL with the executable or in the location expected by the wrapper.
- Match the DLL to the process architecture.
- Include native files in the installer and published output, not only the development
bindirectory. - Test on a clean machine without your development environment installed.
- For Python wrappers such as
pymediainfo, ensure the native MediaInfo library is available through the documented package location orPATH. - For services and IIS, test under the real service identity rather than only an interactive administrator account.
A program can work from Visual Studio and fail after installation when MediaInfo.dll was present in binDebug but omitted from the installer.
FAQ
Is mediainfo.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party native library from MediaArea’s MediaInfo project and is distributed with MediaInfo, applications that embed it, developer packages, and wrappers.
Which program installed mediainfo.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the program. Find the executable named in the error, inspect its installation directory, and check recently installed or updated media applications.
Is mediainfo.dll malware?
Not automatically. A legitimate MediaInfo library can be part of a trusted application, but the file should be evaluated by its location, source, signature, and security history. A random download is not a safe verification method.
Why does a newer DLL break an older application?
The application may depend on a specific MediaInfo API, behavior, or build. Restore the application’s original copy or use the version recommended by its developer.
Should I run SFC for this error?
Only when broader Windows corruption is plausible. SFC repairs Windows components; it does not restore a third-party MediaInfo file.
