optix.1.dll is an NVIDIA OptiX GPU ray-tracing library used by certain older applications, games, renderers, SDK samples and creative software. It is normally an application-owned file, not a Windows component.

The safest fix is to identify the program in the error, then repair, verify or reinstall that program from its official installer. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32. The application may require a particular OptiX binary-compatibility version, file architecture and vendor build.
Older OptiX applications commonly deploy the DLL beside their executable or in a program subfolder. A historical Adobe After Effects installation, for example, placed it in its Support Files directory. A missing optix.1.dll therefore usually means that the application package is incomplete, damaged, quarantined or incompatible.
What optix.1.dll is and where it belongs
The .1 in optix.1.dll is not a universal “OptiX version 1” label. It identifies a binary-compatibility interface. An application requesting optix.1.dll cannot normally use optix.2.dll as a drop-in replacement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The correct file can also differ by architecture. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit library, while a 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit library. There is no single file size, hash or build that applies to every copy of optix.1.dll.
It normally belongs in one of these locations:
- The application folder beside the program executable
- A vendor-managed runtime folder
- A specific support directory installed by the application
It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random folder added to
PATH
Windows searches the application directory before many system locations, so placing an unrelated copy in a system folder can create version collisions rather than solve the problem. See Microsoft’s explanation of DLL search order.
Modern OptiX applications are different. OptiX 7 and later generally load the implementation through the NVIDIA display driver rather than shipping a legacy optix.1.dll from the SDK. Installing a current OptiX SDK therefore does not normally restore this older application-local file.
Likely causes
| Cause | What it means | Best remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete application files | The program’s private runtime is missing | Repair, verify or reinstall the application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the file | Check Protection history and reinstall the application |
| Wrong ABI or architecture | The restored DLL does not match the program | Restore the exact vendor-supplied build |
| Modern driver problem | A newer OptiX application cannot load through the NVIDIA driver | Install a compatible NVIDIA driver |
| Missing dependency | The named file exists, but another DLL it needs does not | Trace dependencies and repair the application |
| Windows corruption | Protected Windows components or installation services are damaged | Update Windows, then use DISM and SFC |
The filename alone cannot identify which program caused the error. Start with the error title, shortcut, taskbar icon or executable path.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely solution for a legacy OptiX error.

Find the owning program
- Read the title bar of the error dialog.
- Check which program was starting when the message appeared.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target to identify the executable.
- If the error appears during a game launch, note the game and launcher rather than searching Windows folders.
Do not begin by searching the entire drive for a DLL. The important question is which application requested it.
Repair an installed desktop application
Windows provides a repair option for some applications:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. For many older desktop programs, the better path is to uninstall and reinstall using the developer’s official installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter reinstalling, start the program normally. A successful repair means the original error disappears and the application reaches its usual window. If the same message returns, confirm that you reinstalled the correct application version and did not restore a DLL from another product.
Verify game files
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then launch the game.
For an Epic Games title:
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
Verification restores missing files supplied by the game publisher. If verification reports no problem but the error remains, reinstall the game or contact its developer with the exact executable path and message.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
A legitimate application file can be quarantined after an update or a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
optix.1.dlland showing the affected application’s folder. - Do not restore the file merely because its name matches.
- If the application and installer are trusted, reinstall the application first so the vendor-supplied copy is restored.
Microsoft documents these actions in Protection history in Windows Security.
If the file appeared unexpectedly, run a scan before restoring anything:

- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
A quarantined file restored from an unknown source is not a safe repair. The application’s official installer is the correct source.
Fix 3: Match the application’s architecture and OptiX ABI
A copied file can appear to fix the missing-file message and still be unusable.
Check the program’s architecture where the vendor provides that information. A 32-bit program requires a compatible 32-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program requires a compatible 64-bit DLL. The .1 suffix also matters because it identifies the ABI expected by the application.

Copying from another PC is safe only when the application version, architecture and vendor build are identical, which is difficult to establish reliably. A mismatched file can cause “entry point not found,” “bad image,” crashes or rendering failures.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the NVIDIA driver when the app is modern
A driver repair is more relevant when the affected application uses modern OptiX loading rather than requesting a legacy application-local DLL.
First identify the GPU:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the NVIDIA GPU model.
- Double-click it and select the Driver tab to note the provider, date and version.
Download the driver from NVIDIA’s official driver page, select the correct product and Windows version, and run the installer. If the installer offers Custom or Advanced, a clean installation can help when the existing driver package is damaged. The exact installer options vary by driver release.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected program.
- Check whether the error has changed.
A driver reinstall may help a modern OptiX application, but it may not restore a legacy app-local optix.1.dll. If an older program still reports the same missing file, return to the application repair or reinstall step.

Manually checking GPU models, driver branches and versions can be tedious, especially when several drivers appear current. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; installation and repair features are provided by its full version. For a program that specifically owns optix.1.dll, reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix.
Fix 5: Install only the runtime the application actually requests
Visual C++ Redistributable packages usually do not recreate optix.1.dll. Older OptiX Windows libraries were documented as statically linked to the C runtime, so installing Visual C++ is not the primary repair.

Install a Microsoft Visual C++ package only when:
- The application installer requests it
- A separate error names a missing Microsoft runtime DLL
- The developer’s support instructions require it
Do not install random runtime packages just because the error mentions a DLL.
DirectX is also not a normal source for optix.1.dll. Installing DirectX may help a separate graphics dependency, but it does not generally restore this NVIDIA application library.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components if other programs are also failing
Use Windows repair commands when you have broader signs of system corruption, not as a way to download an application-owned OptiX file.
First install pending updates:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Choose Download & install for available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
Then run DISM before SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft provides the procedure in its System File Checker guidance.
These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not supply the correct private optix.1.dll for a third-party application.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and identify repair areas, while its repair functions require the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive solution when that application owns the missing DLL.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a cleanup utility, driver change, application update or system modification, System Restore may help.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files and settings. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the application and does not guarantee that an application-owned DLL will be restored. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
If the message says “specified module could not be found”
That wording does not always mean optix.1.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Check the application folder first. If the file exists and the error continues:
- Download Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor from the official Microsoft page.
- Run Process Monitor as administrator.
- Reproduce the application error.
- Filter for the affected executable.
- Look for failed file operations around the time of the error, especially
NAME NOT FOUNDor architecture-related failures. - Use those results when contacting the application developer.
Do not replace every failed path shown in a trace. Some are normal probing behavior. The useful clue is a missing dependency in the application’s own loading chain.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 optix.1.dll
This is a runtime library, not normally a COM or ActiveX component. regsvr32 works with DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; ordinary application runtime libraries do not need registry registration. Microsoft documents the command’s requirements in its regsvr32 reference.
Running it may produce an error without changing the real problem.
FAQ
Is optix.1.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a legitimate NVIDIA OptiX library used by software that supports GPU ray tracing. A legitimate filename does not prove that every copy found on a computer is safe, however. Verify it through the application’s official installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is optix.1.dll part of Windows?
No. It is not a normal Windows system component. It is usually deployed by the application that needs it.
Can I download optix.1.dll separately?
Do not use random DLL download sites. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong architecture or ABI, or fail because another dependency is missing. Repair the affected application from its official installer instead.
Will installing OptiX 9 fix an old application?
Normally no. Modern OptiX uses driver-based loading, while older applications may require their own legacy optix.1.dll. The current SDK does not automatically provide the exact file required by an older application.
Should I copy the file to System32?
No. Keep the vendor-supplied DLL in the application directory or runtime folder where the program expects it.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually no. It may help if a separate Microsoft runtime dependency is missing, but it does not generally recreate optix.1.dll.
What if every fix fails?
Record the complete error text, executable path, application version, Windows version, GPU model, NVIDIA driver version, location of any existing optix.1.dll, file properties and relevant Process Monitor results. The software vendor can then identify the exact runtime build and dependency chain.
