Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program or Windows feature displays the error
- Whether it appears at startup, when launching one application, or after an update
- The exact wording, such as “was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- Whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether
C:WindowsSystem32MemoryDiagnostic.dllexists
memorydiagnostic.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a normal third-party application runtime. Its recorded description is Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic Task Handler, and public Windows file records place it under C:WindowsSystem32. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL.
What memorydiagnostic.dll does
Windows uses this component for memory-diagnostic tasks. Its embedded strings indicate that it helps detect or mitigate physical-memory problems and schedule memory diagnostics after system events.

The file belongs to Windows rather than to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a particular game. A program may report the error if it incorrectly requests this system component, but that does not prove the program originally installed the DLL.
The exact version, architecture, size, and related files vary between Windows releases. A file with the correct name is not automatically genuine. Its path, Microsoft digital signature, Windows build, and scan results all matter.

Why the error appears
Common causes include:
- A damaged or missing Windows component
- An interrupted Windows update or upgrade
- Disk or filesystem corruption
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive
- A manually copied DLL from a different Windows build
- A counterfeit DLL in an application folder
- An application that incorrectly requests the component
- A missing dependency rather than a missing
MemoryDiagnostic.dllitself
The message “The specified module could not be found” is especially ambiguous. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL, even when MemoryDiagnostic.dll is present.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
An incomplete update can leave protected Windows files mismatched or unavailable.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program again.
For update-related failures, run the built-in troubleshooter:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test again.
If the error began immediately after a failed upgrade, continue with the repair commands below rather than repeatedly reinstalling the affected application.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first-line repair when the file is absent from System32, damaged, or rejected by Windows. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It may appear to pause for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.

Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when SFC completes.
Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. If the program still fails, investigate the application, its dependencies, or a counterfeit DLL in its folder.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the failing program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use the recovery options below.
- DISM cannot obtain the repair files: use matching Windows installation or recovery media as a repair source. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from the internet.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair path for this component.
To save the SFC details for support, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
The file sfcdetails.txt will appear on the desktop.
Fix 3: Check the file path and digital signature
Do not restore or copy a DLL solely because its filename matches.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32MemoryDiagnostic.dll
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A legitimate Windows copy should be in the Windows system directory, not in:
- Downloads
%TEMP%- An unfamiliar application directory
- A game folder
- A user profile folder
- A removable drive
On 64-bit Windows, do not assume that a separate SysWOW64 copy must exist. Public records include both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, but the correct files depend on the installed Windows release and architecture. Let Windows servicing restore the matching copy.

If the file is in an unusual directory, do not whitelist it merely because the name is correct. Run a scan with Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Defender or another managed antivirus product may have quarantined a legitimate system file, although a detection can also indicate that a counterfeit or modified file was present.

- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to the time the error began.
- Open the detection details and check the original file path, publisher, and detection name.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original path was the Windows system directory, its Microsoft signature is valid, and the detection details support a false positive. If those checks do not agree, leave the item quarantined and run a full scan.
After a confirmed restore, run DISM and SFC again. Microsoft’s guidance on quarantine decisions is available in its Protection History documentation.

If only one program reports memorydiagnostic.dll, the program may be damaged or may be incorrectly looking for a Windows component. The error does not establish that the application officially depends on this DLL.
Try the application’s own repair option first:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after checking whether it removes application settings or local data.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For desktop programs without these options:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Right-click the application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Otherwise uninstall it, restart, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will install this Windows component. There is no evidence that those redistributables provide MemoryDiagnostic.dll.
Fix 6: Consider drivers only when the timing supports it
A driver problem is not the usual explanation for this DLL, but memory-diagnostic operations can expose broader hardware or system instability. If the error began after a driver update, inspect the related device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category associated with the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver, or obtain the correct driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver, when available.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Avoid mixing 32-bit and 64-bit drivers or installing a driver intended for a different Windows build. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and not a substitute for repairing Windows when the component itself is corrupted.

Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points.

Some public records show registration exports for certain MemoryDiagnostic.dll builds, but that does not prove manual registration is required. A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 command can create another error.
Do not run this command just because a website recommends it. Use Windows repair first. Only register the file when official software documentation specifically requires it and you have confirmed that the DLL matches the installed Windows architecture and build. Microsoft documents regsvr32 behavior in its Windows command reference.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery when repair fails
Reinstall the current Windows version
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings according to Microsoft’s repair reinstall guidance.
Use System Restore
If the error began after a driver, update, or system change:
- Open Start.
- Search for
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files. Back up important data first.
If neither option works, perform an in-place Windows repair installation using matching official Microsoft installation media. A clean installation should be the final option after backing up personal files and confirming that recovery is necessary.

Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- An unsigned or modified file
- A file containing malware
- A copy that hides the actual component-store problem
Copying a DLL into System32 or beside an executable can also cause Windows to load the wrong file first. There is no official Microsoft standalone download page for MemoryDiagnostic.dll. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Defender, Windows recovery, or official installation media instead.
What to collect if the problem remains
Before contacting IT or Microsoft support, record:
- Windows edition, version, build, and architecture
- The complete error text
- The program that displays it
- When the problem began
- The path of any
MemoryDiagnostic.dllfound - Digital signature results
- Defender Protection History details
- The results of DISM and SFC
sfcdetails.txt- Relevant entries from Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and Application
This information distinguishes a missing Windows component from a missing dependency, application defect, architecture mismatch, disk problem, or suspicious replacement file.
FAQ
Is memorydiagnostic.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is recorded as the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic Task Handler and is normally associated with the Windows system directory.
Should I download memorydiagnostic.dll separately?
No. Restore it through Windows servicing or recovery. Do not use an unaffiliated DLL archive.
Does the error prove that a game needs this file?
No. A generic loader message can be produced by an application incorrectly requesting a system DLL, or by a missing dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould I copy the file into the game folder?
No. That can cause DLL search-order and security problems. Repair the application and Windows instead.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. Registration is not a general-purpose repair method, and the presence of registration exports does not establish that registration is needed.
What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?
Check dependencies, digital signatures, architecture, application integrity, and event logs. “Module not found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named DLL.
