Meta’s Quest 1 app-support cutoff was April 30, 2024—not a new August 2026 deadline, and not a switch that instantly stopped every existing game from updating or running. The change concerned new Quest 1-compatible app submissions; developers’ decisions determine what happens to individual existing apps. Meta’s stated period for critical system bug fixes and security patches ended in August 2024.
What changed—and what did not
The original Quest, also called Quest 1 or the 2019 Quest, was Meta’s first standalone six-degrees-of-freedom headset. Contemporary reporting said Meta would stop accepting new apps that supported only Quest 1 from April 30, 2024, and new apps for newer headsets could no longer newly target Quest 1 in the same way. The policy did not automatically remove previously published apps or disable every existing app update. Road to VR’s report on the Quest 1 policy covers the announcement and its dates.
These are separate kinds of support, with different outcomes:
- New store submissions: The April 30, 2024 cutoff affected new Quest 1-compatible app submissions.
- Updates to existing apps: Developers make app-by-app choices. They may keep a Quest 1-compatible version, stop supporting the headset, or release an update aimed only at newer hardware. The cutoff did not mean all existing apps disappeared on that date.
- System software: Meta’s stated window for critical bug fixes and security patches continued through August 2024, a separate deadline from the app-submission cutoff.
- First-party features: Meta’s own services can have their own support timelines; their retirement does not establish that every third-party game has also stopped working.
- Store access and app operation: A store listing, an ability to download or update an app, and the app continuing to function are different things. A listing alone does not guarantee Quest 1 compatibility or future service access.

Does the Quest 1 still work?
Yes, as legacy hardware, but there is no guarantee that every app or service will keep working. Installed apps may continue to run, and older games may remain playable offline or online if their software, account systems and servers still function. The headset was not automatically bricked by the submission cutoff.
Compatibility can still end without a headset-wide shutdown. An app update may require newer hardware or operating-system capabilities, or a developer may stop supporting Quest 1. Online services can also change authentication, multiplayer servers, APIs or account requirements independently of a local app update. A purchased digital game is not a promise of indefinite compatibility with those systems.

Meta had already begun phasing out support for some of its own Quest 1 social features, including Parties and Meta Horizon Home, according to the contemporary Road to VR report. That is a first-party service decision, not evidence that all third-party games were disabled.
What existing owners should check before updating or resetting
If a particular game matters to you, check its developer’s current support information before relying on it. For example, FitXR has a separate support explanation for Quest 1 users, illustrating that outcomes can vary by developer: FitXR’s Quest 1 support page.

- Confirm that the app explicitly supports Quest 1, rather than assuming compatibility from a store listing or a newer Quest label.
- For multiplayer, subscriptions and social apps, check whether the developer still operates the required servers and account services.
- Do not casually factory-reset a working headset if you depend on installed apps. Setup and redownloads may require current account flows, and you should first confirm that the software you want is still obtainable and compatible.
- Keep expectations for system fixes modest: the reported window for critical bug fixes and security patches ended in August 2024.
Is it worth keeping or buying a Quest 1?
Keeping one you already own
Keeping the headset can make sense if you mainly use installed single-player games, older apps you have confirmed still work, or offline experiences. It may also remain useful as a PC VR display if your PC, connection method and software remain compatible. PC VR use does not restore standalone Quest Store support, and it does not guarantee that every PC VR title will run well on the older headset.
Buying one used
A used Quest 1 is a poor choice if you want new standalone releases, current multiplayer or social VR, ongoing fitness subscriptions, frequent system improvements, or a long support horizon. Treat it as a low-cost legacy device only if the specific apps you want are confirmed to work and you accept the possibility that services or compatibility may end.

Inspect the headset and controllers, test tracking and controls, and check battery condition, lenses, facial interface and included charging equipment. Confirm the device can be set up with your account and is not still tied to another account. A low purchase price does not solve software availability or the absence of ongoing manufacturer support.
Choosing a newer headset
For a buyer who wants current Quest software, newer hardware is the more dependable route. Quest 2 may cost less used, but it is itself an older generation; do not treat it as a guarantee of indefinite support. Quest 3S is a current-generation entry-level option, while Quest 3 is the higher-end choice for users who want more performance headroom and mixed-reality capability. Separate issue: Horizon Worlds ended on Quest in 2026
Meta’s Horizon Worlds change is separate from the Quest 1 app-submission policy. Meta said Horizon Worlds and Events would leave the Quest Store by March 31, 2026, and that Horizon Worlds VR access would end after June 15, 2026, with the app and remaining VR worlds removed from Quest. Meta also said standalone third-party VR apps on Quest were not affected by that transition; Horizon Worlds would continue through the Meta Horizon mobile app. See Meta’s announcement.
