If it shows signs of power but the display stays black, treat that as a separate problem: remove accessories, try Meta’s hard reboot, then use the boot menu if it appears. A black screen does not by itself prove the battery is empty.
First, tell whether the headset has power
Check the power LED and listen or look for any sign that the headset is starting. If there appears to be no power, Meta Quest Support recommends charging the headset for two hours. That is a troubleshooting interval, not a guarantee that charging will fix the problem. Meta’s support guidance does not specify a required charger wattage or a replacement cable model.
Use a compatible USB-C charger and cable, and check that the connections are secure. If the headset still appears inert after the two-hour charge, follow Meta’s current headset charging guidance or contact Meta support. Do not infer that the battery or port has failed based only on a charge icon or the lack of a display.
If the headset has power but the display is black
Disconnect accessories
Remove unsupported third-party accessories that could interfere with startup, especially an external battery pack or anything connected to the headset’s USB-C port. Then try starting the headset again. Meta support recommends this check for a powered headset with no display. Meta Quest Support and a Meta support reply about Quest 2 video problems describe the accessory-removal and recovery steps.

Hard reboot the Quest 2
Meta support’s instruction is to hold the power button and volume-down button together for 30 seconds, until you hear the boot-up sound. If you do not hear it, keep holding both buttons until the boot screen appears. Meta Quest Support attributes the 30-second instruction to a Meta Community Manager account.
Choose Boot Device from the boot menu
If the boot screen appears, use the volume buttons to highlight “Boot Device,” then press power. Highlight “Yes” and press power again. You need a visible boot menu to follow these selections; if the menu does not appear or the buttons do not respond, stop repeating the same sequence and contact Meta support.

When to consider a factory reset
Factory reset is a later troubleshooting option, after charging, removing accessories, and attempting a restart or boot-menu recovery. Consider its data consequences before proceeding. The cited Meta support thread lists the reset as a step but does not establish exactly what local data can be recovered afterward, and a reset is not a guaranteed hardware repair. Follow Meta’s current reset instructions and contact support if you are unsure.
Use Meta’s software update utility if the headset can boot
If the Quest 2 can start and you suspect a software problem, Meta’s software update utility lists Quest 2 and says the update will not affect saved app data or settings. The utility describes software issues such as slow performance or unresponsive apps. Its preparation page asks for 2 GB of free computer storage and the included USB-C cable. When troubleshooting has not worked
If the headset remains without power after Meta’s suggested charge interval, or if it shows signs of power but never displays a boot menu, contact Meta support. The guidance cited here does not establish how common these faults are or provide a success rate for any fix. Do not open the headset or attempt internal battery or board repairs; the available Meta steps are charging, accessory removal, reboot and recovery, reset, and support escalation.
