Based on public sources, not firsthand play: Once Human is a free-to-play open-world survival game that combines shooting with crafting, exploration and base building in a post-apocalyptic setting. Its mix of PvE, PvP, co-op and single-player tags makes it broader—and less neatly defined—than “MMO” alone suggests. Whether that unusual blend is a good fit depends on which parts of the survival formula you want most.
What kind of game is Once Human?
Steam describes Once Human as a “Strange Worlds Survival Game,” set in a post-apocalyptic future. Its listing combines open-world survival and shooter elements with crafting, exploration and base building. The game is free to play and marked as containing in-app purchases. Steam’s listing also uses tags for PvE, PvP, online co-op and single-player.

Those tags indicate a range of activities, not a single tightly defined multiplayer format. They don’t, by themselves, establish how well combat, cooperation or building work in practice. The game’s premise is unusual enough to stand out, but the appeal will hinge on whether you enjoy survival-sandbox systems as much as shooter combat.
What the available review evidence says about combat
PC Gamer’s 2024 review described shooting and boss encounters in its play period. The reviewer reported that highly upgraded weapons made ordinary enemies easy to defeat, while bosses could feel like damage sponges. That is useful critical context, but it is one review’s assessment of the game at that time—not a verified description of its October 2026 state. Read PC Gamer’s 2024 review.

- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dyno herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
There is not enough evidence here to make a current, firsthand judgment about combat feel or balance. Treat the official listing as a guide to the game’s ingredients, and the older review as a dated perspective on how some of those ingredients played together.
Free-to-play costs and purchases
Steam lists Once Human as free to play and notes in-app purchases. In its 2024 review, PC Gamer said the $10 and $24 battle passes it examined were cosmetic and did not affect player power or progression. Those amounts and that assessment apply to the passes reviewed then; they should not be read as a current price list or confirmation of what the store offers now.

Platforms and ongoing content
NetEase announced that Once Human would launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on August 25, 2026. The publisher said six scenarios and a PvP spin-off would be available to console players at launch; “six” is NetEase’s reported launch count, not an independent count of the current catalog. See NetEase’s console-launch announcement.
Official activity continued into 2026: an August post discussed an ocean world, and the Steam listing showed a patch note dated September 17, 2026. These dated signals indicate ongoing updates, but they are not a complete account of the game’s content or update history. Once Human’s official news index is the place to check for further announcements.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
Once Human is most promising for players who want an open-world survival game where shooting shares space with crafting and base building. Before committing time, consider which of these trade-offs matters to you:
- Crafting and building alongside combat: The store listing presents these as core parts of the game, not just a shooter with a survival setting.
- PvE, co-op or PvP: Steam lists all three, as well as single-player. Check the current game and scenario details if you have a strong preference for one way to play.
- Free-to-play purchases: The game has in-app purchases. The dated PC Gamer assessment of cosmetic battle passes does not establish the current contents or terms of the store.
- Ongoing scenarios: Official announcements point to continuing content, which may suit players interested in an evolving open-world game. The announcements cited here do not establish a complete content schedule.
