To set up a Meta Quest headset, charge the headset, install the Meta Horizon app on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, sign in to a Meta account, connect the Quest to Wi‐Fi, pair it with the app, install updates, adjust the fit, and create a safe play boundary. The basic path is straightforward, but firmware downloads, account verification, and pairing problems can make it take longer than a few minutes.
This guide focuses on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, with notes for Quest 2. The wording of menus may differ by model and Horizon OS version. Older instructions may call the companion app “Meta Quest” or “Oculus”; the current app name is Meta Horizon.

Which Meta Quest models does this guide cover?
The main instructions apply to Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S. Quest 2 follows broadly the same process, but its controllers, lens adjustment, and some screens differ. Do not assume that a Quest 3 or 3S instruction applies exactly to Quest Pro or older Oculus models. If your device shows different labels, follow the on-screen prompts or use model-specific help from the Meta Help Center.

Quest 3 and Quest 3S also differ optically. Quest 3 uses a different lens system from Quest 3S, so lens-spacing adjustments are not identical. Quest 2 likewise has its own lens-position system. Avoid following an IPD or lens-setting instruction intended for another model.

Before you turn on the headset
1. Charge the headset
Connect the headset to the supplied or a compatible USB-C charger and confirm that a charging indicator or battery icon appears. Starting with a nearly empty battery is a common way to interrupt setup, especially when a firmware update follows pairing. Leave the headset connected to power while updates install.
The exact charging time depends on the model, charger, battery condition, and software activity, so do not rely on a universal “full charge in” estimate.
2. Prepare the controllers
Install the included batteries. If the controllers have plastic shipping or battery-isolator tabs, remove them first. A headset can turn on normally while one or both controllers remain unpowered because a tab is still in place.
3. Prepare your phone or tablet
Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for Meta Horizon. Confirm that the publisher is Meta, install the official app, and update it before pairing. Avoid random APK files or unofficial apps using older “Oculus setup” branding.
A computer is not normally required for ordinary consumer setup. A compatible phone or tablet and Wi‐Fi are the usual starting requirements. Exact mobile operating-system compatibility can change, so check the current store listing if the app cannot be installed.
4. Find your Wi‐Fi password and clear a play area
Have the network password ready. Also clear furniture, cables, pets, fragile objects, and other people from the area where you will use the headset. A well-lit room generally makes tracking and boundary setup easier.
Step 1: Install Meta Horizon and sign in
- Open the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for Meta Horizon.
- Check that Meta is listed as the publisher.
- Install and update the app.
- Choose Log in if you already have a Meta account, or choose the account-creation option.
- Complete email verification or any requested authentication.
- Select the correct age or account category and create a secure password.
- Enable two-factor authentication where available.
The account associates the headset with its owner and provides access to account features and the Horizon Store. Age, region, supervised-account rules, and available services can differ, so use the correct account category rather than placing a child’s headset under an adult identity to bypass restrictions.

Do not assume that a Facebook account is mandatory. Older Oculus-era instructions may describe requirements that no longer match the current setup flow.
Step 2: Turn on and configure the Quest headset
Press and hold the headset’s power button until it starts. The first-run flow normally asks for a language, region or location, Wi‐Fi details, account or pairing information, controller setup, safety settings, and software updates. Menu wording can vary by headset model and Horizon OS version.
Select your language, choose the appropriate region, and connect to your home Wi‐Fi network:
- Select the network name.
- Enter the password with the on-screen keyboard.
- Wait for the connection to complete.
- Keep the headset plugged in while it checks for updates.
Captive-portal networks at hotels, airports, dorms, and some guest networks may not work smoothly. School and enterprise networks can also block device-to-device communication. A hidden SSID may require manual entry. If a network appears connected but account verification fails, incorrect date and time or a restricted network may be involved.
Step 3: Pair the headset with Meta Horizon
Pairing should be managed inside Meta Horizon, not through the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth settings.
- Open Meta Horizon and sign in with the account you intend to use on the headset.
- Open the device or setup section.
- Select the correct Quest model.
- Keep the phone and headset close together.
- Follow the discovery prompts.
- If requested, enter the pairing code shown inside the headset.
- Wait for the app to confirm the connection before closing it.
The app may discover the headset automatically, or it may ask for a code displayed in the headset. The phone and headset should normally use the same Wi‐Fi network for reliable discovery and device communication. Bluetooth must also be enabled on the phone.
Depending on the phone and operating-system version, Meta Horizon may request permissions such as Nearby devices and location access. Permission names differ between Android and iOS. Meta community support guidance identifies these permissions as a possible cause of failed discovery, so allow the requested access during setup or check it in the phone’s app settings if pairing fails.

Step 4: Let updates finish
The headset may download firmware updates immediately after connecting. Keep it charged and connected to Wi‐Fi, and do not repeatedly power it off during installation. Setup time varies substantially with update size, network speed, and account verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf an update looks frozen, wait before forcing a reset. A restart is more reasonable only when the headset has clearly stopped responding. Do not interrupt an installation simply because the screen has not changed for a short period.
Step 5: Set up the controllers and hand tracking
Follow the on-screen instructions to activate and pair each controller. Confirm that the left controller is assigned to the left hand and the right controller to the right hand. Attach the wrist straps before playing.
If a controller is missing:
- Remove and reinsert its battery.
- Confirm that any isolator tab has been removed.
- Try a fresh battery.
- Restart the headset.
- Repeat the in-headset controller-pairing flow.
Quest headsets can support hand tracking, but hand tracking is not a complete replacement for controllers. Some games and setup screens work best with physical controllers. If setup permits, hand tracking can be a temporary way to navigate while troubleshooting.
Step 6: Adjust fit, lenses, and clarity
- Loosen the strap before putting on the headset.
- Position the facial interface comfortably around your eyes and nose.
- Tighten the strap until the headset is secure without excessive pressure.
- Adjust the model’s lens spacing or IPD control until text looks clearest.
- Move the headset slightly up, down, left, or right to find the clearest view.
Blurry text is not automatically a software problem. Repositioning the headset and adjusting the strap can matter as much as lens spacing. Clean the lenses only with a suitable microfiber cloth. Check for protective film if the headset is new.
If you wear glasses, do not let the frames scrape the headset lenses. Use a compatible glasses spacer or prescription inserts designed for your exact Quest model. Prescription inserts are model-specific, not universal.
New users should take regular breaks, particularly during the first sessions. Comfort depends on the headset, the user’s eye spacing and facial shape, and the type of movement in the app.

- 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.
Step 7: Create the Guardian boundary
The Guardian is a visual warning system, not physical protection. It does not stop collisions, falls, or another person from entering the play area.
Stationary boundary
Choose a stationary boundary for seated or mostly stationary use. This is suitable for experiences where you will not walk around much.
Room-scale boundary
Choose room-scale when you need space to move. The headset will guide you through identifying the floor and drawing a boundary around the usable area.
- Move furniture, pets, cables, and fragile objects away from the play space.
- Make sure the room is adequately lit.
- Confirm that the floor level is correct.
- Draw the boundary several feet away from walls and obstacles.
- Look around the entire area before accepting it.
- Recreate the boundary whenever you move to another room or the saved boundary no longer matches reality.
Mirrors, reflective surfaces, poor lighting, camera obstruction, and a boundary drawn too close to obstacles can contribute to tracking or Guardian problems.
Step 8: Finish safety, comfort, privacy, and purchase settings
Before launching a demanding game, review:
- Volume: Start at a comfortable level and protect your hearing.
- Break reminders: Keep reminders enabled, especially for new users.
- Movement: Begin with teleport movement, snap turning, or other comfort options instead of immediately choosing smooth locomotion.
- Wrist straps: Keep them attached during play.
- Privacy: Review social, profile, and communication settings.
- Casting: Check who can cast or view the headset screen.
- Purchase security: Set a purchase PIN where available.
- Parental controls: Use parent-managed controls where available for a child or teen account.
Do not disable safety features merely to remove interruptions. Adjust them to suit the room and the user, but keep a boundary and safe play habits in place.
Step 9: Install your first app
- Open the Horizon Store on the headset or in the Meta Horizon app.
- Search for an app or game.
- Check whether it is free or paid.
- Select Install or complete the purchase.
- Wait for the download to finish.
- Launch it from the library.
For a first experience, choose a short tutorial or comfort-oriented app rather than an intense rollercoaster, flight, or smooth-locomotion game. Stop if you feel dizzy, nauseated, or unwell. Introductory experiences and the Meta Store are also suggested in the CDC-reproduced Meta Quest setup material.

Work through these checks in order:
- Check the account: Make sure Meta Horizon and the headset use the same intended Meta account.
- Check the model: Select the correct Quest model in the app.
- Check Wi‐Fi: Put the phone and headset on the same network.
- Check permissions: Enable Bluetooth, Nearby devices, and any requested location permission in the phone settings.
- Update the app: Install the latest Meta Horizon update available for your phone.
- Restart: Restart the phone and headset, then try again.
- Try another network: Use a different Wi‐Fi network or phone hotspot as a diagnostic test.
- Reinstall carefully: Reinstall Meta Horizon only after confirming that you know your login details.
- Contact support: Use Meta Support if the device remains associated with the wrong account or cannot be provisioned.
- Factory reset last: A reset erases local headset data and requires setup again.
Do not pair the Quest from the phone’s normal Bluetooth menu first. The Meta Horizon app should manage pairing. Alternate networks, permission changes, app reinstalls, and support escalation are commonly suggested remedies, but none is guaranteed to solve every pairing problem.

Other common setup problems
The display is blurry
- Reposition the headset on your face.
- Adjust strap tension and the facial interface.
- Clean the lenses with a microfiber cloth.
- Adjust lens spacing or IPD for your model.
- Check for protective film.
- Check whether glasses or inserts are touching or interfering with the headset.
- Compare the view through each eye.
- Contact support if one eye remains persistently distorted or the display appears damaged.
Tracking or the Guardian is inaccurate
Improve lighting, clear reflective surfaces where possible, move away from mirrors, and recreate the boundary. Restart the headset if tracking remains abnormal. Also check for available software updates.
A controller is not working
Remove and reinsert the battery, replace it if necessary, confirm that the battery tab is gone, restart the headset, and repeat controller pairing. Use hand tracking temporarily if the setup allows it. Contact support if one controller remains unrecognized.
Wi‐Fi or an update fails
- Re-enter the Wi‐Fi password.
- Move closer to the router.
- Restart the router, phone, and headset.
- Try another network or hotspot.
- Temporarily disable network filtering if you control the network.
- Leave the headset charging while retrying.
- Contact Meta Support before performing a factory reset.
A hotspot can help diagnose a network problem, but it may be unsuitable for large game downloads or firmware updates because of data caps and instability. No single Wi‐Fi band is universally required; use a stable network and test another band or network if setup stalls.

A previously owned headset may still be associated with another person’s Meta account. The previous owner should remove it from their account where possible. If the device remains associated or its setup is corrupted, a factory reset may be necessary, but this erases local data and starts the setup process again.
Before relying on a used headset, check that it includes the controllers, charger, facial interface, and battery covers. Do not assume it has current firmware, an intact warranty, or working batteries.
Setting up a child or teen’s headset
Use the correct age category and follow the current parent-managed account flow for your country. Review purchases, social features, casting, privacy, and communication settings before handing over the headset. Exact age thresholds and available controls can vary by region and may change, so avoid treating an older guide’s age limits as universal.
