This was a historical incident, not a newly spreading outage in 2026. If your headset is still affected, the most reliable route is Meta’s device-claim and support process—not repeated factory resets. Check your headset’s replacement eligibility through Meta before buying another device.

What happened to some Meta Quest headsets?
During the late-December 2024 rollout of Horizon OS v72, some Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S units failed during or after installation. Reported symptoms included:
- A black screen or failure to start Horizon OS.
- The warning
Your device is corrupt. It can’t be trusted.
- No useful response to normal button presses, charging, or recovery attempts.
Not every headset that installed v72 was affected, and the available evidence does not establish a reliable total or percentage of failures. Forum and Reddit reports show that owners encountered the problem, but they cannot be used to measure how widespread it was.

The incident did not establish that Quest Pro or every other Meta product was affected. The consistently identified models were Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S.
Was v72 itself the cause?
Early reports understandably described this as a bad v72 update because the failures appeared during the v72 rollout. Meta later gave a more specific explanation: a rare Android AOSP/ext4 filesystem read/write race condition could corrupt files, while a security patch prevented the operating system from performing its usual rollback.
In plain English, the problem surfaced while v72 was being distributed, but Meta later attributed the underlying failure to the interaction between an Android filesystem bug and the rollback-blocking security change. That is more precise than saying v72 alone permanently damaged every affected headset. Meta said the underlying bug was fixed and that a corrected v72 rollout was issued in January 2025. - It is a Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S.
- The failure began during or shortly after the v72 update period in late December 2024 or early January 2025.
- The headset shows a black screen or the corruption warning.
- It cannot boot normally into Horizon OS.
A black screen by itself does not prove that v72 caused the problem. A depleted battery, damaged cable, display fault, or unrelated software failure can produce similar symptoms.
Try these recovery steps once
1. Check charging basics
Use a known-good compatible charger and cable, and allow the headset to charge. This can rule out a flat battery, but charging will not repair corrupted system files.
2. Perform the reported long-power-button restart
Hold the headset’s power button for approximately 45 seconds, then release it and try a normal restart. This was reported as a first-line troubleshooting step during the incident, but it is not a guaranteed unbricking procedure.
3. Treat manual v71 recovery as a limited option
Contemporary guidance also discussed manually installing or flashing the earlier v71 build using Meta’s manual update tool and a smartphone. That option was not a universal cure, and it should not be confused with downloading firmware from an unofficial website. A fully unresponsive headset may not accept the process at all.

Do not use random firmware files or unofficial mirrors. If the headset remains dead or repeatedly shows the corruption warning, stop experimenting and move to Meta’s claim process.
How to claim support or a replacement from Meta
- Open Meta’s product-selection page.
- Select Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S.
- Sign in with the Meta account associated with the headset.
- Let Meta check whether the device is affected and eligible.
- Follow the support, return, and replacement instructions shown for your device.
Meta’s claim flow is device-specific. Have the headset’s model, serial number, Meta account details, purchase information, and any error photos or videos available. If you received the headset as a gift, the recipient’s associated Meta account may be needed, while the purchaser’s receipt can still be useful.
The product page may open in a regional locale. Use the appropriate country version where available and verify return shipping, replacement inventory, eligibility, and other terms before sending anything.

What if the headset is out of warranty?
During the incident, reports indicated that Meta provided replacement or store-credit remedies in some cases, including refurbished units for some out-of-warranty owners. That does not establish a permanent or universal entitlement.
Eligibility can depend on the serial number, model, region, purchase history, and Meta’s current policy. Submit the device through the claim flow before paying for a replacement. Save support case numbers and written responses, and do not assume either that an out-of-warranty device will automatically be rejected or that every such device will receive a free replacement.

A factory reset is not the main answer to this incident. It can erase locally stored settings and data, and it may not repair corrupted system files or a headset that cannot reach recovery.

A reset may also make troubleshooting harder without addressing the underlying failure.

Is it safe to update a Quest headset now?
There is no reason to avoid all Quest updates because of this historical incident. Meta later issued a corrected v72 rollout and said the underlying filesystem problem was fixed. Quest software continued receiving later releases.
If your headset works normally, use Meta’s current official update mechanism and check the current Quest announcements and release information. Do not enroll in the Public Test Channel as a recovery method for a bricked headset; testing builds are not a substitute for the stable support process.
Do not factory-reset a functioning headset merely because it once missed an update. Keep it charged during official updates, and back up or sync important data where the relevant game or service supports it.

- Do not assume every Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S was bricked.
- Do not assume every black screen is related to v72.
- Do not repeatedly factory-reset a completely unresponsive headset.
- Do not install firmware from unofficial sources.
- Do not treat forum activity as a reliable incident count.
- Do not buy a replacement before checking Meta’s incident-specific eligibility process.
The practical answer
If your Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest 3S failed during the late-2024 v72 rollout, try the approximately 45-second power-button restart once, document the error, and use Meta’s official claim page if the headset remains unusable. Manual v71 recovery was reported as a possible option, not a guaranteed fix.
If your headset works, keep using Meta’s official update path. The v72 incident was resolved as a historical software-update problem; it is not evidence that Quest updates are still broadly turning working headsets into paperweights in 2026.
