“ This application failed to start because MetaFlanger.dll was not found.”
If metaflanger.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start Waves MetaFlanger inside a DAW or audio host. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, game dependency or driver.

The program that normally needs it is not Windows itself. A DAW, plugin host or older Waves installation may request the file while loading a project or scanning effects. The exact application cannot be identified from the filename alone.
Waves currently distributes MetaFlanger across multiple product generations, from V9 through V17. That matters because a project saved with an older Waves installation may expect a different plugin format, WaveShell or installation path than a current setup provides.
You should not place the file in either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those are Windows system directories, not normal Waves plugin locations. Current Waves installations use versioned plugin folders, such as:
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V17
They also use host-facing WaveShell files, including a VST3 WaveShell under:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3
The exact files visible on your system depend on the Waves generation and plugin format.
Fix 1: Reinstall MetaFlanger through Waves Central
This is the safest and most likely solution when the error names MetaFlanger while a DAW or project opens.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. Install or update Waves Central
Use the official Waves Central installer from the Waves Downloads page. Current Waves Central supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. Older Windows versions may require a legacy Waves installer instead.
After installation:
- Open the Start menu.
- Select Waves Central.
- Sign in with the Waves account that owns or activated MetaFlanger.
- Open Install Products.
- Select My Products to see products associated with your account.
- If MetaFlanger is not shown, check All Products.
- Select MetaFlanger.
- Choose the Waves version compatible with your DAW and existing projects.
- Click Install.
- Wait for the installation to finish before opening the DAW.
Waves Central can install current Waves generations online. V9 and V10 products require the appropriate legacy installation procedure from Waves Downloads.
Do not install the newest available generation automatically if the affected project was created with an older Waves version. The project may depend on an older VST2 WaveShell or a license that does not support the current generation.
2. Check the license
In Waves Central:
- Open Licenses.
- Locate MetaFlanger or the relevant Waves license bundle.
- Confirm that the license is available.
- Activate it on the correct computer or supported device.
- Return to Install Products.
- Install the version allowed by that license.
A plugin can be physically present but still unavailable, disabled or placed in Demo mode when the license and installed version do not match.

3. Restart the DAW
Close the DAW completely after installation. If it remains running in the background, close it through Task Manager:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select the Processes tab.
- Find the DAW or plugin scanner.
- Select it and click End task only if it did not close normally.
- Start the DAW again.
Open the plugin browser and search for MetaFlanger. If it appears and loads without the missing-file message, the repair worked.
Fix 2: Rescan the correct plugin locations
A successful Waves installation can still appear broken if the DAW is scanning the wrong folder or has an outdated plugin cache.
Check the standard Waves locations
Look for the versioned Waves plugin folder in File Explorer. Common locations include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteC:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V17
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V16
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V15
C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3
Do not assume that every Waves product will expose a file literally called metaflanger.dll. Newer installations may use a WaveShell and bundled plugin components instead.
Rescan from the DAW
Every host uses different menus, but the process is generally:
- Open the DAW’s plugin or audio settings.
- Confirm that its VST3 path includes the standard Common Files VST3 directory.
- Add the correct Waves VST or legacy plugin path only if the DAW requires it.
- Enable plugin rescanning or full rescan.
- Clear the plugin cache if the DAW provides that option.
- Scan again.
- Search for MetaFlanger, not just
metaflanger.dll.
For FL Studio, open Options > Manage plugins, verify the VST3 paths, enable rescanning, and select Find installed plugins.
If the DAW reports that the plugin exists but cannot load, note the complete message. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of the plugin is missing, not that the named file itself is absent. Reinstalling the complete Waves product is safer than downloading individual dependencies.

Fix 3: Handle an old VST2 project correctly
Older projects may refer to a VST2 WaveShell or a direct DLL-style plugin entry. Waves VST2 support ends with V14; V15 and later do not support VST2.
This creates a common upgrade pattern:
- The project was saved with an older Waves generation.
- The old VST2 component was removed.
- A newer VST3 installation is present.
- The DAW still tries to open the original VST2 instance.
The fix is not to rename a VST3 file to .dll. Instead:
- Identify the Waves version used when the project was saved.
- Check whether your Waves license supports that version.
- Install the matching legacy version through Waves Central or the appropriate Waves legacy installer.
- Rescan the old VST2 path.
- Open the project.
- Replace the old instance with the VST3 MetaFlanger version if the project loads correctly.
- Save a new copy of the project.
If the old project opens only after the legacy installation, keep that version available until all projects have been converted. Multiple Waves generations may coexist, but each project can still point to an obsolete WaveShell or plugin path.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit host cannot load a 64-bit plugin, and a 64-bit host cannot load a 32-bit plugin in the normal way. This can produce messages such as:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- The specified module could not be found.
- The plugin could not be loaded.
- The program is not designed to run on Windows.
- A required component is missing.
Check the DAW’s architecture in its About window or documentation. Then confirm that the installed Waves generation supports that host and Windows version.
Do not solve an architecture mismatch by copying files between System32, SysWOW64, plugin folders and random application directories. That can create version collisions without making the plugin compatible.
If the DAW offers a bridge for older plugins, use its documented bridge only when necessary. A native compatible Waves installation is preferable.
Fix 5: Review antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a plugin after an update or scan.
To check Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an item involving Waves, MetaFlanger or the plugin installation folder.
- Review the detected path and publisher information.
Restore a quarantined file only when you trust its provenance and it is clearly part of the legitimate Waves installation. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again.
A safer route is usually:
- Note the quarantined path.
- Remove the incomplete Waves installation if necessary.
- Reinstall MetaFlanger from Waves Central.
- Allow the security product to scan the official installer.
- Contact Waves Support if a legitimate installation is repeatedly quarantined.
Do not add broad exclusions for your entire Windows or Downloads directory.
Fix 6: Repair a damaged Waves installation
If Waves Central reports an installation failure:
- Confirm that the system drive has free space.
- Temporarily disconnect from a VPN or restrictive network.
- Run Waves Central with administrator rights by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Sign in again.
- Retry the MetaFlanger installation.
- Reboot Windows.
- Run the DAW’s plugin scan again.
If an old Waves version is involved, use the matching legacy installer rather than forcing a current package into an older project.
If the installer continues to fail, record the exact error, Windows version, DAW version, Waves version and installation path. Those details are more useful to Waves Support than the filename alone.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when other symptoms point to Windows
metaflanger.dll is a third-party plugin, so Windows repair commands normally will not restore it. Use them when several unrelated Windows files are damaged, applications fail broadly, or system updates are also malfunctioning.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft documents that these commands repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing Waves plugin.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the DAW again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, focus on Waves Central, the license, the plugin path and compatibility instead.
When manually comparing repair results, hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed becomes time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repairs are handled by the full version, while reinstalling MetaFlanger from Waves remains the definitive fix for this specific plugin.

Windows Features are not the solution
Do not enable random Windows Features to restore MetaFlanger. You can review them through:
- Open Start.
- Type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result.
- Review the installed features.
There is no Windows Feature that installs Waves MetaFlanger. Microsoft runtimes should be installed only when the complete error specifically names a missing Microsoft runtime DLL. The filename metaflanger.dll alone does not establish that Visual C++ or DirectX is required.
Fix 8: Check audio drivers only if the timing points to a driver change
An audio driver does not normally provide metaflanger.dll, but a DAW update, audio-interface change or driver installation can expose plugin-scan problems.
Check Device Manager:
- Press Win+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Double-click the audio interface or sound device.
- Check the General tab for an error status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or a trusted Windows update.
- Restart Windows and test the DAW.
Do not remove a working audio driver merely because MetaFlanger is missing. The plugin still needs to be restored through Waves Central.
When a DAW and several hardware devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the right package can mean checking many manufacturers and revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; installation is performed by the full version, and it does not replace the need to reinstall MetaFlanger from Waves.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, software update or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore process.
- Let Windows restart.
System Restore can reverse system and software changes, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling MetaFlanger. After the restore, open Waves Central and verify the product, license and plugin paths.
Why downloading metaflanger.dll is a bad fix
Avoid isolated DLL download sites pages and file-copy instructions. They can provide:

- A file that does not match its dependencies.
- A modified or malicious binary.
- A direct DLL when the DAW actually needs a WaveShell.
- A file that does not match the license or plugin format.
Even a file with the right name may not repair the installation. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64 or the DAW directory can also create path conflicts and hide the real problem.
Use Waves Central or the appropriate official Waves legacy installer instead. The correct repair includes the plugin components, WaveShell files, license handling and format expected by the DAW.
Do not run:
regsvr32 metaflanger.dll
as a routine repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Audio effect plugins and Waves WaveShell components are normally discovered by the host, not registered as COM servers. A registration error does not prove that the Waves installation is fixed.

Prevention after MetaFlanger works
Once MetaFlanger loads:
- Save the project under a new name.
- Note the Waves generation and plugin format.
- Keep the DAW’s VST3 path unchanged.
- Avoid deleting older Waves versions while legacy projects still need them.
- Keep Waves licenses activated on the intended device.
- Review antivirus quarantine after major plugin updates.
- Back up project files and record the plugin versions they use.
- Rescan the DAW after installing or updating Waves products.
If the problem returns, collect the exact application name, Windows version, DAW version, Waves version, plugin format, full error text, installation path and any antivirus quarantine record before contacting Waves Support.

Is metaflanger.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to Waves MetaFlanger and is normally used by a DAW or audio plugin host.
Does MetaFlanger belong in System32?
No. Do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Why do I see a DLL error when my newer Waves installation uses WaveShell?
Older projects or VST2 references may identify a direct DLL-style component. Current Waves installations may expose MetaFlanger through a versioned plugin folder, WaveShell and VST3 bundle components instead.
Can I fix the error by renaming a VST3 file to .dll?
No. File extensions do not convert plugin formats, dependencies or architecture.
Will SFC restore MetaFlanger?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while MetaFlanger is a third-party Waves plugin.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency, WaveShell, plugin path or architecture component may be missing. Reinstall the complete compatible Waves product rather than searching for individual dependencies.
Do I need Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not based on this filename alone. Install or repair a Microsoft runtime only when the complete error specifically identifies that runtime as missing.
What if MetaFlanger is installed but the DAW still cannot find it?
Verify the DAW’s VST3 or legacy VST scan path, clear its plugin cache if available, and perform a full rescan. Also check the Waves license and host architecture.
What is the correct first step?
Install or update Waves Central, sign in, open Install Products, select MetaFlanger under My Products or All Products, install the compatible version, then restart and rescan the DAW.
